Dog Collectibles

Whether as a hobby or an investment, collecting dog art is a fascinating pasttime. Dogs have been a part of human society for so long that we sometimes don't realise how we have shaped their destiny and indeed, how they have shaped ours.

Collecting dog art is as much a  historical journey into the social acceptance of our four legged friends and their place at our side. The earliest pictures of dogs depict them accompanying hunters and for a very long time it was only in this capacity that their likenesses were rendered at all. With the exception of course, of Anubis and Cerebus ancient dog gods and protectors of the dead.

Cecil Aldin - Sporting Artist and Dog Lover

Cecil Aldin, born in Slough in 1870, was famed in his own time for his foxhunting and sporting dog illustrations. Royal Doulton have memorialised his work in their 'Dogs of Character' series as well as in 'Aldin Dogs' a series of decorative plates.

Though some of his work is becoming hard to find, like a series of 16 prints he made featuring his Irish Wolfhound, Mickey, many other items can be found and make an excellent start to any dog art collection.
