Make your own dog treats!

What better way to show your dog how much you love him than with fresh baked cookies? I started making my own treats years ago when I had a German Shepherd that was allergic to wheat and dairy. These days, the availibility of books and recipes for making dog treats has grown. We now see specialty bakeries where you can spend a lot of dough on treats such as cakes, cookies, cupcakes, pupcicles and brownies. But why spend that much money when you can do it at home? It's fun (get your kids involved), makes your home smell good and nothing says love better than homemade goodies.

Stumble It!

You Control the Ingredients

Whether you dog has specific food allergies, health conditions, or you are just worried about the quality of the ingredients in commercial treats, you have the ability to use human grade food items to make your own treats. With recent issues of Chinese Rice Gluten being tainted and many treats and even food being recalled, more and more owners have chosen to make their own treats.

Here's one of my all time favorites. I had to keep a dear friend from eating these cookies himself, they smelled so good!

Pumpkin Pie Biscuits

1 1/2 cups of Whole Wheat Flour
2 cups of all-purpose flour (plus a little extra for rolling)
1/2 cup rolled oats
1 teaspoon of cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg
1/2 cup of reduced sodium chicken broth
3/4 cup of canned pumpkin (NOT pumpkin pie mix)
1 tablespoon oil
1 tablespoon maple syrup or pancake syrup
1 egg
Non-Stick Foil

Preheat oven to 350.
Mix the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl.
Blend the broth, pumpkin, oil, syrup and egg in a blender or food processor.
Add the blended mixture to the dry ingredients and mix together with a spoon.
Use your hand to mix well and form a dough.
Roll out onto a floured surface while sprinkling the surface and dough with flour to prevent sticking to the rolling pin and surface.
Roll out to 1/2 inch thickness.
Use cookie cutters to cut out the biscuits and place on a baking sheet with non-stick foil.
Bake for 30 to 40 minutes or until brown.
Store biscuits in the refrigerator in an air-tight container.

Cooking for the dog?

Many people view their pets as family members. We care as much, if not more, for their well being as we do ourselves. With recent scares about the quality of dog and cat food, people have become more aware of ingredients being used in pet food.
