Dog Debarking - Debark a Dog - Dog Debarking Surgery
Dog debarking. So your dog's barking is driving you and your neighbors crazy—annoyance, lost sleep and more. You may have heard about having a dog debarked as a way to stop a dog from barking. Read on to learn about what it is to debark a dog and its pros and cons.
Debarking, or a ventricular cordectomy, as a way to stop dog barking problems is an elective minor surgical procedure in which the veterinarian severs or removes the vocal cords. The pro is that debarking a dog is fairly immediate way to stop dog barking problems. The dog can't make much noise with sliced vocal cords. So there's not much of a waiting period for debarking to take effect to stop dog barking.
The cons of dog debarking are that it's indiscriminate in that it removes all barking including the kind that protects us. You would wish your dog could still bark if there's a prowler in your back yard at night or smoke coming from an electrical outlet.
Also, debarking surgery is often a temporary solution to dog barking problems or puppy barking problems due to scar formation. And a debarking procedure must be repeated--sometimes a number of times. The dog isn't totally silent after you debark your dog, but the noise he makes--sort of like a loud, wheezy cough--is really pitiful. And worst of all, dog debarking does nothing to relieve that destructive process and stress that a barking dog falls victim to with the ulcers and immune system compromise.
So, how do you stop a barking dog without resorting to debarking your dog? As I describe in my dog behavior training ebook, there are many causes of excessive barking--whether your dog's barking is occurring while you are home or while you are gone. When you determine why your dog is barking excessively, you are on the way to the solution. Then apply behavioral therapy techniques which are long-lasting--and even fun!
The truth about debarking: debarking to stop dog barking problems treats the symptom of excessive barking, not the problem. Your dog is still barking excessively; the loud bark is just gone. And debarking a dog gets rid of some positive things at the same time. Also, there's always the risk of anesthetic. It's usually good to not anesthetize your dog for an elective procedure like dog debarking surgery unless it's absolutely necessary.

Free Ebook titled: "Dr. Dog Answers the 15 Most Commonly Asked Questions About Dogs..."
In this free ebook by Dr. Dennis Fetko, "Dr. Dog", you will find answers to questions including:"Can I change my dog's name? Everyone tells me no, but I hate the name he came with."
"Are pure bred dogs better than mixes or mutts?"
"How do I introduce a new dog to my existing one?"
Here's an excerpt from this free ebook:
"What is the most intelligent breed of dog?"
Dr. Dog: Intelligence is not breed-specific. There are bright and slow members of every breed. Things we relate to intelligence have nothing to do with breed.
Many people confuse intelligence with responsiveness. Some breeds are more responsive than others. We see this difference and we tend to say the more responsive breed is more intelligent. That's not true. Both breeds learn the lesson equally quickly and will remember it equally well. It's just that one likes performing more than the other.
If that type of snappy response appeals to you, select a breed noted for such actions like Poodles or Boxers or Dobermans or German Shepherds, or mixes containing those breeds. But don't expect that kind of response from an English Mastiff. They're wonderful dogs, but it takes them longer to do everything.

Debark a Dog: What Are the Risks in Dog Debarking?
What Consequences Can Debarking Your Dog Have?
If you are wondering how to debark a dog, Dog debarking surgery is not very difficult (although it does entail general anesthesia and surgical risks including bleeding and infection), but the rate of postoperative complications when you debark a dog is very high.
Some veterinarians estimate that 50% of dogs will develop problems after debarking surgery. These problems range from merely being annoying (the dog can regain his ability to bark within two or so years) to life-threatening (when scar tissue obstructs the dog's airway). To correct these complications from debarking surgery requires more surgery, more risks, and more money.
So the consequences of debarking your dog can put him at risk for ending up the shelter. This burdens taxpayers with the expense of dealing with yet another dog made essentially unadoptable by his owners.
In the United Kingdom they do not provide much information about how to debark a dog, since dog debarking is illegal; some states in the U.S. are considering laws making it illegal to debark a dog.
There are at least two other serious consequences regarding debarking. The city of San Francisco has been faced with one: the ability to disguise a large number of dogs on a property by debarking all of them.
The other is being considered in Ohio with legislation pending to prohibit debarking of "vicious" dogs. The bill's sponsors believe that attack-trained dogs who are made silent by debarking are "deadly weapons." Indeed, no law enforcement professional wants to come upon a large and menacing Rottweiler without warning or time to prepare.
In fact, this law, HB 350 was introduced after two events in Lucas County. There were debarked pit bulls that attacked officers as they were investigating crimes. If this law passes, veterinarians who perform the surgery could be convicted of a crime.

Good to read practical debarking information. Have tried everything to keep my schnauzer from barking in our new home. He's twelve, had two previous owners, and has severe separation anxiety when I leave home. My home owner's association is going to fine me for every "barking" incident, and I was desparate for information. Debarking may be a good solution for us.

I love my dog but I can not keep going on with the non-stop barking. There may be possiblities of complications but my dog has already been shot by a bb gun becuase of the barking. We have tried EVERYTHING and spent about $1000 on other solutions. What is more cruel waiting for my dog to be shot agian, getting rid of my dog or trying a simple surgery that would allow me to keep my beloved dog.
