I COULDN'T AGREE WITH YOU MORE! I am so sick of people saying that I would be a monster to have my Sheltie debarked! And I am also sick to death of them saying that it's my fault that they bark so much that I must ignore them or not train them. Umm... EXCUSE ME PEOPLE! My two Shelties both have their UD title and their MACH in agility and I take them for an hour walk every day. They bark because they are excited or they see like a squirrel, cat, deer, or another critter, LOL. I was going to debark my male first as he is the most annoying. He just gets so excited whenever he sees me! He's very happy, he gets down in the bowing position like "LET'S PLAY MOMMY!". My female has a far more high pitched bark but she doesn't bark quite as often. My ears do ring after our agility runs though! PLEASE LET ME KNOW ON AVERAGE HOW MUCH THIS PROCEDURE COSTS AND HOW YOU GO ABOUT FINDING AN EXPERIENCED VET THAT DOES THIS. THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!

- I am a small Sheltie breeder and have had my more "vocal" Shelties debarked for years and have never had a problem. The dogs come home and act like nothing happened. Once in a while I have one that comes back but my vet will re-do at no charge if that happens. Most of the time the bark is softened for life. We can still hear the dogs, but the sound doesn't carry across the neighborhood! I have never had any problems with the procedure over the years and it doesn't seem to phase the dogs at all. In my opinion it's much more humane than shocking the dog or yelling at it every time it starts barking...my Shelties can happily chase and bark at those squirrels all they want! The problem is there are too many people putting human emotions on dogs. Done properly this procedure is a blessing! More simple than a spay or neuter. I agree training should be a first option for pet owners, but "play barking" is not something that you can just train out of a dog.

- Tried everything to stop our dog barking,
Citronella collars - barked it dry
Shock Collars - too hyped to notice , just kept barking.
Behavioural Therapy - little effect over two years
Aversion Therapy - loud noises, stone filled tins - NAH!
Debarling - much better, the dog still barks but he can hear us over the noise now and much easier to control.

- Good to read practical debarking information. Have tried everything to keep my schnauzer from barking in our new home. He's twelve, had two previous owners, and has severe separation anxiety when I leave home. My home owner's association is going to fine me for every "barking" incident, and I was desparate for information. Debarking may be a good solution for us.

- I love my dog but I can not keep going on with the non-stop barking. There may be possiblities of complications but my dog has already been shot by a bb gun becuase of the barking. We have tried EVERYTHING and spent about $1000 on other solutions. What is more cruel waiting for my dog to be shot agian, getting rid of my dog or trying a simple surgery that would allow me to keep my beloved dog.

- some people are clueless. debarking can save the life of a very loud whiney dog that would otherwise be put into a shelter where it would be put to sleep. no one wants a separation anxiety laden bad personality dog. debarking keeps the dog in a home when all other measures have failed. i know from first hand experience how miserable it is when you can't get your dog to stop barking.

- Like previous commenter I was relieved when I realised that you didn't advocate debarking. Awful mutilation!
PS
Looks like a Thirty Day Challenge lens! Good job with the assignments.

- Wonderful lens. Initially, I was a little concerned because I thought that perhaps you were advocating 'debarking' as a remedy. However, I was extremely pleased to see that you recommend behavioural changes via working with your pet to alleviate the barking if it escalates to a bothersome level.
