What Kind of Dog Dish Bowl Do I Need?

A lot of people think that selecting a dog food bowl or a dog dish to feed their dog takes a little more thought than just picking up a plastic dog food bowl at the neighborhood dollar store. This is just not the case. Selecting the right dog dish for your pet involves a little bit more thought than that. There are several factors that need to be taken into consideration when it comes to selecting the right dog food dish to feed your dog and not all people are aware of these variables.

On this page you will find descriptions of the various types of dog food feeding containers available along with the pro and cons of each. This will help you to make a more knowledgeable decision when it comes to purchasing the perfect dog food bowl for your dog and for your home.

7 Steps to Selecting the Perfect Dog Food Dish for Your Dog Lifestyle

This should be a piece of cake to figure out, right? Plastic, ceramic or stainless steel are the usual choices you are given to feed your dog so what's so hard about that?

Hold on for a hot New York second. Does your dog have arthritis in his joints, a bad back or digestive problems? Does your dog travel a lot with you? Do you travel a lot without your dog? Perhaps you would just like to have a dog food bowl that matches your home decor.

Not a problem!

Here are the solutions you need to help you with selecting the perfect dog food dish for your dog and your lifestyle.

By reading these steps you will have the necessary information to make the selections that are perfect for your lifestyle.

Step 1 - Plastic Dog Food Bowls?

Plastic Dog Food Bowls

Plastic bowls are very inexpensive and come in a variety of colors, however, I do NOT recommend ever using a plastic bowl to feed your dog. The problem with plastic is that they absorb the toxins that they come into contact with and these toxins can be absorbed into you dogs system. These toxins can cause serious illness in your pet.

Dogs are chewers. There is no getting around that. Dogs can be trained not to chew; however, left to their own defenses with a plastic bowl, most dogs tend to chew them up; training or not. Swallowing hard plastic pieces by the dog can be extremely dangerous for the animal. The worst case scenario is that these pieces are swallowed and may become lodged in the pooch's throat, or very sharp pieces could cause internal lacerations of the esophagus, the stomach lining or the intestines.

If you must use plastic be sure it is in a very tough form; so tough that the dog can not chew it apart. If it is not, don't leave it lying around for the animal to chew on when you are not around.

Step 2 - Stainless Steel Dog Food Dish

Stainless Steel Dog Food Bowls

Aqua Gingham Pattern 3-Piece Stainless steel Dog Bowl Set by Martha StewartTraditional stainless steel bowls are economical, attractive in most any kitchen, and are a breeze to clean. Stainless steel dog bowls will also keep your puppy's drinking water nice and cool. Do your research to seek out stainless steel bowls with a rubber rim on the bottom of the bowl. The rubber rim will keep the bowl from tipping over and getting scooted across the floor by your puppy's nose.

Step 3 - Ceramic or Stoneware Dog Food Dish

Ceramic or Stoneware Dog Food Bowls

Petrageous Designs Sassy Brown and Pink Polka Dots 8Both stoneware and ceramic dog food bowls are sturdy and can come in a wide variety of colors and designs to coordinate with your decor.

Many companies will also customize your dog food bowl with your dog's name, family name or any slogan that you choose. Ceramic dishes will also keep your pets water nice and cool. Remember to make sure that they are dishwasher safe, unless of course, you only wash by hand like I do. These types often come in handy sets with matching treat jars as well.

Look for stoneware dishes that feature a high-glaze finish and that are dishwasher safe and lead free. Please remember to check on this as many items coming out of China do contain lead and will poison your dog. Usually, but not always, the high-glaze finish will mask the leaded paint until, with normal wear and tear, the glaze begins to chip away.

Step 4 - Elevated Dog Food Feeders

Elevated Dog Food Bowls

Classy Double Diner Blue Ceramic Elevated Dog FeederElevated, or raised, dog food bowls are fabulous. They are not only elegant to look at, but some even come with their own food-storage bins.

These types of dog food bowls are much easier to use for older dogs, who have contracted joint or arthritic conditions.
The elevated design brings your dog's food up to his ideal feeding level to minimize digestion and bloat problems while reducing strain on his joints and muscles.

Regardless of the size of your dog, the elevated dog food bowls will be beneficial to your dogs digestion, since your dog stands up straighter to gobble his food down.

The higher elevated raised dog food feeders work very well for any long-eared breeds such as basset hounds as the raised dog food bowls prevent those long ears from dragging in the food, or on the floor, while they eat.

Step 5 - Electronic or Automatic Dog Food Feeders

Electronic or Automatic Dog Food Bowls

An electronic feeder or an automated feeder may be the answer for people on the go.

Does your career keep you working late hours? Perhaps your family has planned an over night visit with Aunt Maggie or maybe you're a party animal and you're out playing at the clubs 'til the sun comes up in the morning.

An electronic feeder will automatically release a preset amount of food into your dog's dish according to the times you set, usually up to three times.

This does NOT mean for your dog to be left alone for extended periods of time on a regular bases.

Step 6 - Travel Dog Food Bowls

Disposible and Collapsible Dog Food Bowls

Small Turquoise Expandable/Collapsible Travel Cup Popware for Pets Often times you might like to bring your best friend along when you're out riding your bike, or you may enjoy taking him to the park, to the beach, or hiking on a mountain trail. You might even want to take him for a road trip.

In these cases either the disposable or collapsible dog food bowls are a great solution. The collapsible containers come in a variety of fun colors. They are a good value as they can be rinsed out and reused over and over. Look for disposable bowls that are environmentally friendly by being biodegradable, whenever you can. They are often difficult to find, however, more and more companies are beginning
to manufacture them as consumers become more aware.

Step 7 - Placemats for Dogs Feeding Areas

Dog Food Placemats

Dog food placemats make for easy clean-up of your dogs feeding area. The last solution for the ease of feeding your dog are the placemats that go under the dishes.

The place mats collect anything that may fall to the floor. They keep the floor clean and make cleanup a breeze. Simply pick up the mat when your dog is finished eating and wash it off. Now that you are able to make the right choice for your unique lifestyle, your pooch is ready to munch!
