How the E-Collar works

E Collars deliver a stimulation, often referred to as simply "stim" by professional trainers. The stimulation is most often controlled by a hand held device that the trainer handles. The majority of collars deliver an electronic pulse that is controlled via a hand held device although some can be triggered by the dogs bark. The transmitter is fit around the dogs neck and stim can last up to 12 seconds on most devices. E Collar training delivers results by punishing the dog for disobeying a command or engaging in unwanted behavior such as digging through trash or constant, unprovoked barking.

Types of Ecollars

E-collars come in two broad categories: trainer activated or dog activated.
A dog activated e-collar and a trainer activated can both deliver the same methods of stimulation. An Ecollar that is activated by the dog usually is triggered by vocalization (barking). They deliver the stimulation in several ways, but the most popular are:

  • Shock (disregard the negative connotation, when configured properly there is no injury to the animal)

  • Spray
    • Compressed air
    • Water
    • Citronella

  • Ultrasonic sound - only the dog can hear

Which ever type of collar you use for e-collar training, be sure to read the devices' instructions completely and read a book on proper dog e collar training.

Wonderful tool; fixed a critical issue
My wife and I love to hike with our German Shepherd. However, her (the dog) behavior had become an issue. Whenever, she sees another dog or horse, she loses her mind, and we lose control of her. We did not want to resolve ourselves to hike with her on a leash.

Now that we have this device she "comes" on command, and not on the second or third time we call... Read full review

Turned my 9 month old Rottie into a perfect gentleman I was very hesitant to use a shock collar on my dog so I tried everything else I could think of to control his jumping, barking and general disobedience. I worked with him myself, hired a trainer, and purchased an audio and spray correction device but nothing worked. With two small children in the house I could not afford to have an uncontrollable dog. Maybe if he were...Read the full review

Pretty good for Price Considering single collars can sell for hundreds I was suspicious of this kit because of the low price. The first kit I received didn't work but I got a replacement and it's ok this time.

The instructions were written by somebody who doesn't understand English very well. For example they describe the antenna as "anti-broken" and suggest you give your dog...Read the full review

Tri Tronics Bark Limiter XS Electronic Dog Collar

Tri Tronics Bark Limiter XS Electronic Dog Collar

Works like a charm for my Belgian Malinois The Bark Limiter XS is extremely effective for my Belgian Malinois. As you may know, Mal's are very barky.. which doesn't go over very well in my condo. The bark limiter has 5 different settings (for extra stubborn dogs), and I haven't had to go past setting number 2 for my dog. The thing I like most about this collar is it has a bark odometer to tell you how many times...Read the full review

Good collar for most needs
This is my third electronic dog collar and by far the best. The previous collars were a Tritronics original Sport and an Innotek IUT-300. The original Tritronics Sport collar worked well but was cumbersome to change levels and had a too limited range of correction. The Innotek worked well and I liked the tiny remote but the range was not adequate for my needs. While it...Read the full review

It works...
We bought this collar for our animal shelter rescued American Eskimo who barked ALL THE TIME. By barked all the time, I mean he barked and kept barking for 10 minutes or more. He barked at us, he barked at the other dogs, he barked at the cats, he barked at any noises inside or outside, he barked whenever someone walked in the door, he barked while he played and he barked...Read the full review

I've only had the collar for a week and only now had the chance to use it in the field ... all I can say is WHAT A DIFFERENCE! I should say that my dog already knew basic commands like "Come", "Sit", "Stay", "Heel", and "Down" but getting him to do those things off-lease was a real challenge. With the radio collar...Read the full review

Purchased this collar for our bichon-poo, he is a little yippy at times. Collar worked fine for about a week, then he started barking again, replaced the battery that cost $10.00, I figured we had a defective battery. Same thing, worked for a week and then the barking started again. Not sure what the problem is, but it seems like the battery only lasts a short time,...Read the full review

really works
We purchased this system due to the fact that we have 5 acres of open land and lots of neighboring cows for our dogs to chase. With my 2 older dogs, who have always been able to run loose, we took about two weeks of training them as instructed. They had no problem in learning. We then brought a young dog to our home who had always been enclosed in a yard with chain...Read the full review

My review is actually not on this product but rather on the Tritronics sport 50S. I've owned this product for over three years. I've used it every single day of those three years. Becoming a Dog Trainer

I've noticed a lot of activity around my neck of the words regarding people wanting to make a little side money with dog training so I will try and lead to some good resources. In my opinion, you should first get educated from the perspective of training your own dog, become very comfortable with that and then try to train another dog. I would recommend not dealing with a friends dog unless you are sure they are committed to the training process. You will never be able to train someones dog if they are not willing to do their homework.

When you're ready, the most recommended resource I can find is a dog training home study course. Give it a try and bring your comments back here!
