Just like any other food in you house, dog food has special requirements. For this lens, the storage options revolve around dry dog food storage, but canned food also has it's own requirements. Below are a few tips to help with both dry and canned foods that will ensure your dog always gets safe and nutritious food.

1. Even when you're using containers to store your dry dog food, keep it in it's original bag inside the storage container. That way you'll make sure it's stays safe.

2. Once a bag of food has been opened, try to use it within six weeks or sooner.

3. Calculate how much your dog eats and how long it lasts so you're not buying too much or have too much going to waste.

4. If you're buying extra to have available, buy smaller bags. Even at that, check the expiration dates on the bag to see how long they should keep. Generally, a sealed bag of dog food should last a year.

5. Make sure you rotate you dog food if you're buying ahead and storing.

6. Even when using dog food storage containers, keep in a dry, cool place.

7. Don't try freezing small bags of food because you'll only be adding moisture, which is never good.

8. Clean your dog food storage container each time you change food bags.

9. Opened canned food can be stored in the refrigerator for three day with a lid.

10. Freeze opened canned food if you're not going to use it within three days in plastic or glass freezer container.

11. Store canned food in a cool, dry place and use before the expiration date.
