How To Groom A Dog At Home

As Third Generation owners of two grooming shops, we are sometimes amazed at the dogs that are brought in to us when they could easily be done at home by the owner. Granted, some folks just don't have the time, or they cannot physically handle the dog. We wouldn't recommend that you attempt to hand scissor a poodle (ever!) or shave down your dog (without a little training), but we do think that many of you could save a ton of money by learning how to groom your dog at home and learning how to shave your dog at home.

And that's why we are here...to give you information on how to groom a dog at home.

Can you groom your dog yourself?

Of course you can. Many dog breeds are short haired or your dog may have long hair that you don't want touched. When you take your dog to the grooming shop, you are paying them to:

Bathe Your Dog

Dry Your Dog

Brush Your Dog

Clean Your Dog's Ears

Clip Your Dog's Nails

These are things that you can easily do yourself, with a little training. In some parts of the country, grooming shops will charge you $50, $60 or even $100 for the above services, EVERY TIME you bring the dog in to be groomed.

You can easily save hundreds of dollars per year by getting a little training on how to groom your dog at home. Another benefit to grooming your own dog is this: your dog will appreciate it because he/she trusts YOU more than anyone else in the world. Rather than having your dog spend hours or a whole day in a grooming shop, why not spend 45 minutes to an hour doing it yourself?

We recommend Amy West's "Grooming Your Dog At Home" as your starting point if you want to learn the basics and even many advanced dog grooming techniques. Get more information on Amy's "Grooming Your Dog At Home" by Clicking HERE

Dog Training And Dog Obedience

Now that you have your new dog, or you have been thinking that your dog's behavior isn't really as good as it should be, you need to have an understanding of why dog training is so important for you and your dog. Dog training and dog obedience training isn't really a hard thing to do, because the number one thing your dog cares about is your happiness. If you are happy with your dog's behavior, your body language tells your dog how happy you are, and he is happy too. This point is the number one thing people forget when they are dealing with a "bad dog"...a dog's number one goal is to please you.

Indeed! I am not a beautician, but I save half but brushing and shampooing my own dog. I go to the dog wash at the local dog park, so I don't have to get my own tub dirty. I would feel uncomfortable with the toenail clips, so I have them do it, but it is nothing to wash the dog.
