Annoying and Messy Dog Incontinence Issues? It May Not Be Your Dogs Fault.

Usually when a dog suddenly begins to have urinary accidents in the house, pet owners start to think it may be a behavioral issue. Our first thought might be that our dog has a behavioral problem something like l territorial marking or maybe submissive urination. But it's probably NOT the case.

If you have successfully potty trained your dog and they have been housebroken for many years but you suddenly find that you have a problem with them having accidents in the house, chances are your dog may have a health problem. Dog Incontinence also known as Canine Incontinence can cause them to urinate in the house. It's not their fault!

Dog Incontinence Mean?
Canine or Dog incontinence is defined as: involuntary passing of urine.

In other words, a normally house trained dog will lose control of its bladder. Problem can range in severity, some dogs experience a small amount of leakage others a unintentional complete voiding of the bladder. Leakage often occur while the dog is sleeping.

Canine incontinence can (not always) be a serious medical condition which affects mostly older dogs but can also affect younger dogs depending on the specific cause.

Important Side Note
It is important to know that incontinence is very different from....
- Submissive urination, which occurs in many dogs to some degree as a sign of submission.
- Territorial making, which some dogs do to "claim their area"

Urinary accidents are very frustrating and messy, especially when your dog has been housebroken for many years. Because your dog's incontinence may be caused by a medical condition as simple as a UTI infection or something a lot more serious, it is important to get them evaluated as soon as possible.

Dog Pee Pads aka Wee Wee Pads or Puppy Training Pads

Dog Incontinence Pads comes in 2 styles Washable and Disposable

Dog Pee pads also known as Wee Wee pads or Puppy Training Pads can help keep your pet dry and comfortable.

Dog pads come in 2 different styles.
Washable vs. Disposable

WASHABLE pads are a little more expensive upfront BUT save you tons and tons of money in the long run because they can be used 100's of times. These washable pads also don't move around as easily as the disposable ones and cannot be shred (by most dogs, anyways) if your dog has a chewing problem.

DISPOSABLE pads have the convenience of an easy clean up BUT cannot be reused and must be thrown away in the trash after every use.

Please do your research before you buy, here are some examples.

What Are Symptoms of Dog Incontinence?

When Should You Seek Medical Help For Your Dog?

Always seek veterinary care if your dog experiences episodes of incontinence. Your dogs urinary accidents could be the cause of something simple that can be easily treated. There are also several diseases which can cause involuntary bladder leakage and your veterinarian can get to the underlying cause.

- Drips of urine around the house
- Soaked Area Were Dog Slept
- Irritation of the Skin
- Excessive licking of the area

Are you finding drops of urine around the house where your Dog has been? Symptoms of dog incontinence range from a few small drips of urine around the house to a soaked dog bed. Another common side effect is skin irritation due to urine sitting on the skin. Urine makes the area inflamed and red.

Is Female Dog Incontinence Common?
Both male and female dog incontinence can occur but it usually affects senior dogs or middle aged Dogs, rarely puppies. If your young dog or puppy has symptoms of urinary incontinence it is usually due to a birth defect such as ectopic ureter. When this happens usually one or both of the ureters by-pass the bladder and connects to an abnormal location. This causes the puppy to drip urine involuntarily.

As mentioned before this is very different than submission urination.

No matter their age, urinary tract infection or UTI for short is the most common cause of incontinence in dogs. Left untreated serious kidney or bladder infections can result. So if you even suspect your Dog may have a UTI infection get to your Vet treat as soon as symptoms are noted.

Causes of Urinary Incontinence in Dogs

Age of your dog, and if you have a female dog if she is spayed or not, may increase the incidence of incontinence. One of the first things that your veterinarian will want to rule out UTIs and blockages.

Bladder infections may cause a dog to have strong urge to urinate and may cause them to urinate more often and possibly in unusual places. Sometimes if bladder infection has gone undetected for a long period of time it can damage the bladder preventing it from stretching, that makes it harder for your dog to hold its urine.

Dog incontinence can be a result of blockage of the urethra by a kidney stone or other obstruction. When the bladder becomes full some urine may leak around that obstruction. A blockage is very serious and needs to be addressed immediately if not it can claim the life of your dog. Your dog must receive immediate medical care.

After your veterinarian rules out that a UTI, kidney infections or urethral obstructions are proven not to be the cause of the incontinent problem, some other reasons that dogs may experience incontinence are:

- Diabetes (can cause the dog to drink large amounts of water)
- Certain medications
- Kidney diseases
- Prostrate disorder
- Weak bladder sphincter (mostly affects female dogs)
- Spinal degeneration of injury
- Hormone responsive incontinence (mostly affects spayed female dogs)
- Congenital abnormalities

Whatever the cause, your dog needs veterinary care as soon as any symptoms are observed. If you suspect there a problem, it's always safer to let a professional make the diagnosis and treat the problem. In simple cases a simple course of medication will solve the problem. In other, more serious cases, surgery could be required to save the life of your pet. If treated early your pet has a better chance of a quick (less costly) recovery.
