For thousands of years, dogs have been associating with people, whether as companions or as working dogs - guarding, guiding, or hunting. Consequently, many dog paintings and artworks have been produced featuring man's best friend. On this page I will share some of these paintings which have been produced over the centuries and introduce you to the artists.

About Edwin Henry Landseer

Sir Edwin Henry Landseer, RA (7 March 1802 - 1 October 1873) was an English painter, who is famous for his paintings of animals - particularly horses, dogs and stags. But he is most well known for his sculptures of lions in Trafalgar Square, London. His artistic skill was recognized early, and at the age of 13, he exhibited his art works at the Royal Academy.

He was a very popular artist in his time and many middle class homes had reproductions of his work. Queen Victoria also commissioned Landseer to do many family portraits and paintings of her pets. His dog paintings were so popular that he even has a dog named after him: the landseer.

John Henry Dolph was born in 1835 in Ashtabula County, Ohio. He began his painting career by doing decorative painting on carriages and coaches. In 1855 he took up portrait painting but later turned to landscape scenes. He particularly liked painting farmyard scenes and animal life but these didn't sell well. After discovering that his cat paintings were selling though, he started painting cats almost exclusively, becoming known as the leading cat-painter of America.

Arthur John Elsley (20 November 1860 - 19 February 1952) was a popular English painter, famous for painting children and animals. At a young age, Elsley often visited the zoo to study animals and at the age of 14, he began attending the South Kensington School of Art. His paintings were much in demand by the new affluent middle class and were regularly reproduced in soap advertisements, calendars and even on the covers of magazines.

About Maud Alice Earl

Like her father, uncle and half brother, Maud Alice Earl (1864-1943) was a famous, British-born animal painter. Her first teacher was her father, who had her draw dog, horse and human skeletons to improve her skills. She later attended the Royal Female School of Art. She specialized in dog paintings and her work became very popular. She even painted for Queen Victoria and King Edward VII.

After World War 1 she moved to New York where she painted birds and stylized portraits of dogs and. By this time, engravings of several of her pictures had been published in books and publications.

Louis Agassiz Fuertes (1874 - 1927), an American artist / ornithologist (studied birds), was just 20 when he decided to focus on painting birds. He traveled widely, across the United States of America, Bahamas, Mexico, Canada, and even Ethiopia in his study of birds. His paintings were used as book illustrations and background dioramas for a museum.

German Expressionist Painter

Franz Marc (February 8, 1880 - March 4, 1916) was a German painter and printmaker, one of the key figures of the German Expressionist movement. He was a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), a journal whose name later became synonymous with the circle of artists collaborating in it.

Franz Marc was born in 1880, in Munich, Kingdom of Bavaria. His father, Wilhelm, was a professional landscape painter, and his mother Sophie was a strict Calvinist. In 1900, Marc began to study at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, where his teachers would include Gabriel von Hackl and Wilhelm von Diez. In 1903 and 1907 he spent time in France, particularly in Paris, visiting the city's museums and copying many paintings, a traditional way that artists studied and developed technique. In Paris, Marc frequented artistic circles, and was able to meet numerous artists, including the actress Sarah Bernhardt. He discovered a strong affinity for the work of Vincent van Gogh.

Pedro Nuñez de Villavicencio (1635-1700) was a Spanish painter of the Baroque period.

He was born and died in Seville. Trained by Murillo. Was named a knight of the order of San Juan. With the order he performed duties in Malta, where he met Mattia Preti. Returning to Spain, along with Murillo, he helped establish the Academia de Seville. When Murillo died, he traveled to Madrid.

About Cassius Marcellus Coolidge

Cassius Marcellus Coolidge (November 12, 1844 - January 24, 1934), was an American visual artist, best known for his paintings in the "dogs playing poker" genre. He was also known as Cash Coolidge (sometimes spelled Kash).

Born in Antwerp, New York to abolitionist Quaker farmers, Coolidge was known by the nickname "Rash" to friends and family. While he had no formal training as an artist, his natural aptitude for drawing led him to create cartoons for his local newspaper when in his twenties. He is credited with creating Comic Foregrounds, life-size cutouts into which one's head was placed so as to be photographed as an amusing character, common at midways and carnivals.
