Crucial Steps for Dog Potty Training! Part 1...

Saving Your Home From the Potty Habits of Your Pooch!

Have you begun to think that getting a dog was a bad idea simply because of the potty situation? This can be a disturbing problem win it comes to the excitement of getting your new pet.

However, potty training your dog doesn't have to be the trouble that gets in between you and your new pooch.

As long as you follow a strategy which includes aspects of your dogs diet, a strict schedule for teaching him where to go, and lots of praise, potty training a dog can actually be quite simple - though requiring patience. This article will show you exactly what steps to follow.

A Huge Cause of Headaches in Potty Training a Dog!

You have to know that giving your dog a healthy dog diet will be a huge factor in how difficult the process is. Yet it's an aspect that people often miss right off the bat. It's important that you're sure to feed your dog at the same time every day, which will then get your dogs body on a eating/potty routine.

As well, it's imperative that your dogs diet includes high quality, high nutrient food that contains no sugary treats, which will wreak havoc on your dog's digestive system. Getting the diet variable correct can be the difference in success or failure without too much headache.

Keeping Your Doggy on a Tight Leash and Schedule

The next order of business is the schedule you use for the dog potty training. We went over feeding your dog at the same time, which is crucial. Also hugely important is to be sure to take your dog out very frequently. This may seem obvious but some people will take the dog out when they think it should be time for the dog to have to go, instead of creating a routine where the dog learns to go on demand.

Always use a leash and take the dog to the same spot every time. The dog will then associate that spot with going, and therefore know that when he's there - on a leash - it's time to go.

It's important that you go out with your dog, and actually bring him to the spot or else it will be just an excuse for him to go out and play. This brings up another point.

When taking your dog out to go potty, you'll want to be sure to take care of business first, and then play, and not the other way around. This shows the dog that he'll be rewarded with playtime if he goes. Done the other way around, he'll delay in order to get to stay out longer if he knows that as soon as he goes potty, he'll have to go back inside.

Crucial Steps for Dog Potty Training...Part 2!

The Two Most Important Aspect for Potty Training Your Dog

Teaching Your Dog to Poop On Demand...

You want to show your dog that he or she must go by using words for eliminating, such as "Good Dog, Potty!" or something along those lines. This again teaches your dog to go on demand.

You should always take your dog out first thing in the morning, and about ½ hour after meals.

Remember, you're trying to set a routine in motion. In the beginning, especially for puppies, frequent breaks through out the night will be necessary. Probably around every three hours for the first couple of weeks and then stretching that time out little by little as the dog learns and matures enough to hold it through the night.

Reward Your Dog for a Job Well Done!

The last essential thing to remember is that dogs learn by rewards and not by punishment, therefore be sure to praise excitedly when potty training your dog. The best rewards for a dog are positive attention such as a few minutes of play, or petting and a treat.

Accidents Will Happen...

There will be accidents, this you can count on, but you should never scold or punish your dog for this. It never works to rub your dogs nose in the pee or poop, this just shows the dog that they should never pee or poop in view where you can find it. Make sure to clean the dirty spots immediately, making extra special to remove all of the smell. Dogs will often go in the same spot again, if there's any lingering odor from there last accident. This is to mark its territory.

While potty training your dog isn't the easiest thing in the world, taking the right steps diligently and not half heartedly - along with some good ole' love and patience will get you and the pup through it without tons of unnecessary pain and agony. A good diet, a strict schedule, and lots of praise should do the trick.
