Help Me Decide: Dog Teeth Cleaning with Anesthesia or Non Anesthetic Dog Teeth Cleaning?

Help Me Decide What Kind of Dog Teeth Cleaning to Choose

It's time to have my dog's teeth cleaned for the first time. I don't know what to do. Should I have my vet clean the dog's teeth with anesthesia, or go with a pet supply store and get non anesthetic dog teeth cleaning? There are pros and cons to both ways, and I want to make sure I choose the best way to clean my dog's teeth.

So, I'm opening this up to you, the Squidoo community (and guests who found this page) to tell me your experiences to help me make a better decision. Thanks in advance!

Dog teeth cleaning with anesthesia

LaraineRose says:

My dog needs cleaning on a regular basis. My daughter's dog has no problems with his teeth. We buy very expensive food for our dog. I have tried using the dog toothpaste on her but nothing seems to work. So we are stuck paying for dental care from the Vet. Very expensive!

TransplantedSoul says:

I think this would allow a better job to be done.

Pukeko says:

I don't think dogs would like it anymore than we do, and since they can't understand why this is happening, I would go with the anesthesia.

sandyspider says:

It depends on the dog and if the vet feels comfortable enough with the dog not under anesthesia. I don't think my dog would do good unless he was under.

jmsp206 says:

It depends on how old the dog is.If quite young I would go for 'the dog teeth cleaning with anesthesia' option, as it really gets the teeth clean and maybe use the other products in between.
If the dog is elderly then it would have to be non-anesthesia.

Non-anesthesia dog teeth cleaning

Mary says:

Avoid anesthesia if you can. However, make sure you use a company that is reputable and works under the supervision of a veterinarian, like Pet Dental Services. Teeth cleaning at a grooming shop, or outside of a veterinary office is illegal for a reason!

Kim says:

Whenever anesthesia can be avoided I prefer ~ for the safety and well being of my pet. I have a short faced dog and even though she is only 3 years old I am still concerned about putting her under.

RosemaryB says:

I havent had my dog long and so Im not an expert in this but I would say no to anaestheitic. Obviously it depends on the dog - but my vet calls him an angel dog and he is. Im not just saying that. Anyway.... back to the vote.

Aaron says:

Also keep in mind, it is not the Veterinarian that does the teeth cleaning under Anesthesia, nor is it closely monitored. It is almost always a Vet Tech that does the cleaning. Personally, the video above, Under Anesthesia looks very inhumane. that's my two cents. I hope it helps!

I am happy to see this lens. We should treat our pets as we would ourselves. It probably is painful for them to have sore gums.

Nice lens on topic pet owners often don't pay much attention to, until it is too late
