There are many factors and features that dog training collars can have that can make them confusing to use.

Everyone's Training Tool

Electronic training collars are increasingly being used by professional trainers and amateurs alike, and for a wide variety of reasons. These systems can be utilized to train for sport, hunt, field, show, trials, or for basic or advanced obedience training. The versatility, humaneness, and ease of use of electronic training collars enable them to be employed by the professional, or by an enthusiastic and educated pet owner. However, in either case, it is vital to have a good working understanding of what these systems are, and how they function. Remember that, if not used correctly, this or any other type of training can be harmful to your dog's mental and physical health.

In general, an electronic training collar allows a handler to remotely correct a dog's behavior. This is accomplished through the application of a small electrical stimulation. These systems come in two parts: the handheld transmitter, which sends the signal, and the collar, which has a receiver attached to it. The receiver is typically fitted with two probes that press against the dog's neck. When the dog needs a correction or adjustment, the appropriate function is accessed on the transmitter, the signal command is sent to the receiver, and the collar issues a mild correction in the form of an electrical stimulation to the dog.

The most important function of an electronic training system is the adjustable intensity level. This refers to the actual level of correction that the dog receives, and can vary greatly from system to system. The intensity level can be very low, for simple corrections, or it can be set quite high. Each training situation and each dog will require a unique intensity level that may sometimes fluctuate, so it is important to be aware of your dog's reactions to your commands and corrections. In addition to the actual intensity level, another factor for consideration is the type of correction issued. Most transmitters come with two ways to issue a correction: a continuous correction that is applied for as long as the control is depressed, and a momentary correction that lasts for less than one second. Again, each dog and each situation is unique, and will require study to determine what levels and controls should be utilized during what scenarios.

Range refers to the distance a transmitter can be from the receiver while still retaining ability to send a working signal. Range is a crucial consideration, and can vary from 250 yards to over a mile. Range is affected by obstacles, terrain, weather, and a number of other factors. In general, purchasing a system with a very long range is usually the best choice. However, certain types of training call for different ranges. For instance, obedience training in the backyard will allow for the shortest range of 250 yards to be utilized, while training to flush birds will require a range of a half mile or more.

Other features to consider are the size and design of the transmitter and its functions. Remember to choose a transmitter that fits comfortably in your hand, and is completely weatherproof. Large buttons that are easy to depress, and ergonomically designed dials are usually best, especially if you will be wearing gloves while operating the transmitter. In addition, selecting an electronic training system that allows multiple dogs to be trained at the same time will greatly increase the overall value that an e-collar system can provide.
