Dog with Baby - A Good Match?
Are some dogs just dangerous? Is this about careless owners? Or is there something we can really do to prevent our dogs getting to the state of attacking our children?
If we introduce them carefully, then won't it all go well?
Dog with Baby - Myths Debunked!
1. Give your dog a blanket that belongs to baby. This will help him acclimatize.Acclimatization takes place over a period of time. Your dog will not be prepared for your babys arrival by a simple sniff at a blanket.
2. Carry a doll round the house, and put it in the babys crib, and treat it like a baby - your dog will then recognise the baby when they come into the house.
Dogs work with a sense of smell. Your dog will smell that the doll is not a baby and in fact smells of plastic, the same plastic as his toys. He may end up snatching the doll and that will add to the worry of new parents to be. We want dog with baby to be safe and well!
Dog With Baby - How To Prevent A Dog Getting Jealous
An ounce of prevention is worth a tonne of cure!If you introduce your dog with baby correctly, though, all can be fantastic. This needs to be done in a certain way however. To explain more I would like to introduce you to John Wade.
John is an ethologist, which means he studies animal behaviour. When his wife was pregnant with his son, he heard the midwife speak on this subject and tell her patients the myths mentioned above. John knew that this was not right, and went on to study more about this. He realised that dogs who are jealous act out, displaying behaviours such as:
* Sometimes they start to house soil
* Sometimes they become destructive
* Sometimes bark non-stop
* Sometimes they become aggressive
and so he went on to write a book on the subject, aptly named How To Prepare Your Dog For Your Baby.
Dog With Baby - What People Say About John Wade!

"To refresh: we have a little baby and Dasher had developed an interest/territorialism in the baby toys, and raised her lip at our niece when she was playing with them.
You felt that Dasher could be trained out of it. Things have gone really well. We followed your recommendations, taking advantage of the "teaching moments" that you mentioned. She definitely doesn't concern herself with his toys the way that she used to, and often takes pains to avoid toy-ridden areas of a room. The rattles in particular used to make her have a doggie-on-crack look on her face, which doesn't happen anymore.
I feel like I know what to look for in her behaviour when other people's children are around, and how to tell her not only what not to do, but also what TO do. Behaviour on walks has improved to the point that we can walk with one adult + stroller + dog, which was not the case previously.
We are very happy about all of this. Our baby, Matheson, absolutely loves the dog, and it is still clear to us that she is on his side.
A few weeks ago he had a bad round of stomach flu. He was sleeping in his crib and I was grocery shopping and my husband was shaving. The baby threw up on himself in the crib.
Dasher came and got Murray and led him down the hall to the crib - normally she would walk behind down a hall but didn't this time. This is not the first time that she has voluntarily helped since your visit and we want to continue to value her presence in our family. We are grateful to you for helping us to keep her around and do so safely around our child and the children of others." - Susan Scollie & Murray Ebel
It sounds like Dasher is now a great example of how a dog with baby should be
