We have a little 7 pound Maltese/Shih-tzu mix. He's been a joy to train and we believe he enjoys his life more because he's well trained. We're all happier because of it.

- The Other End of the Leash
- A great book from a dog trainer who provides an animal behaviorist point of view. Helps you think the way dogs "think" so that you can communicate better with dogs in general.
Dogs don't like being pet on the head! Try petting your dog on the head, versus coming up under their chin and stroking their chin or chest. Watch their body language, their eyes, their ears. They tell the story.
More info like that in the book! - Crate Training your puppy.
- Crate training seems hard, but it is harder on you than the puppy and is well worth it down the road. Your relationship will be much better with a well trained dog than if you are constantly frustrated by the dog's poor manners.
In a nutshell - dogs won't pee/poo where they sleep. Give them a small crate to sleep in and they won't soil it. Let them out often, and they'll realize where they are supposed to go. It is all about diligence in the beginning, till they know well enough.
Sure, we had to wake up in the middle of the night and let him out. But he's a puppy! He needs a little extra care.
I wasn't any prouder than the day when he walked outside into the pouring rain to relieve himself. Of course, when he ran back in we gave him treats and dried him off! - 15 D's to training
- Nice list of tips/pointers to keep in mind while training your pup.
- Sirius puppy classes
- He's been to puppy 1, 2 and 3. Loved them all.
Our notes...
Patience is key.
Short training sessions, but many times a day.
Variety between sessions (don't work on sit constantly - it's boring for both of you).
Learning to change modes (play versus relax versus training) is important too.
Positive reinforcement is everything. Communication is a two way street - he's not the only one to blame...
