Are We Killing Our Dogs?

Every pet owner that really cares about their dog or cat has been watching, with great interest, and waiting for the dust to settle around the National Pet Food recalls of the past few months. What has been happening instead is that every few days, or at least it seems that way, another brand name pet food announces a recall.

Within the last 24-48 hours, several more pet food companies have made such announcements.

Natural Balance, Royal Canin and Blue Buffalo are the newest brand name dog foods to announce recalls of their products containing "Rice Protein Concentrate" that were contaminated with melamine**.

So why am I telling you this here... well, when the first recall happened I started looking for information on what exactly IS IN dog food and how is it made. What I found made me ill and mad at the same time. I found that the pet food on the shelves of most grocery stores and many pet stores was filled with the same kind of garbage I read about.

Over the coming days I hope to bring to light the things I found so that people can understand why I feel so strongly about using a certain brand of pet food and why I strongly recommend one pet food company I found doing my research.

The best choice I found for our dog, Razor, was Life's Abundance.

Life's Abundance uses ONLY human-quality ingredients from U.S. sources in their foods.

And as far as the latest recall... none of Life's Abundance products contain "Rice Protein Concentrate". What they DO contain is "whole brown rice". And there is no chance that contaminated wheat gluten (from previous recalls) came into contact with any of their products either.

** Melamine is a synthetic polymer which is fire resistant and heat tolerant. Melamine is a very versatile material and is used in making whiteboards, floor tiles, kitchenware, fire retardant fabrics, and commercial filters. Melamine is a chemical used in fertilizers in Asia and forbidden in pet food.

Do you want YOUR family pet eating this? If the answer is NO, then check out Life's Abundance Immediately.

History of Pet Food Recalls

Think Pet Food Recalls is only a recent occurrence? You'd be surprised. Pet food manufacturers have been doing major recalls since 1995.
  1. 1995 - Nature's Recipe - About 1-million pounds of dry dog and cat food. Pet owners complained that their pets were vomiting and had lost their appetite. The problem was a fungus that produced vomitoxin contaminating the wheat.
  2. 1999 - Doane Pet Care - Over a million bags of corn-based dry dog food that had been contaminated with aflatoxin. Products included the Wal-Mart brand, Ol' Roy and 53 other brands. There were 25 dogs that died.
  3. 2000 - Iams - 248,000 pounds of dry dog food that had been distributed in 7 states. There was an excess DL-Methionine Amino Acid, a urinary acidifier.
  4. 2003 - Go! Natural - Circumstantial association with some dogs suffering from liver disease; no cause was ever found.
  5. 2005 - Diamond Foods - a similar recall as Go! Natural. Moldy corn contained a very bad fungal product called aflatoxin. There were 100 dogs that died.
  6. More to come...

Animal Testing

"A Bone to Pick with Pet Food Companies"

One practice that has been exposed by this recall is pet food testing on live animals. Menu Food's deliberately fed the tainted food to their own lab animals. They were the first known victims. Tests began at the end of February 2007. The lab animals started to die a painful death from kidney failure just a few days later. Only after the first media reports did Menu Food's hastily change its story and started calling these terrible experiments "taste tests."

Menu Food's has been doing these kinds of tests for Iams for many years. Videos have shown that the poor unfortunate animals used in these experiments live in barren metal cages, have invasive experiments performed on them, are treated callously and show cruelty beyond belief.

For almost 10 months, a PETA investigator worked undercover in a laboratory paid by Iams to test its products. Some of the cruelty that she documented included the following:

  • Iams dogs dumped on a cold concrete floor after having huge chunks of muscle cut out of their thighs

  • Dogs and cats gone stir-crazy from confinement to windowless, dungeon-like buildings

  • A coworker who instructed her to hit the dogs on the chest if they quit breathing

  • Another coworker who talked about an Iams dog found dead in his cage, bleeding from his mouth

  • Cruel studies done by Iams involving forcing tubes down dogs' throats to make them ingest vegetable oil

  • Iams dogs with such severe tartar buildup on their teeth that it was painful for them to eat

  • Coworkers who talked about how they had had to go home because the ammonia fumes in the animal trailers were so overpowering that it made their eyes burn (try being one of the animals in those cages!)

If, AND ONLY IF... you have the stomach for it, then watch the video located here from PETA. This is CRUELTY BEYOND BELIEF!!!

Please Remember

by Lee Ann Rimes

Time, sometimes the time just slips away
And your left with yesterday
Left with the memories
I, I'll always think of you and smile
And be happy for the time
I had you with me
Though we go our seperate ways
I won't forget so don't forget
The memories we made

Please remember, please remember
I was there for you
And you were there for me
Please remember, our time together
The time was yours and mine
While we were wild and free
Please remember, please remember me

Goodbye, there's just no sadder word to say
And it's sad to walk away
With just the memories
Who's to know what might have been
We'll leave behind a life and time
I'll never know again

Please remember, please remember
I was there for you
And you were there for me
And remember, Please remember me

Please remember, please remember
I was there for you
And you were there for me
Please remember, our time together
The time was yours and mine
While we were wild and free
Then remember, please remember me

And how we laugh and how we smile
And how this heart was yours and mine
And how a dream was out of reach
I stood by you, you stood by me
We took each day and made it shine
We wrote our names across the sky
We ride so fast, we ride so free
And I knew that you had me

Please remember, please remember
