Nutcracker - Most Prized Possession

How does one decide which possession is their favorite? Like most people, I suppose, there are several things that are special to me; that I've had for years; and carted all over the country when I moved from place to place. Included in my list are a beer stein and pair of opera glasses that were my grandmothers.

As a professional photographer I have some prized photographic equipment like my Nikon-D700FX camera Then there's some jewelry that I prize. But, the possession that means the most just for itself, regardless of anything else is my cast iron dog nutcracker.

My Dog Nutcracker

This Saint Bernard cast iron nutcracker sat in our family's living room as far back as I can remember. It was on the right side of the fireplace hearth in front of the fireplace tongs and shovel.

Our Saint Bernard was used for the purpose intended, cracking nuts. A basket of unshelled nuts was kept nearby. We lived in Michigan and there were many cold winter days that the fire was lit and I sat enjoying the flames while eating nuts.

When my parents retired and moved to a smaller home, they gave me the nutcracker. I have lived in many different types of houses since then and this nutcracker has always had a place of honor in each living room.

It really is a prized possession. I believe it is rather valuable in the Antiques industry...or at least it used to be quite collectible.
