A Guide to Selecting the Best Dog Obedience Training Video

This lens is geared around informing dog owners 'WHY' obedience training will help improve their relationship with their dogs. I will discuss the different options available to a dogs owner in regards to obedience training. We will go over the upsides and downsides to each of these methods. We will be going over why it is a very important thing to go through obedience training with your dog and how it can help make life easier and better for your dog and your family! I also want to show how a good dog obedience training video can be one of the EASIEST and CHEAPEST ways to make the first step to eliminating unwanted behaviors and create a new and better dynamic between the dog and owner.

As a professional dog trainer for over 10 years, it has always been immensely satisfying to see people who were at their wits end from their dog, become happy and in control. One of the biggest disappointments has been that its hard to reach everyone who needs help, and not everyone can afford to hire a professional dog trainer. That is why I am so excited to see this amazing dog obedience training video come out as I think it will be able to help many more families than some of current options that have been available. It is not limited geographically like most trainers and costs a fraction of what a professional would charge.

I *LOVE* my puppy/dog, but he/she is driving me *CRAZY*!

Ever said or thought something like this?

As a professional dog trainer, I have heard those exact lines or ones very similar thousands of times. It is a very common problem. Very similar to how babies don't come with guides, neither do puppies or dogs! Things get a bit harder because dogs are not humans, and thinking like a human all to often results in problems for dog and owner. It's very easy to set the dog up for failure and to give yourself disappointment after disappointment. The upside is things don't have to be this way! When you learn how to communicate with your dog better, it only leads to quicker and better results. Who wouldn't want their dog to stop urinating or having bowel movements in the house? Who wants their dogs jumping all over guests, or not coming when called? Who wants their furniture and possessions destroyed by their dog over and over again? No one does, but a surprising number of people tolerate it because they do not know how to deal with it in a way that actually works. Obedience training for your dog is the fastest way to get things moving in a positive direction, towards a good quality of life for both dog and owner. If you have the right dog obedience training video, you can get started today, and go at your own pace!

There are a LOT of different kinds of training options available!

Which one is right for me and my dog?

There are a variety of options that provide obedience training for your dog. I will do my best to go over the benefits and downfalls to each one.

-'Send-off' Training-
This is where you send your dog to a trainers facility for an agreed upon amount of time. This typically ranges between 3-10 weeks depending on the goals and the difficulty of the dog. The upsides are that you as the dogs owner don't have to do much of the work. The downsides are that by not being a part of the training, it is very difficult for you to get the training to work for you. The normal result is that after getting your dog back, they are pretty well behaved for somewhere between a week and a month, and then the dog starts to regress and ultimately gets as bad or worse than they ever were. If the dogs owner is not involved in the training, they are not familiar and competent in applying the techniques that were used to train the dog. The dog will realize that you don't know what you were doing, and will quit being as obedient. There is also the side question of how ethical were the techniques employed to get your dog trained. Some trainers when facing the deadline of x amount of weeks are up will jump to very firm methods that the dogs owner may not approve of (ie... shock collars, 'force' training).

The bottom line for this style of training is that you will be without your pet for a few weeks or months, and will not know how to do things exactly as the trainer did. This will lead to the dog not obeying you long term and could possibly be worse long term (especially if it is a dominant dog).

-Group Classes-
Group class training is where dogs are taught obedience commands in a group environment. Group classes typically are structured with one instructor and between 5-20 dogs. Each dog is accompanied by their owner who does the majority of the obedience training with the dog at the class, and has homework training to practice until the next group class. The upsides to group classes are that they do involve the dogs owner into the training, and they also work towards socializing the dog with other dogs and people in a different environment. There are a few downsides however, starting with the location. You do have to get in the car and drive to a location at a specific time to do the lesson. The biggest problem is the ratio between instructor and the dogs and owners. It's hard to see everything going on or to give personalized direction when there are lots of dogs to train. In addition, group classes tend to focus on leash work and do not address problem behaviors such as: housebreaking, playbiting, digging, chewing, jumping, and not coming to name a few. And since the dog isn't learning this at your house, the training isn't as likely to fully 'take' when applied in your home. The best place to train your dog is in your home, not to mention its more comfortable and convenient for the owner as well.

-In Home Training-
This style of dog training is in my opinion one of the best options available. This style of dog training involves having a dog trainer come to your home, normally once a week, for an agreed upon number of weeks. There is practice done by the dogs owner in between those lessons very similar to group classes. The upsides to this are plenty. You get 1on1 instruction from the dog trainer, which normally involves the dog trainer teaching the concept to your dog as you watch. As the trainer teaches the dog, they teach you as well, and when the dog is doing it well enough, they make sure that you as the owner are capable and comfortable with whatever was taught. Having a trainer to just watch you and see what you are doing right or wrong makes things go so much smoother than any other approach I've ever seen. The training is also done in the dogs home, which is where it spends 95% of its time. This is the ABSOLUTE BEST venue for a dog to be trained in, as the dog is much more likely to act and preform more naturally, and associate that it needs to listen in the home most of all! The biggest downside to in-home training is the cost. It's not cheap to have a trainer come out to your home, and train just your family on how to get Fluffy or Fido to stop doing this or start doing that. But the results consistently outperform any other system I've ever seen in my 10 years as a professional dog trainer. Another often overlooked downside to in-home dog training is that not all dog trainers are equal. Some are awesome and some really aren't very good at all. Finding a quality dog trainer is hard, and again, not cheap.

Books-
There are TONS of books out there on how to train your dog. Books are a great cheap way to get started into training your dog and are the first option that most people turn to. The biggest problems with books are that there is a LOT of conflicting information in them, and its hard to tell what needs to be done without seeing it. Most people are torn between what to do in a situation when one book says 'do X' and another book says 'absolutely under no circumstances should you ever do X!'. If you don't know what to do, and why would you if you are reading a book that teaches you how to do it, its really hard to be the expert and decide which book is right. It can also be pretty painful to grasp techniques that are described through text alone.

Videos-
Dog training videos can be another great and cheaper training option. The have one of the same advantages that books do in that they are fairly cheap, especially when compared to the more traditional options of send-away, group classes, or in-home training. They also have the added benefit of being able to actually see what is being done. I cannot emphasize the importance of being able to see what happening enough. Simple little things like where to grab the leash, the way your hand needs to be or your body posture are all things that can make the training go so much quicker and easier. There is also the benefit of being able to do the training in your home at your own pace, whether that be quick or slow. You do not need to wait until that next group class or in-home lesson, you can go right ahead to the next thing when your dog has mastered whatever you were working on. The biggest downside of any video would be who is teaching it. I'll restate again that all dog trainers are not equal. Finding a video that is made by a good trainer can be difficult, but I will do my best to try to help out with that as well.

If a Video is a good cheap start, which one do I choose?

Helping sort through the crowd

If you are going to give a dog obedience training video a chance, it is important that you get one that is going to actually help you achieve the goals that you have set. My advice is to select someone that has been in the business a long time. I would also look for someone who's approach to training is one that you are comfortable with.

I bet everyone here reading this thinks that I am going to say, choose someone like me. Everyone always seems to promote themselves nowadays. The truth is, I only have 10 years in the business, and haven't even thought about making a dvd or video yet. Where I make my impact is training people 1on1 as an in-home dog trainer. While that is very satisfying, it would be nice to help even more people. If I cant do so personally, then the next best thing is to find another venue that will work. I live in Cary, North Carolina, and only train in a small area of the state so I am allready limited in my capacity to help people. Furthermore not everyone can afford me, and its discouraging for me to see someone who legitimately NEEDS help that I can't do because they can't afford it. If i could do the training free, well that would help more people for a short time, but I could only keep that up for so long. This new dog obedience training video can help to stride some of the boundaries that have stopped me from helping me.

Now I am happy to say that not only do you not have to wait to see anyone, but you won't have to shell out all that money to get that expertise! Even better, you can learn from the comfort of your couch! Debbie is so sure that you will be satisfied that there is an 8 week satisfaction guarantee on these videos. For a limited time she is offering these videos at the price of $47.00! That is a fraction of what you would pay any other style of trainer, and is really no more than the price of a couple books. Save yourself the hassle of learning it all yourself. WATCH and LEARN from a true MASTER of the trade with over 30 years experience under her belt.
