Fashions for Pets - Costumes, Hats, Sweaters and Accessories for Dogs
Clothes for pets and pet costumes are all the rage, especially during Halloween, Mardi Gras and weddings. Dog sweathers and fancy collars have been around for many years. It's not unusual to see a dog wearing a modified human tee shirt or neck bandanna, but more and more dogs are wearing custom fashions created just for pets. You can find dog goggles, dog hats, dog jackets, dog dresses, dog shoes and booties plus doggie jewelry and fashion bling. Cats get into the pet fashion trend, too, with fancy neck scarves, collars, kitty bling, cat sweaters and hats.
Some pet clothes are elegant high fashion styles, some are more functional and actually fun for your pet to wear. Other pet fashions and costumes seem to be at the very least uncomfortable and even downright embarrassing to the dog or cat who's wearing them. Perhaps not, though. Pets are forgiving and anxious to please - they might actually enjoy dressing up in pet costumes. When the weather is bad, a sweater or jacket for your pet is probably a good idea. And in harsh winter climates, boots that protect tender foot pads are actually recommended by vets.

Pet Fashions Are Big Business
Fashions for pets are hot - and they're big business. 2009 marked the 4th year of
Pet Fashion Week in the US. There are dozens of entrepreneurs starting at home and online pet fashion businesses selling anything from basic accessories, seasonal sweaters, coats, footwear and hats to custom made designer outfits that match their owner's fashions.
Fashions for pets have grown to full lines of clothing, accessories and specialty items. No longer limited to neck scarves and sweaters, dogs and cats can dress fashionably for all types of weather or any special occasion - you can even buy decorative nail covers or nail polish for your pet.
One of the most popular fashion trends for pets - and probably the most fun for humans - is dressing pets in costumes. Pet lovers dress their dogs and cats (and sometimes other pets) in costumes for all occasions. Mardi Gras pet costumes are very popular - there's a special Crewe Barkus in the parades just for dogs in costume.
You can find a pet costume for any holiday or special event - just browse a costume shop or department store and you'll find Halloween costumes, pet wedding clothes, holiday ears/antlers, funny hats, pet ties, pet scarves and pet birthday hats.

Canine Maid of Honor - Ain't She Sweet?
Meet Digger - my brother Mark's dog. She's a Rottweiller-Black Lab mix who looks ferocious but it's all a great disguise. Digger has been a delight to Mark and his family from her puppyhood until she grew older and more sedate - she's a quiet, almost pensive dog who rarely barks or growls. She looks intimidating when she's not smiling, but it's all a facade for this sturdy black dog with a heart of gold.
Digger moved all over the USA with Mark through the last 10 years of his lifetime career in the Marines. When my brother was unexpectedly widowed before he turned 40 Digger mourned the loss of her "mom" but was a source of great comfort to her "dad."
During my brother's final overseas deployment with the Marines stayed back in the states with me and my younger brother, patiently awaiting her master's return and his official military retirement. About 2 years after Mark left active duty and settled in Pennsylvania, he met and married a new lady love. Digger was delighted to be "Best Dog" at his wedding - she smiled this happy grin as he tied on her wedding bonnet.

- Neat topic. Have never dressed my dog but I think it is cute. I am practical and think that pet owners can dress their pooches if they wish, but remember to donate to animal charities to help out less fortunate animals.
