The Truth Behind Dog Training

Can You Really Teach An Old Dog New Tricks?

We have all been there at least once in our lives. Our dog is the sweetest and gentlest creature you can find when they are home alone with us, but as soon as a guest comes knocking at the door, they turn into an owner's worst nightmare. Whether it is the incessant barking that never ends, or the inappropriate sniffing that is considered ok in the dog world, these are some of the most common bad behaviours that tend to scare off any guests or even family members from ever wanting to come back. While you have probably tried every dog training guide or technique on the market, here are some key tips that can help you break your dog of its bad habits once and for all.

First, you need to be consistent. When you finally decide to try to break your dog of his bad habits, you need to stick with the plan. Whether your goal is to finally have your bed all to yourself, or you want to stop your dog from barking at every person that passes by, you need to be consistent with your training when your dog initiates the inappropriate behaviour. If you tell them no one minute, and nothing the next, you are sending mixed messages to your dog. For example, if someone told you that you couldn't do something one day and that next you could, you would probably end up feeling somewhat confused as to what was right and wrong. Well the same thing happens to your dog. When they get told no one minute, and yes the next, the bad behaviour will continue because you are not instilling in your dog what is right and wrong. Just be consistent and in no time your dog will be the perfect little gentleman you had always dreamed of.

Second, you need to make sure your dog knows who is Alpha of the pack. In order for your dog to respect you and listen to the commands that you give, you need to make sure you are the one in control. While we all love our dogs dearly, you still need to make sure they know who is boss. This does not mean you need to hit or utilize any form of negative punishment on your dog. They need to be aware that you are the Alpha of the pack and that they need to look to you for guidance. Utilize a calm and assertive demeanour with your dog and in no time they will realize that you are the boss. As soon as you give in to those pathetic puppy dog eyes, your dog realizes that you are relinquishing control which can cause them disobey commands. Just make sure to keep the same demeanour no matter how pathetic your dog may look and he will be your perfect little furball for life.

Lastly, remember to have fun. While your dog's bad behaviour may be frustrating from time to time, you still need to make some time in your schedule to have fun and play with your dog. Since most bad behaviours are caused by boredom, taking some time out of your day to either go for a walk or play with your dog can do wonders for their behaviour.

These are just a few of the tips that can help you turn your dog into the perfect little lady or gentleman you had always dreamed they would be. Make sure they know who's Alpha in your little pack, and stay consistent with your training techniques and you will be on your way to breaking your dog of all their bad habits once and for all.
