Welcome to Dr Lindsey Wedemeyer's Canine Acupuncture Lens!

Acupuncture is growing in popularity, and is an accepted form of complementary, holistic medicine for people. Research on conditions such as arthritis in people has shown that acupuncture has definite pain-relieving effects. Acupuncture is also being used by more and more vets to treat a whole range of problems in pets, and especially dogs. Acupuncture works - its effects in animals show that it does not just work as a placebo. No dog will be thinking, 'Great - I'm going to feel so much better now I've had some acupuncture!'. Contrary to popular belief, acupuncture on dogs is not painful - indeed, many dogs happily greet their acupuncturist and fall asleep during their treatment! Read on for more information about on acupuncture in dogs and find out about a great new eBook by veterinarian and certified veterinary acupuncturist Lindsey Wedemeyer MA VetMB CVA CVH MRCVS.

Acupuncture For Dogs??

It may sound surprising, but acupuncture is an extremely useful therapy for dogs, and is beneficial in a huge variety of conditions. It can also be used preventatively in healthy dogs.

Acupuncture is great if...

...you are tired of watching your dog suffer from a chronic condition, despite conventional medical treatment

...you don't like the side effects your dog suffers from expensive drugs

...you would like a more natural, gentle therapy

...you feel there must be a better solution than just using drugs to cover up your dog's symptoms

...you would like to take a more holistic, preventative approach to your dog's healthcare

What is Canine Acupuncture, and What is its History?

Acupuncture is the insertion of extremely fine needles into specific points on the body, and is part of one of the world's most ancient systems of medicine - Traditional Chinese Medicine. Acupuncture was developed in China over 4000 years ago and is still one of most commonly used medical systems in the world.

The ancient Chinese developed acupuncture techniques for dogs as well as people, and discovered acupuncture points unique to dogs. Today, acupuncture is becoming increasingly popular as its effectiveness in dogs in a variety of conditions has been demonstrated.

Acupuncture is an ancient therapy that is still relevant today

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body. Contrary to what you may think, it is not generally painful!

Isn't Acupuncture Painful??

When acupuncture on dogs is first mentioned, most people's first thought is that it sounds painful, and they would not want it done on their dog! When I first met many of my clients, this was their first reaction too. Some commented that I better be a good darts player, as I wouldn't get anywhere near their dog!

However, the vast majority of dogs do not share this view. The same dogs whose owners thought they would be my dart boards didn't even flinch when the needles were inserted, and then promptly fell asleep!

The needles used for acupuncture are tiny, a fraction of the size of a normal hypodermic needle. Over 95% of patients are comfortable with acupuncture, including most of those whose owners do not initially believe they will tolerate it, as it is not generally painful.

What I Found When I Started Treating Dogs With Acupuncture

As a veterinarian, I quickly grew tired of seeing dogs still suffering, despite receiving the best conventional medicine has to offer. Every day I saw old, arthritic dogs still in pain and not enjoying life, despite receiving pain-killing drugs. I was researching on the Internet and came across acupuncture. This led to me traveling from the UK to the US to take a veterinary acupuncture course and first become certified in acupuncture, and later also in Chinese herbal veterinary medicine.

For several years (before I relocated to the US), I ran my own specialized acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine referral practice, treating all animals from dogs and cats to horses and cattle. I found it incredibly rewarding to successfully treat animals that modern medicine had given up on. Some of my patients would otherwise have been put to sleep; others were resigned to a life of drug side effects or residual symptoms. These animals could be helped by acupuncture, often dramatically.

What Evidence is there that Acupuncture on Dogs Works?

There has been much research on acupuncture in humans, and studies have proved its pain-relieving effects and benefits in many various conditions. There is much less research on acupuncture in dogs, and evidence mostly comes from analysis of cases treated with acupuncture and the effects seen. Examples include:

Acupuncture for canine arthritis
A study of acupuncture was performed with 65 arthritic dogs who were no longer responding to conventional medicine to control their pain. The only options left for these dogs using conventional medicine were a life of pain or euthanasia. After acupuncture treatment, 70% of these dogs had an improvement of greater than 50% in mobility and gait (Schoen 1986).

Acupuncture for spinal disc disease
The usual treatment for spinal disc herniations ('slipped discs') is medications with or without surgery. Acupuncture has been found to be beneficial in the great majority of cases, and its effect is comparable to that of surgery (Janssens). Given this, acupuncture should be a far preferable treatment, as there is none of pain, risks or recovery time associated with spinal surgery.

Want To Find Out More About Acupuncture For Dogs?

In my acupuncture practise, I found that many clients had only just discovered the possibility of acupuncture for their dog, and often told me, "If only I had known about this sooner!" I have to agree. It is obviously easier to treat patients who have just been diagnosed with a particular condition, and so have relatively mild symptoms, than to be presented with severely ill patients, for whom acupuncture is a 'last chance', tried more out of desperation than hope or knowledge.

I have written my new eBook, 'Acupuncture for Dogs: A Guide for all Dog Owners' so that more dog owners can find out about acupuncture's benefits, and so more dogs can be helped by acupuncture.

This eBook enables owners to make an informed decision about whether acupuncture is right for their dog, by demonstrating acupuncture's scientifically proven benefits and actual case studies from my practise, where real dogs were helped by acupuncture.

In my book, you will learn:

- What acupuncture is, its history and how Chinese medical theories are used in diagnosis

- Myths about acupuncture that might stop you from seeking it for your dog - find out the reality

- How acupuncture works and how it is done on dogs

- Effects acupuncture has been proven to have on the body and in various diseases

- Safety of acupuncture

- Procedures related to acupuncture: moxibustion, aquapuncture, electroacupuncture, laser acupuncture and gold bead implantation

- How to tell if acupuncture could help your dog, specific conditions which can benefit and evidence it works

- How acupuncture can benefit healthy dogs and prevent disease

- What to expect from a veterinary acupuncture consultation

- How to find a trained and qualified veterinary acupuncturist

'Integrative' Medicine - Combine The Best of Conventional Medicine And Acupuncture To Optimize Your Dog's Health!

Of course, there is no medical 'silver bullet' and no miracle cure in either conventional medicine or acupuncture. I do not advocate rejecting or abandoning modern medicine - modern medical advances have, of course, saved many lives and there are cases where modern surgery or medicines may be the best answer, or even essential to save the life of a dog. Instead, I feel the best approach is a combination of the best aspects of both - an approach now known as 'integrative' medicine. Veterinarians trained in acupuncture are ideally equipped to provide this for your dog.
