Dog Agility for anyone

Pet owners come up with so many creative ways to have fun with their pets. Agility is just one of them. Whether dog, cat, or rabbit, your pet will enjoy leaping, jumping, and running around, especially if you join him.

Perhaps pet agility had its beginnings in equine steeplechase which began in the 1700s, in Ireland. Horses had to be able to run, jump, wade through water and otherwise maneuver cross country in the fox chase. Patterned after equine steeplechase, dog agility was born in 1978 as entertainment at the Crufts Dog Show in England. Since then mixed breeds, as well as purebreds, have been leaping hurdles and negotiating tunnels, weave poles, A-frames, and teeter totters. It wasn't long before cats and rabbits got in on the fun as well. Contrary to what most people think, both cats and rabbits can be cooperative and trainable.

The agility competitions involve an obstacle course. The requirements for each activity are very strict. They must be followed exactly or the dog will lose points from his possible score.

The obstacle course involves a series of activities that are timed. The activities include a seesaw, a tunnel, several jumps, a stay on a table, and several obstacles that involve weaving in and out.

Border Collies

They love agility and flyball

Border collies are one of the smartest dog breeds in the world. They are from the herding group, and are very active dogs. They make excellent herding dogs, because of their intelligence and ability to reason situations out for themselves, as well as their speed and stamina. They also make great pets for people who lead an active lifestyle, and wants a dog to jog with, or one that will play fetch or frisbee all afternoon. Border collies excel at frisbee, fetch, agility, flyball, and just about any activity a dog can be taught to perform. Border collies have even been used in search and rescue work.
