Fit 'n' Furry's Tips on Keeping Dogs Safe This Summer
-Provide plenty of water all day long
-Provide shade if your dog is outdoors
-Keep their paws off hot pavement and sand
-Use flea, tick & heartworm preventative treatment monthly
-Keep out of areas with dry weeds, look out for foxtails
-Beware of heat exhaustion
-Don't leave dogs in the car if it is hotter than 70 degrees outside

Other things to keep in mind on walks or hikes:
Be aware of other dogs and other animals in the wild, which may carry diseases such as rabies. Also, be aware of stagnant water which may be contaminated by parasites or bacteria such as Giardia or Leptospirosis, these can make your dog sick and may even be contracted by humans. Bee stings on dogs are common and can be easily treated with Benadryl.

Beware of dog heat exhaustion:
Initial symptoms include heavy panting, excessive drooling, lethargy and /or unsteadiness. If you suspect heat exhaustion, take your dog's temperature with a rectal thermometer. Normal dog temperature is 100-102.5 degrees. Anything above this is a fever and you should put your pet in a cool area, hose them down with cool water or place in a cool water bath. If your dog's temperature reaches 103-106 degrees, see your veterinarian immediately.
