very important lens every pet owner should read
  • Sky-lab May 24, 2012 @ 1:41 am | delete
Very informative. I just started to use a plastic crate because I was worried about what would happen if I had a car crash.
  • Tony stemberger May 19, 2012 @ 8:44 am | delete
Jeez, after watching that first video, with the dog crashing into the window; I think it's time I get my dogs off my lap, out of the front seat and use the restraints I bought years ago.......

Good one... Thanks for this safety lens
  • AlphaChic Apr 20, 2012 @ 11:33 am | delete
Hi five to you! This is a great lens with a very important message. Well thought out and very complete. I, too, was in a bad accident with my dog and because he was crated, the worst we suffered was a bad fright.
  • Pamela O'Saile Apr 18, 2012 @ 2:03 pm | delete
I attached a large card laminated with the names and phone numbers of several dog friends that I new could come get my dogs if I were in an accident on the crate I keep in the car. I also leave a leash on my dog while they are in the crate I have one dog that is very freaky and would be hard to catch and might make it easier for someone to nab him if he got out after an accident. Hope an accident does not happen but better safe than sorry.
  • JohannTheDog Apr 18, 2012 @ 4:43 pm | delete
    Great tips Pamela!
  • PuppiesUnleashed Apr 17, 2012 @ 5:16 pm | delete
Having your dog in a proper carrier is good advice. It's not always easy or practical but you should do it. If you can't do that then a pet barrier is another good option.
  • jholland Apr 16, 2012 @ 3:26 am | delete
Great information. My Husky-Shepherd mix traveled through more than 30 states with me in the 10 years after she came home from a shelter. She was a perfect traveling companion - but I learned after the first long trip to secure her in the car. At a gas station hundreds of miles from home, she bolted from the car before I could get her leash. Watching her play chicken with oncoming traffic was not my idea of fun and she was safely restrained after that.
  • JohannTheDog Apr 18, 2012 @ 4:44 pm | delete
That is just toooo scary! Glad she is safe!
  • DarleneN Apr 15, 2012 @ 6:21 pm | delete
Wow, great lens. This is something most pet owners never think about. My husband stopped to help at an accident scene once; the man who was in the car was injured, and his two dogs had run off, terrified. He did get them back the next day, though, and they were OK. Wish they had been restrained!
  • bloomingrose Apr 15, 2012 @ 5:33 pm | delete

This simply shows how the owner loved his pets, animals are like humans who must be care, they have a feelings who need love. I like this lens, thank you for this information, I will buy like this to my car, for the safety of my pets.

I travel with a cat, and she rides with a harness and a soft carrier. I think that small dog booster might be fun for her in combination with a proper-fit travel harness. Must research this topic for kitties!

That's pawsome about your kitty! Good for her and you!

An awesome Lens. As the owner of a Golden retriever, I can tell you that it is not fun or safe to travel in the car with an unrestrained dog. I recommend that everybody at least think about ways to stay safe when traveling with a pet.
  • getfiredup Apr 10, 2012 @ 12:06 pm | delete
Great lens! A good dog owner looks out for their pooch just as they would a smile child, when they do there will be many doggie kisses to enjoy.

This is an excellent lens, and very important. We had a friend who was recently in a car wreck. All the people were okay, but the cocker spaniel who was sitting in the front seat had his back broken with the impact of the air bag. We always have our dog sit in the back but I have started to look at some of crates after reading your lens.
  • JohannTheDog Apr 9, 2012 @ 11:18 pm | delete
Oh no! That is so sad.....So glad you are looking into crates or a way to secure your pup!

This is something that never crosses most peoples minds. It's very important to restrain your dog in your car! Great lens, very helpful!
  • intermarks Apr 9, 2012 @ 5:29 am | delete
Wonderful! Many people never though for their pet safety when traveling with vehicle, they will just let their dog freely on the seat. This lens really give a very good idea for people who frequently travel with pets.

Great lens! I have a dog named sammi. I used to bring her on a trip to my mom's house and most of the time I use a seat belt. By reading your lens, it gives me an idea what to use for car safety on dogs.
  • jessy-simmons Mar 28, 2012 @ 3:24 pm | delete
Great lens! Very helpful for people looking to learn more about it. Defnitely better and more extensive than the wikipedia-page about it ;). Anyway, I have a lense about the same subject; dog car seats. Shall we link to each other to make stuff easier to find for people?
  • infiniti99 Mar 20, 2012 @ 10:06 am | delete
I have a enormous Labrador Retriever named Finnigann and I strap him into my truck but it's a lot harder considering he takes up the back seat all 150lbs of him.He loves to ride with me and does it often benn considering buying a 4 door F-250 ANY OTHER IDEAS.
  • JohannTheDog Mar 20, 2012 @ 10:21 am | delete
Wow, 150 lbs, that's a big boy :) I can tell you what we did, when we looked a new car. We took our crates to the dealership to see what cars they would fit in, before we decided on our final purchase. Maybe you could take him and see if he fits well in whatever vehicle your looking at? A good car seat belt would be good too! Good luck!
  • BiminiBahamas Mar 14, 2012 @ 9:50 am | delete
Houdini, my Maltese is always bagged and tagged when we ride in the car. Actually, he has his own car seat that allows him to look out the window, but it also is clipped to the seatbelt so he is restrained. So much for sticking his head out to catch a breeze!
  • fuelfixeruk Mar 10, 2012 @ 7:40 pm | delete
my mother in law has these in the trunk of her car. I always thought she was a little crazy, but reading this i see the importance of protecting your pets while driving. And to be honest, the puppies enjoyed it.

  • bames24 Nov 15, 2011 @ 3:30 am | delete
I had no clue about restraints... I normally use their leash inside the car to keep them secure in the back seat. And I never roll-down the windows in the back of the car. I even keep the child-lock on. I get so afraid that they might get hurt if they see something that excites them on the road. Thanks for the information about restraints... I will definitely look for them.

A great topic and one well overdue. As a dog walker, I insist that all dogs that I pick up have a harness and are secured by metal chain link from their harness to a car restraint point. It doesnt take long and can really save lives. Thank you for the info!
  • tuliprose Sep 28, 2011 @ 7:58 am | delete
Great information. I'm always shocked that every year dogs die because they have been left in hot cars without an open window. So, making people aware of dog safety is always needed.

I have had a dog open a zipper on a canvas kennel, and I have had a dog undo a seat belt that was attached to a special harness. You can try, but dogs can get out of most devices.

I love your lens. The pet safety kit is a great idea. I've often wondered what would happen to my dogs if I were hauled away in an ambulance.

I, too, had a bad car accident when one of my dogs was with me. If he hadn't been in his crate, I think there is a good chance he would have been hurt.

Lots of good info and ideas.

  • Archie_Right Dec 3, 2010 @ 6:45 am | delete
I'd also add that people shouldn't allow dogs to stick their heads out of the window (many dogs love to do that) since they have very high risk of getting eye damage by dust of bugs or other flying objects.

I'm going to get a car safety harness for my Sassy. We've been driving together a lot lately, and I do worry about her safety. And it's not good that I often keep one hand on her collar and one on the wheel, so I've been thinking about getting something other than confining her in a crate, which I've never done.
