Buckle Dog Collars
Buckle dog collars are pretty much just what they sound like. A collar that is fastened with a buckle. They are typically made from leather, vinyl, cotton, nylon, and can be flat or rolled. Buckle collars are adjustable for size but once on a dog's neck they do not adjust once fastened. The benefit of a rolled collar is that it does not break the hair the way a flat collar does on a dogs neck. The collar in the image is a round buckle collar. If you look closely you will see how the edges are rounded instead of laying flat.

Quick Release Dog Collar
Quick release collars come with a plastic closure. The two plastic pieces fit together in a snap and can easily be released quickly by pressing on the plastic parts with your fingers. Hence the name "quick release". The closure is similar to that which you can find on some luggage fasteners. Quick release collars are usually adjustable. They are not recommended for tie-outs.Quick release collars are generally made from cotton or nylon and are flat.

Martingale Dog Collar
A martingale dog collar is a specialized dog collar that was created to keep a dog from slipping out of the collar. They were designed for the site hounds with small heads like greyhounds, whipptes etc.
It is a two-loop-design You slip it directly over your dog's head. You attach the lead to the smaller loop which is designed to tighten down the larger loop when more restraint and control is needed.
Dog trainers recommend the martingale because of the added benefit of control it provides.

The Pinch Collar
The pinch collar to most will look very barbaric and to most animal lovers appears to be an instrument of torture. However, the pinch colar can be and is a very useful training tool if used properly. The idea of a pinch coar is not to inflict torture but to temporarily "pinch" the dog's neck much like a mother dog does with her mouth around the your pup's neck. This tells the young pup that mom is displeased with his/her behaviour and does not approve.
The pinch collar when used correctly is much more humane than it looks.
The pinch collar is a martingale type of collar. Martingale collars and pinch collars have the same loop design. However, the pinch collar is probably more suitable to train a larger dog because of their sheer power and strength.
Used correctly the pinch collar will not damage the muscles of the neck. I merely delivers more stimulus with less force so it is more effective for small or weak handlers with large untrained dogs who are a bit out of control.
To use it as a martingale and not a pinch collar merely turn the collar inside out to eleminate the pinch effect. Some people wrap them in a bandana so they do not look so bad.
The pinch collar is a very useful collar for large dogs if used properly.

Getting The Right Size
Sizing your dog for his/her new collar
Getting the correct collar for your pet can be a problem. Too loose and the dog will slip out. Too tight and it will make the dog uncomfortable. An easy way to mesure your pet for the correct size:
Take a piece of string you can also use a soft tape measure) and wrap it around the dogs neck keeping your finger where the loop meets. Measure the string and add two inches. This is the size you need to purchase for your pet. Most collars go in two inch increments. For example "12", "14", "16", "18", "20" and so on. In even sizes If your measurement is an odd number "13", "15" and so on get the next size up. It is alwaays better to be a little loose rather than too tight.
I think one mistake people make is that they measue for the collar at the base of the neck. Remember that the collar should be measured high up because the purpose of a collar is to keep the dog restrained when walking etc. If the collar is at the base of the neck and the dog pulls to get out it may be very easy for him to slip the collar over his neck depending on the size of his head.

Elizabethan Dog Collar
I have items you might like on iOffer, check it out if you have the timeThis dog collar is generally used by vets when a dog has been treated and needs to leave a particular area of his body alone and not be licked or nibbled at with his teeth.
However, I was able to find a great use for my collar when my poor beagle lost her eye. She was forever getting out of the yard. I now slip it on her neck when I let her out so she does not get out of the yard. It has worked great. She is completely used to it!
