Dog costumes to pamper your pooch

Think of a dog as mans best friend. Think again.

They are more like a child than a pet. The fact is some pets love to dress up and party just as much as people. Dog costumes come in all sorts of shapes and sizes so why dress up your pooch and while you're at it grab a matching theme costume for yourself.

4 dog costume factors to make your dog look cool and stay safe

Things to look for when considering dog costumes or clothes

Getting your dog a costume for parties or Halloween is so much fun but there are a few factors you need to be aware of in order to keep them safe whilst having fun.

1. Safety and comfort for your dog is most important. The costume should be a snug fit so that paws and mouths do not get stuck where they should not.

2. Ease of use. In case of injury how quickly will it be for you to get the costume off. Also it makes for less stress for both you and your dog if you are able to put on and take if off quickly.

3. Never leave your dog alone when in a costume. The dog may run around to play or get bored - resulting in the costume being destroyed or being caught on fences, outdoor furniture or other unsuspecting corners and potentially harming your pet. At times dogs have been known to ingest small parts of their costumes.

4. Tight elastics may get lost in pet hair thus being overlooked. However pain and swelling in the area of the elastic is quite likely to be the end result.

The dog costume debate

To wear or not to wear a dog costume

There has been an enormous increase in the number of pet costumes during Halloween as well as other occasions such as a dog fancy dress party. With it has also come an increase in questions being asked about whether costumes or clothes are appropriate. Are they safe? Could your pet get tangled or ingest part of the costume?

While costumes are used for a fun time and because owners like to pamper or shower their dogs with love and accessories - it is also important to take their well being and safety into consideration. For example an arthritic dog needs to be able to lay down comfortably and not have much difficulty while going up and down stairs. Young and old dogs will be more susceptible to excessive warmth as a result of some materials used in making costumes.

There are cases where clothes costumes are a necessity. For example on boat. Not all dogs are good swimmers. Having a life jacket could make the difference between your pet drowning or living. Should you dog encounter choppy waters or strong currents again a life jacket would come in handy.

Cold weather or winter could also require your dog to be rugged up with a dog coat. So not all costumes or clothes are made for fun and you need to consider a few factors when selecting the right outfit for your dog.

How do you feel about dressing your pet in a dog costume

Some people like including their pets in the holiday spirit with accessories or dog costumes. Some believe is an indulgence and a waste of time, while yet others believe it humiliates the pet. Whats your opinion on this?
