WHY SHOULD A DOG WEAR DESIGNER COUTURE DOG CLOTHING?

There are three reasons: Attention, Warmth, and Pride.

ATTENTION: No one knows better than an owner how much your pet loves attention. Cute T-Shirts catch peoples eyes. They stop and pay attention to your small dog who love it. They are friendlier when they get attention and they are happier pets. When you have your pet dressed up in Designer Signature Couture Dog Clothing, and go for a walk, it is amazing how many people you meet and how many new friends you can make. Something as simple as a Dog T-Shirt gets attention. Also, if you really want attention, try a Mink Coat, or a Mink Laminated Sweater or even Designer Couture.

WARMTH: Big and small, pups and little dogs get cold. That's why they like to lay in the sun and be outside on sunny days. That's why your puppy like to cuddle up next to you. Designer Couture Dog Clothes are designed for warmth, or show, or both!

PRIDE: An owner takes pride in showing off their pet. Just try dressing up yourself, and dress up your pet, and go for a stroll. Maybe even take your Pet Accessory Stroller . You will feel much better and so will your dog! It's not just the exercise that you both get, but the feeling of pride and the attention you get will develop a friendlier personality in both of you.

Designer Dog Clothing is all of the above, offering high fashion, one-of-a-kind or custom clothes for your pet.

Designer Dog Clothing is all of the above, offering high fashion, one-of-a-kind or custom clothes for your pet. The difference between Couture and Casual Dog Clothing is often the type of fabric and design, with both considered as Designer Dog Clothing. Planning Your Pet's Party Not too 'Ruff'!

Have A Barkingingly Good Time With Your Dogs and Friends!

UPDATED: 4:48 pm EDT October 9, 2008

A lady we know admits that her Yorkshire Terrier, King Solomon, is very spoiled!

"Solomon," his name is my baby, my first born," she announces.

Viewing pets as no less than children children is a rapidly expanding phenomenon that is spreading amongst pet owners worldwide. An overview of these findings of the latest pet owners' survey was revealed at the recent Global Pet Expo held in Orlando, Florida.

More pet owners are showing their love and affection toward their animals by buying gifts, throwing sometimes lavish parties and even having them partake in world travel!.

Are Pets Like Kids?

Press reports from Bob Vetere, President of the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association (APPMA), said the phenomenon of showing pets more affection includes scheduling play dates, spa visits, birthday parties and weddings, as well as giving gifts has now become "big business.".

in a survey by the APPMA, dog owners were found, to be much more inclined to buy a gift for their dog's birthday than even for themselves -- or their children.

Vetere said many pet owners have a strong emotional connection to their pets, and as the amount of money spent increases, it is projected to become a $50 billion industry by the end of the decade.

Pet Party Popularity

Additionally, the APPMA survey results confirm that 6 percent of dog owners and 3 percent of cat owners have held a holiday or birthday party for their pet.

Our friend falls into that category! For King Solomon's first birthday, he had a party at an area boutique for dogs.

In addition to renting the boutique, she gave goodie bags to the 10 dog guests and provided birthday cakes for both dogs and humans.

As an event-planning planner for her firm in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, she thought about all the small details. Each dog had a personalized birthday hat, and Solomon wore a blue birthday crown and a blue and white T-shirt that read, "I'm the Birthday Boy."

Felder said she also asked the boutique's owner to plan dog-themed games, such as word searches, so the owners would have fun as well.

Buying Gifts, Dog Accessories

Our party planner did not spare any expense when planning Solomon's party and , like many other indulgent pet owners, usually does hold back not when making purchases for him. It started at an early age for Solomon, when he was about 6 months old, She bought a fashionable Juicy Couture bag from Nordstrom so that he could be carried in style.

"His Juicy Couture carrier was $400," she said. "I was just doing my taxes and came across all the receipts for him and said to myself, 'Are you crazy?'"

Crazy or not, she cannot imagine treating Solomon any differently.

"Hopefully, I will get a lot of the need-to-spoil out of my system on him, so that when he gets human brothers and sisters, I won't be as bad," she said.

Like Solomon and many other four-legged pets, he is loved in many ways.

"I talk to him, play with him, discipline him when needed, and I pray for him," she said. "I had him blessed. He has a Godfather, and he has a sizable amount of my life insurance policy."

Unquestionably for his owner, Solomon is worth every penny that is spent on him.

"They say dogs are every man's best friend, and truly that is what Solomon has been to me," she said. "He has been such a blessing. He has often been just what I needed to see when I have not-so-good days or just feel like throwing in the towel."

Pet Party Plans:

Not sure what you need to plan and throw a great pet party? Here are the basic essentials:
First, figure out how many furry friends you want in attendance. Too many dogs can lead to fights if the space isn't adequate.
Next, secure a location. Whether it's at your home or a park or some other venue, make sure there's enough room for guests to run and play.
Plan and send invites, make sure to invite both pets and their owners.
Make sure to have two menus, one for pets and one for people. Check out local pet bakeries for delicious doggy treats that look like cupcakes, cookies and other treats.
Organize games and activities so that all your guests can join in
Decorate! Simple decorations are best; make sure they are non-toxic and safe for pets. Balloons are okay, but opt for non-latex balloons, for pets' sake.
Make neat, thoughful, gift bags for your guests. Examples of treats could include toys, doggie snacks or even hats, tees or "Doggles" for cool canines.
Above all, have fun!

Here Comes The Dog Bride And Groom

Stacey, a mother of two -- two humans and a dog, is clear about Lola, a 2-year-old Maltese, being part of the family. She has birthday parties and has many articles of clothing -- even her own wardrobe with satin clothes hangers.

"We treat Lola just like we treat everybody else in the family," she said.

When Stacey first suggested letting Lola mate with another Maltese, named Harley, her human children, who are 11 and 15, suggested that their brother get married first.

The wedding, which is currently being planned, will likely be held outdoors at a local "dog-friendly" park within the next few months. The wedding will be complete with flowers, a runner and sheer curtains all over. Harley will don a black tuxedo and red bow tie, while his bride will wear a white couture gown with train and veil.

There also has been discussion among family members on what type of gift Harley should give Lola. So far, family members have suggested a rhinestone tiara or rhinestone collar.

Our hostess--to-be says there will also be appetizers that both humans and dogs can eat. But dogs for dogs and human for human!

"I see it like an adult wedding," she said. "I expect humans to be dressed appropriately."

Barron's Le Doggie Boutique in Pompano Beach Florida has all the necessities for such an event! There is a wide selection of bridal dresses, groom attire suited to all price ranges as well as items for best dogman, groom's "dogman" and ring bearers, plus "off the rack" style and designer couture, in pastel colors, for the remainder of the bridal party and guests alike.

In addition, Barron's Le Doggie Boutique and Barron's website both carry a wide selection of gifts for birthday and other special WOOF WOOF holidays. Casual Birthday t-shirts and more formal wear are also featured. Need black patent leather "Mary Jane" shoes for that special day??? Barron's has a great selection of these too!

The iconic "CVC" is unmistakably the signature of Chien Vivant Couture.

It was January 2009, a late Tuesday evening, when my son, Tom, appeared at my door with a black cocker spaniel. He looked at me and said, "This is for you mom." I was so surprised, I never have had a dog before. To make me feel good, my son told me, "this is the same dog that Oprah has." I then decided to name my chien "Koko". My first thought was great he is black and fits perfectly with my home decor, but then my second question, and natural thought, for my son was, where will Koko sleep? Immediately I started searching for dog beds that would fit with my home and decor. Needless to say I was not able to find a bed that could fit with my decor or design. My son then told me, "why don't you design Koko a glamorous bed like you always design for your clients" using the luxurious fabrics, colors, and textures that my clients always love so much. The rest as we all say is history. The result, Chien Vivant Couture was born.

Please use the chest measurement for the most accurate measurement when purchasing our tees. If your dog is on the high end of a size, please go up to the next size especially if their total body length is measuring at the next size. For example a dog with a chest measurement of 19" and a total body length of 13" will need to order a size L rather than a size M.

The length of our tanks are approximately 3/4 of the total length of your dog (measured from the collar to the base of the tail). For example, size S will fit most dogs with a body length of 10" but the length of the tee will be 7"-8". All tanks are cut shorter in the front to help in preventing accidents with male dogs.

Our tanks are made of a baby rib knit and designed for a tighter fit. If your dog has a lot of hair, you may want to order the next size larger. Often dogs will wear two different sizes of tees depending on their hair cut.

*Please note: Size Shown is Large. On smaller sizes the design has to be adjusted due to the size of the tank top.

Pet fashion all the rage as owners bark, What recession?

NEW YORK (AFP) -It's definately a dog's life during hard economic times! But Chihuahuas in a tutu? Pugs in designer tank-tops? Dachshunds draped in Swarovski bling? It's all part of the trend.

This was the scene at the third annual Pet Fashion Week in Manhattan held recently, where despite a ongoing US recession, the world's dog-loving fashionistas gathered to share ideas, market their products, strut a canine catwalk and raise money for charity.

At a time when department stores are suffering from shrinking sales of clothing, shoes and accessories such as handbags, those in the pet fashion industry are thriving, thanks to dog-loving elites and the desire of millions of other pet owners to pamper their pooches.

"I've always loved dressing up dolls and Barbies, and I wanted to take it into something else that I loved, and I love pets," pet-fashion designer Kameron Westcott from Dallas, Texas told AFP as her five-year-old Yorkshire terrier, Louis, peeked out of a canine carry bag designed by luxury fashion giant Louis Vuitton.

"Dogs need to be cute when they go to parties as well," quipped Westcott, who runs an Internet web site hawking a range of Brazilian-made clothes and accessories for dogs.

"They want to feel elite and posh, just like we are."

These dogs were really having their day. All five floors of the exhibition center in lower Manhattan were crammed with dozens of stands marketing an unbelievable range of pet beauty products, clothes accessories and services.

Palacial doghouses on display stood covered in lush drapes, filled with cushions bearing Swarovski jewels (price: 9,000 to 15,000 dollars) and other jewelry; while other vendors were peddling the "must-haves" of the moment: all things environmentally friendly and recyclable.

Newly-popular green items ranged from cardigans knitted out of Andean Alpaca wool to a line of bamboo-only products by "Pet Duti," a brand which offers items aimed at easing the unfashionable modern-day necessity of cleaning up after one's dog outside.

Pet Fashion Week proved to be a runaway success, although one woman was disappointed. "You can't stop me, I want my money back," shrieked a lady on the verge of a meltdown after having been barred from one of the events Saturday morning for having the wrong ticket.

"No, you paid for the evening charity show. This one is for buyers, designers and the media," a hostess responded, unruffled.

The show's stars came out amid an elaborate and ominous backdrop of oil drums and abandoned jerricans meant to evoke the "scary situation" reflected by today's energy crisis, according to organizers.

Bulldogs paraded the runway wearing tight wool knits, elegant Afghans sauntered by clad in "Hermes", all led by human fashion models as sumptuously outfitted as their four-legged friends.

Chihuahuas skittered about in tutus, and a trio of tank-top-wearing pugs were pushed down the makeshift catwalk in a shopping cart.

Swedish designer Tania Fylking, seeking a new outlet for her flair for fashion, made the trip to New York at the suggestion of a friend.

"I flew from Stockholm and I do not regret it, I hope to find an agent for my brand," said Fylking, who specializes in producing exotic leather goods favored by several Hollywood celebrities for their pets.

According to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association (APPMA), 63 percent of American homes -- some 71 million households -- have pets. They include 88 million cats, 75 million dogs, 142 million goldfish and 13 million reptiles.

Spending on pets rose in 2007 to 40 billion dollars, compared with 28.5 billion in 2001, including 17 billion spent on food, 11 billion on veterinary care, 10 billion dollars on medicines and 3.9 billion on pet toys, clothing and "dog-sitters."

On its website, the association says doctors claim that "pets help to lower blood pressure, reduce stress, and prevent heart disease, that lower healthcare costs and fight depression and loneliness."

CARE ABOUT THE HEALTH & SAFETY OF YOUR PETS!

WATCH OUT FOR THE SUMMER SUN!

According to Dr. Rob Sharp of Hillsboro, Ohio%u2026. Short-haired breeds, dogs with light-colored coats or bare patches, and puppies with delicate skin are most susceptible to burning. This doesn't mean you can't go to the beach, just that you should take the same care with your dog as you would with any child.

So avoid the sun during the hottest part of the day - between 11 A.M. and 3 P.M. - and consider getting your pup a dog tee for protection. Slather nontoxic SPF 30 sunscreen on his ears and muzzle - those areas burn first since the skin is delicate and doesn't have much hair.

You can buy a spray made especially for pets, or just use a sunblock for babies, as long as it's free of zinc oxide, which can be harmful to dogs. And don't forget the bare spot on his tummy; sunshine reflects off hot sand and concrete and can burn his undercarriage.

Finally, light-colored dogs can occasionally develop carcinoma on the ear tips. This isn't common, but taking precautions now beats dealing with skin cancer later.

Meet the Breeds

October 17th and 18th, 2009 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center New York, New York

New York, NY - The American Kennel Club® (AKC®), in conjunction with the Cat Fanciers' Association® (CFA®), is pleased to announce that "Meet the Breeds" will take place on Saturday and Sunday, October 17th and 18th, 2009 at New York City's Javits Convention Center. Sponsored by PetPartners, Inc. a leading pet healthcare provider, Meet the Breeds is a showcase of over 160 AKC registered dog breeds and 41 CFA registered cat breeds and will be the first stand-alone event of its kind in the world.

AKC Meet the Breeds has been held at every AKC/Eukanuba National Championship show since its inception in 2001, drawing thousands of spectators to the colorful and creatively decorated booths showcasing each AKC registered breed. The booths, created by each breed's national club, are individually decorated to depict the breed's country of origin, historical purpose or function, and attributes as a family pet. Responsible breeders and their dogs, puppies, cats and kittens will interact with the public to educate them on various breeds and responsible pet ownership.

"Because of the overwhelming popularity of this feature at our past shows and the tremendous participation of our Parent Clubs, we have decided to create a stand-alone event geared 100% toward pet lovers. Bringing the internationally respected CFA in adds a new dimension and will allow event goers to experience every breed of dog and cat in the U.S. together under one roof," said Dennis Sprung, AKC President and CEO. "It's an ideal opportunity for any animal lover to enjoy the diversity and beauty in the canine and feline worlds and learn about breeds directly from the experts. We will offer attractions such as educational demonstrations, vendors and activities for kids and we expect it to become an annual family event."

"We are so pleased to be joining the AKC for this event," said Pam DelaBar, President of the CFA. "As many pet owners know, cats and dogs are part of the family. This showcase will allow people to explore more about pedigreed cats and consider what breed will fit in to their lives."

"As one of the leading providers of pet healthcare insurance, PetPartners is delighted to be the top sponsor of this exceptional event that will help families learn more about responsible pet ownership and how to ensure their pets live long and healthy lives," said Steve Popovich, CEO of PetPartners.

Demonstrations will include various activities such as dog and cat grooming, Agility (dogs and cats), AKC Canine Good Citizen® Testing, K-9 Search and Rescue and First Aid for dogs and cats.

About The Animal Rescur Site!

The Animal Rescue Site focuses the power of the Internet on a specific need - providing food for some of the 27 million unwanted animals given to shelters in the U.S. every year. Over 10 million animals are put to death every year in the U.S. alone because they are abandoned and unwanted.

About the owners of The Animal Rescue Site

The Animal Rescue Site is owned and operated by Tim Kunin and Greg Hesterberg, co-owners of CharityUSA.com (parent company of GreaterGood Network). Long-time friends and activists, they met at the University of Michigan while working on the Michigan Bottle Bill ballot campaign in 1976. In the late 1990s, they recognized that broad consumer-adoption of the Internet offered a new opportunity to raise funds for good causes. As enthusiastic supporters of The Hunger Site, they realized the power of providing busy Internet users with a fast, free and easy way to make a difference and launched EcologyFund.com to give people the means to support wilderness preservation efforts worldwide. They launched The Animal Rescue Site in July 2002.

BARRON SAYS,"THIS IS A GREAT ARTICLE ON OUR "SIGNATURE COUTURE DOG CLOTHING" DESIGNER FROM RHODE ISLAND, EMMA ROSE DESIGN

Pooch Couture Dog Couture fashion designs for the discerning furshionista by Nicole Feliciano (Highlights Taken from the Original Article)

Carolina Herrera, Donna Karan, Stella McCartney. These are typically the female designers we think of when conjuring up visions of jaw-dropping gowns. Add a new name to the list: Carol Blanchette the creative force in dog couture. But this designer isn't dressing Angelina or Penelope or Jen for a night at the Oscars. Instead, Blanchette caters to the doggie elite.

Sewing appears to be in Blanchette's blood. She learned the craft from her mother and in turn taught her own daughter to sew. Over the years, her sewing machine has rarely stopped. That is until 1995 when Blanchette took a self-imposed hiatus from needle and thread.

Retirement didn't sit well with Blanchette. She quickly bored with life away from fabric and fashion. Thankfully, Emma, her beloved poodle served as a source of inspiration. One winter when Blanchette thought Emma looked cold, the seamstress set about sewing her dog a spiffy coat.

What started out as a small functional project, soon took on a life of its own. "The dog clothes sort of snowballed," says Blanchette. Her daughter, Sherry Raposa, got into the act and Raposa's dog, Rosie, began to dress like a starlet too. When the dogs and owners went out on excursions they attracted plenty of attention. As interest in the doggie designs grew, Blanchette and daughter began to take commissions.

What exactly does "doggie couture" mean? Most dog clothes are readymade at a large sewing factory. Unlike these mass-produced garments, couture designs are cut, pieced and sewn by hand. According to Blanchette, these dresses and coats are made to specific measurements to fit a particular dog with style and panache.

Headquartered far from the hustle and bustle of New York City's fashion district, all the work is done in Blanchette's 1800-square-foot Rhode Island home. There aren't any forms or patterns in the studio - just sewing machines and yards and yards of fabric. Since Blanchette and her daughter don't use patterns, basic sewing can take days. On average each custom piece requires two days of work. Despite the time investment, Blanchette refuses to outsource any of her garments' production.

As Blanchette tells it, fabric is crucial in the construction of the collections. Blanchette says she moves around the fabric and touches it - then the inspiration comes. To find the best materials, Blanchette and her daughter scour New England estate sales hunting for vintage treasures (the duo vow never to order from overseas).

The designer turns up her nose at the fashions found in large-box retailers where most of the clothes are mass-produced in China. In addition to fine fabric, Blanchette believes in sweating the details.

For the more intricate work, such as beading, Blanchette uses a large magnifier. With thread in hand, she'll work for an hour at a time, hand knotting each crystal Swarovski bead onto a wedding gown.

Blanchette seems to have an infinite store of ideas. There are more than 300 items in the collection and new ideas pop up every day. Special requests are greeted with a can-do attitude. They've matched up wedding gowns for human brides who want their fur families involved in wedding ceremonies, from simple to elaborate.

Blanchette says she is delighted to work with owners on dreaming up canine wedding attire in tulle, silk and organza, such as the Candlelight Dog Bridal Gown fashioned from English netting and featuring a removable train.

From a $20 casual chic dog harness to a $12,000 one-of-a kind gown, purchasing a couture design means an investment in quality and an acknowledgement that dressing your dog should be fun and fantastic. As Blanchette says, "Our designs set you and your pooch apart from the masses."

Still despite all the effort she puts into her work, Blanchette remains slightly amazed by the demand for her creations, "This is the craziest thing I've ever done... now I'm starting to think it's normal for dogs to wear a $500 dress."

THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF OWNING A PET!

HEALTH BENEFITS

The American Pet Product Association quoted several resources on their website in demonstrating the ways pets improve people's health!

Pets Help to Lower Blood Pressure. A recent study at the State University of New York at Buffalo found that people with hypertension who adopted a cat or dog had lower blood pressure readings in stressful situations than did those who did not own a pet. (Dr. Karen Allen, State University of New York at Buffalo)

Pets Help to Reduce Stress Walking. with a pet helps to sooth nerves and offers instant relaxation. Studies conducted worldwide have shown that the impact of a stressful situation is lesser on pet owners, especially males, than on those who do not own a pet. (Josephine M. Wills, Waltham Centre for Pet Nutrition, United Kingdom)

Pets Help to Prevent Heart Disease. Because pets provide people with faithful companionship, research shows they may also provide their owners with greater psychological stability, thus a measure of protection from heart disease. (National Institute of Health Technology Assessment Workshop: Health Benefits of Pets)

Pets Help to Lower Health Care Costs. People with pets actually make fewer doctor visits, especially for non-serious medical conditions. (National Institute of Health Technology Assessment Workshop: Health Benefits of Pets)

Pets Help to Fight Depression Pets help fight depression and loneliness, promoting an interest in life. When seniors face adversity or trauma, affection from pets takes on great meaning. Their bonding behavior can foster a sense of security. (Between Pets and People: The Importance of Animal Companionship)

The top 10 dogs of the year 2008 in the USA according to the American Kennel Club!

And see who is the winner!

This past year, thousands of people narrowed down their search for the breed best suited for their personal lifestyle. Even our President, Barack Obama, got into the act! The American Kennel Club (AKC), the not-for-profit organization that maintains the largest registry of purebred dogs in the world, sorted through 157 breeds to create the most popular dogs of 2008. This list contains large and small dogs, "old favorites" and new entrants alike!

And the 2008 Winner is,.. "drum roll please," .. the Labrador Retriever!
Gentle, intelligent and family-friendly the Labrador retriever is named the most popular breed, in the United States, for the 18th consecutive year! This statistic is confirmed according to American Kennel Club registration records. Because of his aptitude to please, the Labrador Retriever excels as guide dogs for the blind, as part of search-and-rescue teams, and in narcotics detection with law enforcement.

This versatile breed comes in three colors - yellow, black and chocolate - and as a double-coated breed that sheds seasonally. Regular grooming keeps their coat at its water-resistant best. An ideal sporting and family dog, the Labrador retriever thrives as part of an active family or as a trusted hunting companion.

In descending order as ranked by the American Kennel Club, here are the others who round out the 2008 "Top Ten Breeds."

#10: Shih Tzu
A compact and solid dog, the Shih Tzu's with its long, flowing double coat is distinctive. Shih Tzu translates to "lion" and although this dog is sweet and playful, and he is not afraid to stand up for himself! Since their sole purpose is as a companion and house pet, they should be lively, alert, friendly and trusting. Optimally, weighing between 9 and 16 pounds, they require minimal exercise, but the long, luxurious coat needs daily brushing and maintenance.

#9: Poodle
Though often considered a "high maintenance" dog due to its coat; it is actually one of the high achievers of the canine world and is immensely popular at dog shows around the world, including the prestigious Westminster and Crufts in the United Kingdom! The breed is exceptionally smart, hardy and excels in obedience training. The breed originated in Germany as a water retriever, and thus requires daily exercise. The stylish "poodle clip" seen in dog shows was designed by hunters to help the dogs move through the water more efficiently. The patches of hair left on the body are meant to protect vital organs and joints, which are susceptible to cold. Most pet poodles sport a simpler cut. Frequent grooming is required, regardless of the trim type. Poodles come a variety of solid colors, including white, black, apricot and gray - is also hypoallergenic, which may reduce allergic reactions. New colors are emerging such a the parti-color. Poodles are also now cross-bred with many other breeds to produce a wide array of non-AKC recognized sub-breeds.

#8: Bulldog
Known for their shuffling gait and massive and somewhat unattractive short-faced head, the bulldog is known to be equable, resolute and dignified. A medium-sized dog, they are not your typical lap dog, but would like to be!
Very popular due to their lovable and gentle dispositions and adorable wrinkles, the bulldog may be brindle, white, red, fawn, fallow or piebald. Bulldogs are recognized as excellent family pets because of their tendency to form strong bonds with children. They tend to be gentle and protective. The breed requires minimal grooming and exercise, but their short nose makes them prone to overheating in warm weather.

#7: Dachshund
The dachshund, its name means "badger dog" in German, is a lively breed with a friendly personality and keen sense of smell. Known for their long and low bodies, they are eager hunters that excel in both above- and below-ground work. The breed comes in three different coat varieties (smooth, wirehaired or longhaired) and can be miniature (11 pounds and under) or standard size (16-32 pounds).
Dachshunds are lovable, playful companions, and an ideal pet for many homes. They require moderate exercise, and can adapt to most living environments.

#6: Boxer
This well-conditioned mid-sized breed is considered the athlete of dogdom. The Boxer is a powerful dog with an intelligent and alert expression. While they are instinctive guardians, the Boxer loves to be with people. Their personality has allowed them to succeed as couriers during wartime and as seeing-eye dogs for the blind.
One of the breed's most notable characteristics is its desire for human affection, especially from children. They are patient and spirited with children, but also very protective, making them a popular choice for families. Fawn and brindle colors are true colors and the Boxer's short coat requires only minimal maintenance. This is an active dog that needs daily exercise.

#5: Beagle
Propelled by the win by "Uno" at the 2007 Westminster Dog show, the Beagle is a sturdy hunting dog, which should look like a foxhound in miniature. His easy-to-care-for coat, combined with a jolly personality makes the Beagle a favorite for many families. According to the AKC, today's Beagle comes in two height varieties (13 inch and 15 inch) and any true hound color, including tri-color, red and white and lemon. Beagles are happy-go-lucky and friendly. Since, for hundreds of years, they lived in packs they naturally enjoy the company of other dogs -- and humans, too. Curious and comedic, they can be mischievous if they are not provided with daily activity.

#4: Golden Retriever
With a trademark light to dark golden-colored coat, the Golden Retriever possesses great intelligence and a very eager-to-please attitude. Originally bred to retrieve game, the working ability has made the Golden Retriever not only a useful hunting companion but also an ideal service and search-and-rescue dog.
This breed is active and energetic and can adapt too many different living situations as long as he has plenty of daily exercise. His water-repellent double coat sheds seasonally and needs regular brushing. With his friendly temperament and striking golden color, this breed is both beautiful to look at and a joy to own.

#3: German Shepherd
The German shepherd dog is hailed worldwide as the leading police, guard and military dog. They have served the military well in international conflicts. However, this dependable breed is more than just a hard worker. It is also a loving family companion, herder and strong show competitor as seen at the Westminster Dog Show, year after year. The breed is approachable, direct and fearless, with a strong, muscular body, and can be most colors, except white. Energetic and fun-loving, this breed is a loyal family pet, a good guard dog and the ideal choice for many families. They do require regular exercise and grooming.

#2: Yorkshire Terrier
Yorkshire terriers are affectionately known as "Yorkies." Despite their small size, they offer larger than life personalities. Though members of the Toy Group, they are terriers by nature. Brave, determined, investigative and energetic they are also gentle and sweet. They have long, luxurious blue-and-tan coats that require regular brushing. This portable pooch is easily adaptable to all surroundings, travels well and makes a suitable pet for many homes and apartment living. Due to their small size (they weigh only 4 to 7 pounds), they require limited exercise, but need plenty of daily interaction with people.

Stump the Sussex spaniel named "BEST IN SHOW" at Westminster 2009!

Dog, 10, comes out of retirement to become the oldest winner ever at the Westminster Kennel Club show

NEW YORK - This old dog certainly taught the 2009 Westminster a new trick.
At 10, a Sussex spaniel named Stump became the oldest Best In Show winner at America's top canine competition, coming out of retirement last week, and taking the biggest canine prize this past Tuesday night.

A nearly capacity crowd in Madison Square Garden cheered loudly when Judge Sari Tietjen pointed to the new champion. Maybe the fans knew Stump's backstory, that he left the show ring in 2004 and later nearly died from a mysterious medical condition. Only the vets at Texas A&M saved him. The rest is, as they say, history!

With floppy ears and a slow rolling gait, the golden-red Stump beat out a magical final field. Sommer, his handler, guided him past a giant schnauzer, that too was the nation's top show dog, a much-favored Brussels griffon, a Scottish deerhound named "Tiger Woods," a standard poodle with an impressive 94 Best In Show wins, a Scottish terrier and a Puli.

After he won, a joyous Stump showed off his one trick - he danced on his hind legs - as if he was begging! He didn't have to, he was already TOP DOG, Number One.

Stump won the sporting group at Westminster in 2004, then headed into retirement. It was supposed to be easy but it was not! Soon after, he nearly wasted away and spent 19 days in the pet hospital suffering a mystery ailment.

2009 was the 133rd edition of Westminster and the dogs came in 170 breeds and varieties. Stump beat them all!
