How to Choose the Right Dog for You
There are several aspects to consider before acquiring a dog.The first thing to consider is whether you can afford to own a dog, if you cannot afford at least an extra $500 a year, please do not proceed - you will only make yourself and the dog unhappy.
If you can afford a dog, do not buy one just because your children have been begging. Ultimately the dog and its welfare would be your responsibility, if you do not think you could cope do not buy.
Dogs are not good impulse purchases. Please research the differences between the various breeds carefully beforehand, to establish which one is the best fit for your circumstances and lifestyle. If you are not sure where to start try a few online quizes like this one to help narrow your research.

Activities You Can Enjoy with Your Dog
A dog is the friend that you can always count on when things go wrong and no-one else seems to care - this is what makes a dog so much more than just a pet. In return for this unconditional affection you owe your dog more than just regular feeds and somewhere to live, it also requires maintenance to keep that dog strong and fit.Spending time with your four-legged pal further strengthens the relationship with your pet. It lets the dog know that their owner loves being together and by engaging in play or work; it strengthens the communication, comprehension and eventually respect between man and animal.
If you apply a little imagination, there are many ways to teach a dog discipline and new tricks through the use of games instead of the normal routine. This approach can prove fun for both the dog and the owner.
One game suitable for this purpose is called 'follow the leader', which is best conducted with a group of owners and their dogs. Markers such as cones or cans (or anything similar) are placed on the ground and then the group walks around the obstacles, the dogs learn to follow when called. By switching who the leader is and repeating the exercise over again, further behaviour strengthening may be achieved.
Another great game is a variation of hide and seek, most of us have played this as children with other children, but it may be played with a dog too. You teach your dog to stay in one place whilst you hide and then have the dog start to search for you when its name is called. This teaches the dog discipline and how to wait until summoned by its owner's voice.
One possible game modification is to hide a treat and to have the dog seek that out instead of a person. This has the added benefit of teaching the animal to use its powerful sense of smell to discover things and to receive a reward for it.
For the physically active taking your dog out for a jog first thing in the morning presents another excellent chance to spend time together. Serendipitously, it also gives the canine and the human a first-rate workout, which should serve to keep both in good health. Dogs love games and you can add a twist to the jogging by taking a Frisbee or stick with you, that the dog can then play fetch with when you throw it. This will help strengthen the limbs and also involve the dog in some thinking in order to successfully intercept the thrown object.
Hopefully this has given you some insight into how to spend quality time with your dog.

Training Your Dog to Obey You
Many people know that dogs are widely considered to be a man's best friend and therefore think that dogs are created with the desire to obey their masters. However, contrary to this opinion obedience is not a natural quality in dogs, it has to be created by human intervention. The only way a dog is going to know how to behave correctly is if they are educated to do so.The mechanism to achieve the aim of control is known as obedience training. If conducted properly, by the time your canine friend has completed their training they will firmly understand who the master is and who the follower is.
Obedience training varies enormously in style, the equipment used and on the principles being implemented. Nevertheless, whatever method is employed the end goal remains the same - making dogs obey their masters.
How do trainers of these concepts make the dogs obey their masters? How do you train a non-sentient being? As it turns out, there are only two key factors in training a dog to obey: compassion and consistency.
Compassion is necessary because a dog cannot immediately comprehend what is wrong and what is right. The training will need to be a process and will require patience on the part of the human teacher in order to gain the animal's trust.
Consistency is absolutely vital, as dogs cannot think logically they need to learn a pattern of behaviour. There can be no gray areas when training a dog, it needs to be entirely black and white and anything else simply confuses the dog and will ultimately result in frustration for the human.

Condition Your Dog's Behavior Using Clicker Training
If you are looking to train your dog you might consider using the 'clicker training' method, which has recently become popular amongst dog trainers all over the country. In this method the trainer has to make use of a clicker, a tiny plastic box with a metal button which makes a distinctive click sound once the button has been pressed. The training method is simple and is in many ways parallel to the positive training method. Here is what you have to do. Decide on a certain behavior which you want to teach or reinforce your dog to do. A number of behaviors/actions come naturally to the dog like sitting, eating, standing, barking etc. and these just need to be reinforced so that your dog knows when you want him to do what. Various other actions like acting dead, shaking hands, rolling over etc. do not come naturally to a dog and need to be taught. Clicker training can be used to do both.Clicker training works according to the basic principles of operant conditioning, by associating the sound of the clicker with a food item which the dog particularly likes. Now all you have to do is use the clicker to command the dog to do something, the dog, given that he associates the sound of the clicker with the food, immediately obliges and the training is complete.
Let us take an example to illustrate the method better, suppose you want to teach your dog to sit, you put a cookie on your dog's nose playfully and then move it upwards, the dog will obviously follow the movement of the biscuit with its nose and will then naturally rest its posterior on the floor, thereby putting himself in a sitting position. Now time your clicking to be so accurate as to occur right as the dog seats himself, now give him the biscuit and praise him. Continue doing this for sometime until the dog begins to associate the clicking with the receipt of food until the click makes him sit without you luring him with treats. Now teach him another behavior, but remember to attach the clicking cue only once the animal himself offers you the behavior otherwise the clicking will not be connected to anything in the dog's head and he will be confused regarding what it means.
Any kind of training is a strenuous and rigorous process and needs time and patience. Although the clicker training method has a high success rate it might not work for certain types of dogs, if you see that it is not working for your pet you would be well advised to use some other technique to teach it tricks.
