Aggression In Dogs...Is It Nature of Nurture?
Aggressive behaviors in dogs are natural and normal. Experts in dog behavior acknowledge that some types and breeds of dogs do show an inclination towards aggression, but they also agree this is NOT ONLY due to an interplay of genetics, but also due to the environment of the animal and the animal's upbringing including it's health and training.
The genetics of mean and agressive dogs are not completely understood by most experts...but we do know that centuries ago while in the wild, dogs needed to be aggressive to hunt, to shield themselves from other creatures, and to protect their food and sleeping quarters. Selective breeding over the decades has changed the nature of certain breeds drastically and minimized aggression in these breeds. Of all the animals we humans have domesticated, the dog is the only one who has has allowed itself to acknowledge the authority of humans without question. Our dogs depend on us for survival.
When matched with owners who deliberately abuse and neglect them, the ultimate result is a mean dog with aggressive dog behavior including aggression towards family members, strangers, and dog on dog aggression. Some owners even unintentionally encourage aggressive behavior through rough play such as tug of war or encouraging their dogs when they growl at strangers and other animals. Growling should never be encouraged or tolerated. A growling dog is always a threat and this type of behavior should never be tolerated.
The recent Michael Vick Dog Fighting scandal has brought much light to the fact that bad dogs can become good dogs with the proper dog behavior training, and I'd like you to visit further down this lens for more information on that and what has become of Michael Vick's dogs today (23 months and $1 million dollars was not enough punishment for this type of dog cruelty). This is a case where indeed the owners and organizers should have been prosecuted for manslaughter to take responsibility for the dangerous behavior of these dogs and for promoting dog on dog aggression and dog on dog fighting.
As dog lovers and companions, there is a lot we can do to prevent aggression through dog behavior training. There are many steps as "man's best friend" we can take to effectively recognize and deal with aggressive dog behavior efficiently.
SOCIALIZATION...SOCIALIZATION...SOCIALIZATION It cannot be stressed enough how important it is to introduce your dog to different places and people. Your dog relies 100% on you to broaden his/her horizons through consistent and positive experiences. With socialization you are teaching your pets that new experiences don't have to be scary experiences...and with lots of consistent socialization, aggressive dog behavior can lead to happy dogs that integrate well into society.
Spend lots of time with your dogs. Show them lots of love and affection and play with them. Love them as you would any other member of your family. They are looking to you for guidance and boundaries. Boundaries and rules make things clear to your dog, and frequent dog training and obedience work is essential to a happy and loving pet.
No matter what your dog's tolerance, it is your responsibility to keep him well socialized and property managed with proper dog behavior training and dog care. Good management is key and must be kept up for the life of your dog. There are many many dog behavior training tips to stop aggression in dogs including how to groom your dog, how to handle your dog, resourcing your dog, and on and on, more than I can mention in this one lens. The Michael Vick Story...Where His Dogs Are Now
BAD RAP and Other Animal Shelters Take Them In

This story has been passionately followed by many for the past year (almost?). On April 25, 2007, police and animal-control officers sized 66 dogs (53 of them pit bulls) owned by former NFL star Michael Vick. The dogs were used in illegal dog fighting. This cruel animal treatment occurs all over the country every day, but nobody would have ever known about these victimized dogs had they not been part of a fallen sports figures dog fighting ventures. Public opinion has fallen very much in favor of helping the dogs, and in a landmark animal welfare case, 49 of the dogs were relinquished to several rescue organizations, included
BAD RAP, to reach the goal of evaluating them and sending them to new and better lives. These types of dogs are typically referred to as "Kennel Trash" and put to their deaths due to the fact that they are dangerous dogs. After re-evaluating all of the dogs, the green light was given to release 16 of them to interim foster care homes so that they could begin healing. All are now living in volunteer foster homes with other pets, and some with children. They are receiving obedience training and learning house manners. Helping these dogs is as simple as giving them what they should have always had and what every dog deserves. On December 10, 2007, Michael Vick was sentenced to 23 months in jail and a $1 Million Dollar restitution to go towards the care and rehabilitation of these dogs (not enough in my opinion). The dogs made their television debut at the end of January 2008.
If you haven't already, you really should go to this website and read more about the Time-Lines of this incredible case and what has happened to the dogs.
BAD RAP stands for Bay Area Dog Lovers Responsible About Pit Bulls, and they took in many of the rescued Michael Vick dogs. Whether you are a Pit Bull lover or not, it really gets down to the humane treatment of all dogs and this story can't help but make you realize how we need to treat all pets humanely and recognize that animal behavior training is extremely important to our dogs.

Great Resource For Dealing with Aggressive Dog Behavior
(An Instant Downloadable e-book)
If you don't know where to go or who to turn to for proper advice on dog obedience training, check out the above book. It's fantastic!! I own a Sheltie...and our dog "Ace" previously exhibited lots of aggressive behaviors along with lots and lots and lots and lots of barking (he's a herding dog and barking and aggression were in his nature). After several years of frustration, we finally turned to this book and have been able to deal with and resolve "Ace's" problems with both barking and aggression towards people and other dogs. I highly recommend it! I wish we would have found this manual sooner and saved ourselves from years of using the wrong techniques to deal with Ace's bad and embarrassing behaviors. In my opinion...it's a must have for any dog training and obedience problems from puppy to adulthood. Ace is now 7 and our house is a much happier and much QUIETER home due to the wealth of training information we got from this book.
