GREAT SITE - thank you for all your research! My dog had terrible neurologic reaction when a flea medicine was given by a well meaning groomer (without my consent). You may wish to share information about diatomaceous earth for non-toxic flea control. http://www.amazon.com/Natural-Control-Diatomaceous-Earth-ebook/dp/B00852Q0QI/ This book contains lots of information on the life cycle of the flea and how to use that knowledge to prevent infestations.

Thank you! I offer a flea medicine with Diatomaceous Earth as the ingredient on a page that is highlighted above with the huge picture of a flea ;)

Our very old dog had to take some medication for his arthritis and we knew the side effects were not good. However, it took away his pain and made him happy so we just decided to go for it. He was a 13 year old lab at the time and we finally had to put him down at 15. Not sure if it ever did the harm told about but it helped him so very much.

Please be carefull using SYMMETREL, my vet got use to try it but my dog ended up hallucinating, shaking, dribbing from his mouth, nightmare, unable to sleep or rest what so ever, he basically was looking around the house no stop in every corner, under chairs even in the bathroom, as if he was looking for something or someone, he didn't want to be touched or cuddled, basically he was off his head totally. When i contacted the vet at 12midnight we were told it was a atmosphere problem it wasn't until the 2nd night lack of sleep and rang him again to say it had to be more, but he insited it was his behaviour, we stopped the medication immediatly, it took at least 3 days, to get all of it out of his system and he is my dog again.

I'm not at all surprised to read about the negative side effects of doggy medications. Human medications are toxic in so many was with the side effects so why would it be any different for our furry friends?

This is a really informative and useful lens. Great Job. Squidliked.

WOW! Everyone who has a pet should print a copy of this and take it to their Vet when they visit. Due to the fact that I refuse medication and refuse to feed commercial pet food, I'm constantly battling it out with the Vets! Right now, my Cocker is being treated Homeopathically for a non-malignant breast tumor. I'm here to testify that alternative methods DO work and work very well. Conventional Vets discarded her a 8 years old as "not being a worthwhile candidate for surgery because she has too many issues." The issues being, she's blind in one eye and has dirty teeth. Gr-r-r-r-r! This isn't my first experience with alternative medicine, it's just our biggest challenge to date.I could write a book about unacceptable experiences with Vet's! Excellent lens! Thanks!

I'm so not surprised to read that dog medications can have harmful side effects. It's the same with human medications. Then there's of course another drug to treat the side effect and on and on so the drugs companies make a ton of money and your spend your wealth to save your health, often not even accomplishing that. Pretty sad state of affairs.

Anyway on a positive note I loved all the doggie accessories you presented here. Great selection.

Will also bookmark this for future reference. gave you a squidlike.

A bit frightening when you think that you're helping your dog, when in fact sometimes you can be doing it more harm. Thanks for this very comprehensive guide, I've bookmarked it for future reference.

Very informative lens, obviously written by a very concerned animal lover. I have a dog who is currently fighting cancer and some of my friends told me to not put her through chemo because of terrible side effects and I checked the link you provided for cancer, and saw the natural immune system booster. I am really thinking about going the natural route after her surgery. Thanks alot!

Great information! Even those of us who scrupulously research the side effects of medicine WE take may not think to do the same for medications we give our animal friends. I've forwarded this to a dear friend with a darling new puppy. Thank you!

This is brilliant, and I am so grateful for all you have written. I am going to definitely keep this and your herbal medication information stored on my computer. I refuse to give my dog anything unnatural and she is a very fit and healthy German shepherd that eats a fully home made diet. Once again, thank you for this it is excellent.

What a comprehensive overview of what to look for in our doggies (esp. when they need to take prescription medication) - this will help put many dog owners mind at ease. Certain breeds certainly do have genetic predispositions to some conditions.

With your permission, I'd like to add it to my lens 'Living Articles on Squidoo.' Please let me know on my Bio page (no rush, whenever) if okay with you.

    Most respectfully,
    Rose

Yes it did answer my dog medicine question! Thank you so much, my big, huge lab/dane mix was recently prescribed Rimadyl for his arthritis. We have been doing the glucosamine and Dasuquin for a while now but it just wasn't enough anymore. Thank you!

I've spent close to three hours over the last two days studying your pet health lenses. They are so informative that I am trying to absorb as much info as I can. The reason I am interested is that our one dog has an allergy to flea saliva. As result, he contracted some awful bacterial infection on the skin. This was about a month ago. The doctor gave him a shot, prescribed anti-biotics, and gave us a medicinal wash to bathe him. The infection appeared to go away, but now it is back in full force. I just don't know what to do. Imean, we can take him back to the vet, but when it is going to clear up completely. Plus, he now seems to immune to the bath, so I am not sure it is working anymore.

Thanks for all of the research you've put together for this lens. Very informative. Rimadyl is something that the vet has prescribed to my senior dogs (the two most recent are not labs), and they always monitored their liver values. Now I know why. That you have info that is breed specific in there is a great value as well. Thanks!

Very helpful lens on an important topic. I have two soft-coated wheaten terriers and the older one just turned 13. He's showing signs of age and having trouble with his back legs. He was prescribed Rimadyl 3 months ago. He's sensitive to medications and I don't like what I'm reading here aboutthe potential for liver and kidney disease. I plan to visit your Dog Arthritis Page later this afternoon. Hopefully there are better alternatives.

My Aspen the Yorkie is not well today and seems to be in pain, I did a search on Google for "aspirin for dogs contraindications" and your page came right up:-) I've given her a low dose for a dog and am watching her closely hoping she gets to the morning. Thanks for all the helpful information here. It's a wonderful page.

  • ANTI-DEXAMETHAZONE Sep 6, 2011 @ 11:34 pm | delete
My 13 1/2 yr samoyed/husky/wolf recently had a small mass rupture on/near/thru her lung, which made breathing very difficult due to airspace in the chest cavity and loss of negative pressure necessary for proper lung expansion and contraciton. After an emergency procedure to remove that excess air, she stabilized fairly well. Days later I agreed to a single shot of Dexamethazone...For the last 7 hours she has been having prolonged anxiety, her back legs have collapsed, and she is panting out of control, loosing lots of fluid in the form of saliva. For a dog who just had respiratory issues, these side effects are far worse than whatever internal situation might be present. I strong advise seeking another route before agreeing to a vet administering Dexamethazone....Another reminder that natural medicine is always superior to pharmaceuticals and their crazy unpredictable side effects.

Fantastic lens. What a great reference. You may also be interested in another dimension as to how to judge whether or not a particular medicine resonates with your dog. There is an easy way of "talking" with your pet to get accurate responses. I have just posted a "how to" on Nikki's Lens.

very helpful thanks alot. I had a dog who had a wound infected and she kept being sick from the anti biotics.
  • nuestraherencia Aug 25, 2011 @ 8:59 pm | delete
This is such an important topic for all dog lovers. There is no doubt in my mind that the medicine that was prescribed to my dog is what killed her. I can still see her collapsing and not knowing what was going on as I had just taken her to the vet just 2 weeks prior, checked her again a week before and was told to continue the medication. Please, please, before you give your dogs any medication, research them on the internet. If not, find alternative medicine vets...there are some out there. Our best friends depend on us.

Unfortunately, it wasn't until a few weeks later that I ran into an article which described the symptoms my dog was having to the medication she was given.

This lens is just PACKED full of excellent information and resources. I've always been very reluctant to give my beloved pooch medications (and thankfully haven't had to very often in her 13 years so far), but I'll remember this lens if I ever run into that situation again or a friend does. I much prefer natural remedies if at all possible, like the little bit of apple cider vinegar I put in Sassy's water, which got rid of a urinary tract infection (and prevents them). Anyway, excellent lens well worth a blessing by this angel on the "Back to School Bus Trip."

Every drugs (even 'natural' ones) have side effects, be it for animals or humans. You can even have side effects from taking in too much water...
  • flowergardener Apr 8, 2011 @ 5:16 pm | delete
Yes even 'natural' MEDICINES have side effects. I won't call them DRUGS, because DRUGS are synthetically manufactured. The safest course is to become knowledgeable about what you're giving your dog and yourself.

This is a terrific lens with a lot of information that people just aren't aware of. We always think about the side effects of human medication but forget that other animals can also be affected by meds. I'd like to point out that pet health insurance can help cover the costs of medication as well as the costs of taking the vet in for emergency care in case these side effects do occur.

Our elderly lab has lived beyond her life expectancy and the vet put her on prednisone. I thought it was for pain management as she has arthritis and has trouble getting around. I'm sorry to hear of the side effects but I don't know what else to do for her. Poor doggie!

    Oh Lisa, it's ok!
I did delete your message yesterday, but it wasn't from being offended. Like you, I get a lot of criticisms on this page and my others about dog health :) Please do not worry about your brother's written content! That was WHY I deleted your message, as I don't allow any links in this guestbook. I didn't even check out your brother's link, and I have no record of the link now if I wanted to check it out. You are so right, we are all, as you so very well put it for your signature....."All the best for pet health".
  • Lisa Oct 29, 2010 @ 10:33 pm | delete
Hi there, I left a comment on your page yesterday, and I am worried that I may have upset you.

I am a veterinary nurse myself and I know that many veterinary nurses (and human nurses too, for that matter) have a lot of criticism of medicinal treatments.

Some of these criticisms are warranted, and some are really doing great work in pushing science on to greater and deeper findings.

The main thing is, I didn't want you to think I was attacking you personally, at any level.
I think you have got a great page here, and one of the best aspects of natural medicine is the emphasis on the human-animal bond. Your page looks really great too.

I am also concerned that you might take my brother's research rather than referring people to him.
    Please just delete yesterday's message.

When I emailed you yesterday, I was motivated by showing you that not all veterinarians are unthinking machines that deliberately poison their patients.

I hope you understand that my brother, a veterinarian, is motivated by the same thing you are, which is good outcomes for family pets.

Please do not use any of my brother's work without providing complete references. Do not plaigarise his work or claim any of his advice as your own, as that is an illegal infringement on copyright.

I see you have your own copyright warning on your page so I think we are coming from the same perspective. Anyway, for the well-being of my hard-working, poverty stricken and deserving brother, I can clear my conscience now that I have spoken honestly with you.

Please just delete my messages, I hope I haven't upset you.

All the best for pet health,
  • livingfrontiers Oct 27, 2010 @ 3:55 pm | delete
Great message! I am a true believer in simple solutions, and you are really treating the problem not the symptom when you are using natural remedies! It is the only way they work. My dogs and cats have given me lots of great help in discovery of natural treatments, and I am all the better because of it.

Thank you for bringing the awareness of prescription drugs and their effect on animals. Sometimes people overlook this issue even though it is a huge problem amongst prescription drugs for humans.
  • aj2008 Sep 19, 2010 @ 2:34 am | delete
I knew about side effects in human medicines, but never thought there could be problems for dogs but when you think about it, anything has the potential to cause problems for animals as well as humans.

What do you think about have your dogs a dental cleaning with anesthesia at the vet office? Is that procedure safe for your dogs?
  • flowergardener Jun 5, 2010 @ 4:54 am | delete
    Hi Dalia,
One of my dogs had to have a teeth cleaning and check-up last year and the vet used anesthesia. I found out it is a a common practice :/ I didn't like how my dog was still groggy after I could pick him up. I think it's much safer for both the dog and vet. To dig deeper, you must find out what the name of the anesthesia is, and then you'll be able to google it's name to get more information.
  • WebGirlsGuide May 28, 2010 @ 5:31 pm | delete
I'm a vet myself and I think this is a really great lens with well researched information. I'm grateful that you point out that canines can be in pain without their humans being aware, because many dogs don't 'talk' about it. I've always tried to avoid steroids and NSAIDs, however I also advocate quality of life and relieving pain for a suffering animal over having a patient that's suffering for years on end. And sometimes, frankly, steroids and NSAIDs are simply the only things that work.
  • dalia Jun 4, 2010 @ 1:25 pm | delete
I would like to ask you if you consider safe for dogs having a dental cleaning with anesthesia. Pleaes let me know. thank you. Dalia

This is a very informative article. I have three dogs currently but I have had dogs all through my life. One of my dogs was taking Rimadyl and I honestly never thought to look at the side effects. I currently have one poodle that has back problems and he takes dog aspirin for them. I will definately look at the natural remedies and give them a try. The side effects are very scary.

It's too bad this person doesn't have the facts straight. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) isn't used for dog or cats, ever, so including it here is only a scare tactic. Furthermore, acetaminophen is not an NSAID. Ibuprofen (Advil) is an NSAID, but is NEVER prescribed for dogs because it's toxic, so once again, including it here is just a scare tactic and a way to get you to buy some worthless supplement instead. It's true that there are a lot of medications prescribed for animals that have side effects. The same is true of medications prescribed for humans. The difference is that there is no "patient handout" for you when your vet prescribes something. You need to look it up online. It's your responsibility to your animal to get the information your vet fails to provide. Don't take your vet's word for it, and don't take the word of a rip-off website that's trying to sell you something. Do the research yourself.
  • flowergardener Jan 29, 2010 @ 8:53 am | delete
You've failed to read this page slowly and with comprehension. At the top of the page I've stated "Never give your dog the medicines listed below without expert, hands-on advice from your local veterinarian. This article is only for your general knowledge."

I did not state that Acetaminiphen, Tylenol was prescribed by veternarians. I did not state that it was a NSAID either. If you'll notice, it is under the heading of "Other Dog Medicines and Their Side Effects".

I stated "IBUPROFEN, Advil, Motrin, Nuprin, Medipren: are NSAIDs not approved for use in dogs or cats. I also stated "NSAIDs are commonly used for dog arthritis", NOT that they were prescribed.

I'm afraid dear Autumn, that you 'saw red' and jumped to conclusions. This page reflects numerous weeks of research to help others to do, as you stated, "Do the research yourself". It is a shorter and quicker way for dog owners to see alot of different dog medicines in 1 place.

The demeaning terms of 'worthless supplement' and 'rip-off website' clearly shows that you yourself have not done thorough research of herbal natural medicines, and/or your mind is completely closed to anything that does not have a prescription and high price tag attached to it.

You've done a very thorough job of putting this lens together. You obviously put a lot of thought into it. We have a 15 year-old beagle whose been on prednisone now for the better part of 11 years. It was prescribed for severe itching due to allergies as well as for a bleeding disorder. So far we've been lucky that he hasn't developed any other serious medical problems, with the exception of weight gain, but we've always been concerned about his taking prednisone for so long. Now we have a lab whose begun with seasonal allergies as well and, once again, prednisone has been prescribed. I appreciate this information on natural alternatives. It definitely gives us something to think about!

My 6 year old beagle started having seizures a few months ago and while doing research I found out many things about pet medication. My research prompted me to have his thyroid levels checked and we found he was low. We put him on medication and it changed his life, he now has the same energy he had a few year ago.

Now he's chasing squires, chipmunks and digging wholes again which he has not done for awhile. I also found some disturbing stuff on commercial dog foods and like you have dedicated your time to med research I am doing the same for dog food. I already changed my dogs to a homemade dog food diet and am happy with the results.

Pretty informative stuff, your lens is very nice. My dog had parvo as a pup, they treated him and for 2 years he just kid of moped around the house, never hearing him bark in that time span. then one day he snaped (in a goog way) he would bark (when excited, oh he would get excited now) he started playing occasional. He still remained layed back and excepted effection (on his terms of course). He passed away last year at 15. But, to make my long story longer I believe it was one of the medicines or a combo that caused him to be somewhat lathargic for 2 years. sorry if I went on for so long I am some what of a new squid and don't know if your supose to tell stories or just be polite and say wow nice lens. But I guess the whole idea of squidoo is to be yourself, and I love my pets / fury family members. Now if they could just add spell check to these modules.

5***** Drugs are bad for humans so why would they be good for animals. I have saved two of my cats by giving them Genesis. I've also given a dog with a eye cherry and allergies Genesis and his allergies went away and his eye cherry went down significantly. I will have to build a lens on my stories of how Genesis saved my cats. I also use Botanical Gold which is all natural and it gets rid of fleas and ear mites. I lost a cat when I put Advantage on her. She through a blood clot which paralyzed her and I had to put her to sleep. I'm so glad you made this lens to show people how important it is that they find natural alternatives..

Thanks for the great posting. I agree that alternative medicines are not explored enough. When my dog Tanner was diagnosed with anal gland cancer, the vet said with the surgery we would be lucky to have 6 months before a relapse. She recommended a change in diet to completely raw-high fat/high protein and she recommended some homeopathic and chinese herbal medicines. MY TANNER LIVED ANOTHER 2 YEARS! And they were really good ones. I am so grateful for the time we had. I've listed an alternative blood root salve link on my site as well. A site that my vet also referred my to. Thanks again!! Our dogs deserve better!

Oh Kayla, I'm so sorry. I've felt the feelings you're feeling before, and I'm sure many dog owners have also went thru what you're feeling. It comes with the territory honey. By that I mean when you love your pet, really love them, it's going to hurt when they're sick or injured.

Do the best you can, take Petey to a veternarian, and make him as comfortable as possible, show him you are 'there' for him and that he can depend on you for protection and love.

I just tonight got emailed this clip of a radio show at youtube, and maybe it will help you, I don't know, but please understand that I'm putting the link here with compassion and love and understanding of what you're going thru?

This is awesome content! I've always worried about dogs with 'human diseases' getting treated with medicines. I know we don't always have a choice, but now it seems we do. I'm always looking for quality natural remedies to make a dog happier rather than make them feel worse. I always think that we can understand if medicines hype us up or make us feel depressed, but a dog doesn't. It must be horrid for them.

When my dog Duke was diagnosed with cancer he was given prednisone. It made him hyper, super thirsty and miserable for the two weeks I kept him on it, even at reduced doses. Then I decided he was better off without it. He's been much happier- it was supposed to improve his quality of life, yet made it much worse, a big thing when he was only given a few weeks. Happy to say he's made it 6 weeks and is still happy to be alive. You can read my tribute to this wonderful dog at: http://www.squidoo.com/My-Dogs-3

You have done an amazing job on this lens. Many people do not realize the many side effects of dog meds. When our dog was diagnosed with Hip Displasia, the vet wanted to put him on pain meds 24/7. I refused and did some research and found a product that claimed to help that was natural. It was on http://www.dogvitaminsupplement.com. I figured we would try it before any p;ain medication and lucky it works. He has now been able to walk pain free and we do not have to worry about the effects of drugs.

Well, nice lense, got me informed about some things, however I have a problem with my dog (a husky), seasonly she gets red hashes because of the hot weather and everytime the vets prescribes some kind of medication, I dont remember the name right now, but it seems to work, now I have to take her again and I certainly will ask about natural medicines, as she is very sensitive to these things =/
Good info, nice to get to know these stuffs! 5 stars! Cheers! =)

    Hi Jenni,
I'm so sorry to hear about your dog, and the vet's response doesn't suprise me at all. Try the link above to AmazaPet. It will reduce your dog's asthma attacks. I personally don't think you should use any of your inhalers for your dog, but I'm not an expert or Vet! The Native Remedies/Pet Alive links on this page will lead you to a company you can trust. They also have a form so you can email them your questions, as they are much more qualified than I am to answer them. I know what you mean about the prednisone - give yourself and your dog a chance to try a natural medicine - it certainly can't hurt - and you may very well become confidant and relieved that you've done the very best you can for the asthma.
    Gods Love and mine, Deb

My dog had an asthma attack for the first time this morning. I stayed with her and thankfully she was able to get past it. I have several inhalers but did not want to use them until it became absolutely emergent. I know dog medicine and people medicine is different, and I didn't want to risk anything until I had to. I called vets and they said they couldn't tell me which inhaler to use because they would be held LIBLE! So here I am. What can I use if my dog has an asthma attack? I'm afraid to go to a vet and get what they have after all the problems vets have given my pets and I over the years, prednizone (in two elderly dogs with chronic infections) tylenol, sentinel (in a dog with known heart worms and it almost killed her). Please help me! I have an epinepherine bronco-dilater (inhalation epinepherine), your basic albuterol inhaler, MaxAir autohaler (pirbuterol acetate), and qvar (beclomethasone and dipropionate HFA). I also have a Steroid prevent inhaler for 2xdaily advair

I never realized how scary the medical world can be. Even for pets!
After viewing this lens I am definately going to be a little more cautious.
    Great lens by the way...

Thanks for the great lens. My stomach has been giving me problems so my humans and doc took me off Rimadyl and then starved me for a day (hey, can I help it if they don't like the way I decorate their carpets. :-) Didn't know Rimadyl was so bad.. that's ruff. Still not feelin' great, but getting there.

Great Lens. I had no idea and never really thought about the different meds my vet used, but I will now. I have 3 dogs and 3 cats. They are my children. Thanks for the heads-up. 5 stars on this 1, stumbled it, tweeted it, and added it to favorites too :o) Excellent!!

How I wish should have read this earlier. My son's dog died because of a medicine side effect. His pet was just a few months old and the effects must have triggered fast. Anyway, you have put a very useful information here that people will be more aware what medicine to give to their dog. 5 stars! :)

My ferret (she is now in heaven) was on prednisone for three years.
It was the only medicine the vet said would help her Insulinoma. I will never give prednisone to a pet again. It did some horrible things to her. This is a great topic with so much information.
  • ElizabethJeanAllen Sep 25, 2008 @ 8:57 am | delete
Its scarry. I trust my doctor and I trust my Vet. I'm starting to think that trust is misplaced.

    Great Lens!
I do not currently have a pet, but this all makes so much sense! It is very similar to the problems of side effects in the medicines we take for ourselves. What's the sense of taking something to fix one thing but causes so many other problems? We try to make one thing well while weakening other areas that were healthy? We need to make sure that whatever we use, for our pets and ourselves, makes the whole body stronger.

Hi, what a great lens on dog meds. My dog has chronic kidney failure and when he got a whole list of meds from the vet, I had to double check on the entire list.

This is such a great lens - really well done and tons of great info for natural remedies to treat your beloved dogs. As a mum of four furry kids I'm always learning about natural alternatives to drugs and very expensive vets.

You have so many great lenses, I will have to visit each of them, especially to learn more about the PEOPLE alternative treatments they feature... so much great info, so little time!

I just had to give this one a 5star rating - and get around to the others as soon as I can!

Hope you can drop by some of my lenses sometime and say hello!
