How to Stop Barking

Will your puppy not stop barking???

People have a lot of problems getting the dog to stop barking. Remember dogs have no clue barking is good or bad. Your dog may be feeling ignored, encouraged (when some one approaches the house) or yelled at when you get sick of it.

The dog has no clue, he is acting the way he does because you have trained him to bark this way. You have to teach the dog the rules.

One rule to teach your dog first is to use the command "Stop Barking". This should be a simple obedience command vs. a yell at the dog. Each time the dog barks, let him bark two or three times and then say "Stop Barking" While saying this phrase be offering a tasty treat to the dog. Just let her see it.

Many dogs instantly stop the barking because it is dificult for them to sniff and bark. While the dog is quiet, praise him. "Good dog, stop barking, what a good dog you are" Wait 3 seconds after the dog stops barking and give her the treat.

Next time the dog barks, make him wait 5 seconds for the treat. Reward each time the dog stops barking on command. But a little longer before the treat.

If you get even a little bark or woofing after the command is given. Scold gently but firm. Say the command again and a treat after a few seconds. Increase the time between silence and the treat.

This trick alone can get your dog to stay quiet for 1 to 2 minutes in the very first training session. Because she has forgotten what set off her barking and should stay quiet until something else sets her off barking.

Just keep repeating this training and your dog will be quiet longer and listen when you say "stop barking".

This command has to be loud! and get the dogs attention when the dog is excited and barking like crazy. Get dogs attention and reward silence.

Eventually, the treats will not be necessary and the dog will understand what "Stop Barking" means. Then you can just pet the dog.

Keep this training up, it can take time but it does work.

For barking when you are gone, try leaving a radio on in the house.

Take the dog for walks around the area so he knows what is around the yard.

A lot of barking when you are away is simply boredom, make sure the dog has toys to keep him entertained.

SitStayFetch

House training your dog or puppy is the first thing you need to teach any new dog. It isn't difficult but you have to watch them all the time and stop them first.

Keep your eyes on them and close off parts of the house unless you are in the same room and paying attention.

Many people use Crate Training to get the dog under control and to stop accidents. Most dogs will not soil the place where they sleep.

Put them in a crate at night. If the crate is long enough you can put newspaper down in one side so the dog will have a place to go during the night. They will have accidents at first.

Get them on a schedule.
Out first thing in the morning and then at least every hour or two during the day. Someone really needs to be watching them all day long.

Feed after you eat dinner and then outside for a run around the yard.

Tell them "Let's go poop" Then reward them when they go outside, every time.

Take them outside again right before the lights go out for the night and then into the crate.

Start again in the morning. Don't punish them if they have an accident unless you see them in the act. You just have to say "NO" and take them outside to finish. Reward them if they go outside.

Housebreaking a puppy or dog is a really important thing to do if you want your dog to be happy indoors. It will take time to housebreak your dog so don't get discouraged. Take your time.
