Shoot many pictures. The more pictures you take, the more chance you have of taking a great dog image.

Make sure you have enough light. A nice, sunny day is a perfect setting for outdoor dog photos. If you're shooting indoors, take the photos in a well-lighted room and make sure to use the flash.

Some of the best pictures are candid shots of your dog playing.

If your dog is well-trained, it will be easier to take posed shots.

It's a good idea to take the images at the dog's level. This means you probably have to get down on the floor.

Get near your dog. Close up shots usually look better than pictures taken from a distance.

If you're shooting with a background, make sure the background is not distracting. Also, remove the clutter from the background.
