Dog Is Man's Best Friend: A Commemoration Of International Friendship Month

Yes, February is International Friendship Month.

I wanted to give a different but also ancient spin to the topic, because my dogs are so near and dear to my heart.

Because Dog IS man's best friend.

My dogs certainly are mine.

Dogs also bring us closer to people because when I am with my friends who also have dogs, we have a good time watching their joyful antics, thus bringing us closer to each other, and more in tune with the Present Moment.

This lens showcases an article I wrote about Mukunda when he underwent major surgery last year and I was by his side the entire time.

I believe the surgery prolonged his life and made it possible to be with him on this earthly plane for an even longer time.

My Vet also is one of my best friends!!

My Day With Mukunda

I hung out with my old dog Mukunda, today, as I do every day.

I took him to my friend Ellen's house and we exchanged the Mechano treatment, only after we tossed a few rounds of ball and marveled at how well Muki ignored Aslom, the cat.

We complimented him on his good manners.

I took him for several leisurely walks around Ellen's large city yard and we admired the spring crocus, and snow drops between dark green chive.

During our treatments, Mukunda laid dutifully on the floor, looking our way occasionally with a laughing pant.

He ate all of Aslom's cat food.

He had the run of that big old house and the yard, but he only wanted to be with us.

Later, I took him to the Vets.

Muki has a tumor on the left side of his body which has doubled in size since December. Frank, our Vet, had a look of concern on his face as he examined and palpated and probed. He thought that Muki looked awfully fat but in reality, had only gained 4 pounds since the last visit.

Does He Have Ascites???

Was it all the cat food he ate earlier?

Was it all the late night winter snacking?

Frank wondered, Could it be ascites? Ascites is an ominous sign.

The mere mention raised my pulse rate.

Ascites is when the abdomen fills with fluid accompanied by a cancer that has metastized. But Muki didn't have a heart murmur, a good thing. Before Frank would do the surgery, he did a chest xray and some blood work to determine the health--or illness--of my old dog.

Holding him down on the xray table was a challenge, because he kept nipping the technician. Drawing blood was no picnic either. He snarled a few times, but I whispered in his ear how much I love him.

Naturally he calmed down because above all else, Muke loves the word "love."

Muke and I were ushered to the waiting room to wait for results when our Great White Purinese neighbor, Baxtor, came in for an appointment with his mistress to assess his allergies. Muki and Baxtor immediately recognized each other and did a dance around the other.

Muki journeys to see Baxter every morning and evening as a sacred ritual to begin and end the day.

So as I waited for the test results, inwardly knowing I must face any bad news that Frank might have, but also knowing that Mukunda is alert, loves to eat, loves to sprint to the edge of the property several times a day, (while at the same time, bothered by the fast growing tumor), so I did not have an ominous feeling about what news Frank might have about the test results.

As much as I love my Mukunda, and as much as I don't want him to die, I know the time will one day come when he will die. And I will join him the moment I draw my last breath.

Frank came out and said, You have to see this xray!! It is gorgeous!! And, indeed it was: clear lungs, strong heart, succinct borders around the liver and abdomen. Wow!! All those Mechano treatments I give him are paying off!! as well as meals made from scratch, sprinkled with brewers yeast and dried stinging nettle that grows prolifically along the mighty Conestoga River bank that spans the front of our property.

And Muke regularly meditates with the humans in the house.

He knows what "meditate" means.

Then later, the blood work result revealed no elevation of white cells, perfect liver enzymes, platelets excellent, Calcium within normal range, and an above average hemoglobin level.

Frank, I said, There's one more very important consideration. Mukunda and I have never been apart. I take him on every vacation, I've never boarded him, and I work nights so he is always with another human being. He needs to know that I will not desert him during his operation.

May I stay with him while he undergoes surgery? Without hesitation, Frank said, Of course, Kate. He is your baby. And I secretly wondered, How will I detach from my lovely beast? Strict Spiritual practice is in order to prepare for this event.

Old Dogs Will Die

As much as I love my Mukunda, and as much as I don't want him to die, I know the time will one day come when he will die. And I will join him the moment I draw my last breath.

The surgery went well, although it was a four hour event.

Muki's Vet and I had a wonderful time catching up as he laboriously did his job. I sometimes handed him instruments or said a soothing word in Mukunda's ear.

That night, we all had a snuggle time and relaxed, and prayed in silence.

Muke thanked us with his brown Muki eye, and now he is completely recovered, ten momths later.

And so am I!!

How Did Dog Come To Be Man's Best Friend

Some scientists believe that the earliest wild dog originated
in North America fifteen to thirty-five million years ago,
long before any men lived there.

No one really knows which animals were the ancestors of this
first dog in the world. They think that he probably had a wolf
father and a jackal mother. And the descendants of this puppy
were the very first wild animals that primitive man ever tamed.

Now, man might have tried to tame many other small animals. Why
did he choose the primitive dog to be his first animal friend?

Perhaps it happened this way.

Food and shelter were the biggest problems of life for both Man and
Wild Dog in those difficult long-ago days. The only way they could
keep alive was to hunt animals for their food, kill them with their
stone hatchets or teeth, and bring some of the flesh back to their
families to eat, too.

Man and his family lived in a cave. Wild Dog and his family lived
either in a cave or in a hollow tree trunk. When winter came and
food was harder to find, maybe Wild Dog became so hungry that he
grew bold. He crept close to Man's campfire. Maybe he found some
bones there that Man had thrown away because he couldn't chew them.

But Wild Dog could chew them, and did! And one bitter, snowy night,
maybe he brought his family to the campfire, too, so they could get
warm and eat bones.

Then perhaps Man noticed when he was out hunting that Wild Dog caught
his food animals more easily than Man could. He watched Wild Dog run,
nose to ground, right to the hiding place of a fat rabbit. And he saw
that the reason Wild Dog caught his game more easily than Man was because
Wild Dog had a much sharper sense of smell.

Thinking about this, Man may have gotten the idea of catching one
of Wild Dog's puppies and training it to hunt for him.

Man's First Primative Friend

This puppy soon learned that all he had to do in order to be warm and
well-fed was to help Man catch his food.

And when he had puppies of his own, they stayed with Man's children
to help them hunt. When other men saw how Man's dogs tracked down the
food he needed, they began to bring up little wild-dog puppies, too.

Finally, there were almost as many tame dogs as there were human families
in the world. Over these thousands of years, dogs changed in their
appearance as much as Man did. They no longer howled, like wolves.

They barked.

And they came to depend upon Man as much as Man depended upon them.

By the time Man had learned to keep flocks of sheep for his food, he
also discovered a new way in which his dog could help him. He thought
it would be a good idea to teach Dog to guard his flocks from wild
animals while he was busy hunting or fishing.

First he had to teach Dog not to eat the sheep! But once Dog learned this
difficult lesson, he became very skilled at protecting his charges.
From watching sheep, it was an easy step to learn how to watch Man's
family, home, and property. And then Dog learned how to fight for his
master against other men who wanted to steal his flocks.

Little by little, in these ways, Dog became "Man's best friend."

As long ago as 1500 B.C., when Man began to write down his history, he
left records in words and pictures that told about his dog. In Ethiopia,
people thought the dog was so valuable that they actually elected him
their King.

And in Egypt, about a thousand years later, the Egyptians made the dog
one of their gods!

All through Greek and Roman history, and even in the Bible, the dog
s mentioned as man's hunter, shepherd, watchdog, or warrior. There are
pictures of the dog in the tombs of the ancient kings of Egypt, in the
ruins of Pompeii, in the tapestries of medieval France and England, on
the pottery of American Indians.

These pictures show many different kinds of dogs. How did so many different
dogs evolve from man's first primitive pet?
