Dog Leash Training Guide

1. Be patient - Dogs, like people, learn at different rates when training. Some dogs may take weeks and even months of patient training before they completely learn how to correctly walk from a leash.

2. Young dogs usually take well to leash training, though temperament and energy level can influence how quickly they learn.

3. Some breeds, such as Beagles and Dachshunds, often require more intense training because they are very easily distracted. This isn't to suggest that a dog is less intelligent if they don't calmly walk at there owner's side after a week of training, only that they may require a longer learning and training period.

4. Older dogs may take a little longer to get used to a collar and leash, especially if they haven't had dog leash training.

Dog Leash Training

Leash training

A few months ago I discovered that if I pay attention to the pace my dog is walking it makes a huge difference in getting her to walk nicely on a leash. This clip shows how I use two techniques, "Be a tree" and "penalty yards," along with an Easy Walk Harness, to shape what most people call "loose leash" behavior, but which I now realize is actually a pace-of-walking behavior. I've written up a longer description of what I'm doing here on my blog at http://kirstenmortensen.com/index.php/you-cant-always-get-what-you-want/ FYI, I'm the co-author, with Terry Ryan, of Outwitting Dogs. I'm a writer -- she's the professional trainer of the duo. The book has lots more on leash training if you're interested. (And click on "more from this user" to see my other dog training videos -- I'm adding more from time to time! Thanks!)
