Dog Potty Training - A Load of Poo?

Ranked #9,052 in Pets & Animals, #230,041 overall

Is "Pooch" Hampered by Your Poor Dog Housebreaking Skills

Tongue in cheek of course. Potty training puppies or potty training dogs on a whole is really the gateway to total fulfilment between you and your pooch. Why? Because the poor pooch who fails to take his dog potty training seriously, leaving stinky piles and pungent puddles around your home, will certainly flunk his schooling and miss out on all the good things in a dog's life.

I love our 4 legged friends, I own a German Shepherd called Cooper who is now 18 months old ( I remember he had his share of dog potty training problems). Being a dog lover with what I consider to be a substantial knowledge about them gleaned from years of research, study and practical application. I am regularly called upon by family and friends to give out a few dog potty training tips from time to time.. Click here for the most popular dog training guide on the market today!

This is not unusual as many people taking home that furry ball for the first time never really think about the house training puppies issue until they have there new freind at home. It is then when the realisation hits and the "oh my gawd what has he done to my carpet !" scenario hits home.

And as I said I have been so impressed with the book and all the other guides that come with it..

Which Route Will You Take!

Dog Toilet Training - Inside Or Out?

None of us want to see our poor doggie demoralised and sitting in the corner because he/she keeps getting puppy potty training wrong. So it is important from the offset to decide upon a method of training that you want to adopt and stick to it to avoid confusion.

Dog Toilet Training!Dog Housebreaking - Inside or outside is dependent on your home environment - how you want to live with your new companion is the question to ask yourself.

Do you have easy access to a safe garden or space where you can take your pooch to do his business? When you are potty training a dog there are two methods to consider either Indoor or Outdoor dog potty training. Therefore prior to commencing dog toilet training consider seriously which of these two dog housebreaking methods you will choose

A few for's and against for either method are as follows; - -

For Indoor Method- There is no need to; fence in the garden or take dog outside for toilet break. And doggie can potty at anytime.

Against Indoor Method- It can be smelly, messy and you will need to carry dog litter and paper whenever you travel away.

For Outdoor Method - There is no dog mess in the house and you will be able to travel light.

Against Outdoor Method - You must ensure the garden is safe and dog is securely fenced in. Dependant on dog & garden size you may need to walk dog frequently.

Get Ready It's A Coming

How Do I Know When My Dog is ready to Pee or Poop?

Part of house training puppies is about reading the signals, if you constantly observe your dog you can generally tell when he/she is about to have a toilet break. If he starts pacing up and down or sniffing incessantly be warned - something is coming. Of course, each dog is different but there will be a sign to notify you when pooping or peeing is imminent.

It helps to be observant and tuned in to their ritual, being so will no doubt prevent accidents happening where you least would like them to.

Some dogs sometimes can appear to give no warning whatsoever this is especially true of young puppies, who often don't know that they're about to do their business until they actually start to do it.

So keep an eye out and keep mental notes of when his previous potty break was. If it's been more than a few hours, he may need another pit stop soon - especially if he's a puppy. Some other considerations to think about may be;

What has he been up to; If your canine companion has just eaten drunk some water, gotten up from a nap, or has been playing hard, he could probably use a trip on his potty spot.

Is something going to happen? If someone's coming over to visit you, or you're about to go out of the house for a little while, or the activity you and pooch have been involved in is about to change, a bathroom break is always a good idea.

As time passes, you will begin to read the signals and your knowledge of your dog will become more refined - and he'll get to know his own body better!

At this point it will become a lot more obvious when he wants to go than it appears to be now. And he will be able to give you sufficient warning before his I Can't Hold It moment becomes imminent.

Uhh Hmm - Put Your Hands Up If You Got It Right First Time!

Hands up; how many of us mastered our own potty training immediately.... oh no one. Well it is the same with our 4 legged friends; dog toilet training mastery will not be instantaneous, although potty training puppies is at its easiest when they are young puppies.

With dog potty training you can essentially use the same routine for puppies, but you will need to be much more observant and more patient, for a longer time period.

Be careful that you don't unknowingly reward your dog for peeing & pooping in the house.

When a dog is unaware that peeing or pooping where he shouldn't is wrong, the natural feeling of relief to him can become a reward, If not checked his actions could easily become habit making.

Let's assume that you are using the Outdoor Method. You can break this habit by creating a situation where the dog never poops or pees in the house.

Easier said than done, I know, it may be essential to keep your dog in a fenced yard, crate or outside pen when you are away until he has completed dog potty training school.

Picking up pooh and carrying it to the nearest trash can is always going to be unpleasant but its all part of being a dog owner. Always have a few spare plastic bags to hand (ensure you check for holes) and follow the procedure below for fast slick cleanup process follow the steps below: -
