Dog Health Questions
As a dog owner myself it seems that everyday I come up with some quirky health question that I would like to ask someone. However, I never knew where I could ask my dog health question. Doq Question of the Week

My Adult Beagle Chews on Everything!

Question: I have 1 year 2 months old beagle. Has chew toys/bones but seems to chew on everything when not watching. How do I deter chewin? - from Rina

Answer: Has your beagle always had a chewing problem? How long has he been with you?

Have there been any changes in your home, new baby, new job, less attention, or a very cold boring winter? If this is a new development, you may want to look for the reason behind this behavioral issue. If she's always done it, she's old enough to know better.

Chewing happens when a dog is mouthing (teething), bored, wants attention (albeit bad), or just doesn't get it.

At 1yr and 2 months, your beagle is practically an adult and should know the difference between right and wrong. He may know, but is trying to get your attention or steer you away from someone else's attention.

At 1 yr. and 2 mos., your dog can relate to a time out. Just as you would with children, count to 3 when you catch him in the act, and proceed as follows:

1. Clap your hands to get his attention.
2. Say Drop it! or Drop! - some people say Give!
3. Extend your hand out to retrieve it
4. If he drops, say good boy and rub his head, then point to the chew object and say a firm NO! then go back to rubbing. If he doesn't give, you'll have to make him give. Once you have it in your hand say "Time Out!" and put him in the kitchen, laundry room, or outside.

At this age he's old enough to understand that being removed is a consequence of his actions. Be consistent.

Don't give up the first time he does well; you've got to keep it up.
