Dogs Playing Pool by Arthur Sarnoff

Dogs Playing Pool is by American artist and illustrator Arthur Sarnoff (1912-2000). Sarnoff had a art distinguished career. He created illustrations for all the major magazines of the day, including the Saturday Evening Post and Cosmopolitan Magazine. His advertising designs were first rate, and his pin-up calendars for the Kemper-Thomas Company in the 1940s were extremely popular. Along with being a talented and sought out illustrator, Sarnoff was also a very fine painter. However, what Arthur Sarnoff will be most remembered for is the slapstick humor of the series of paintings he began in the 1950s depicting dogs playing pool. Sarnoff's best known paintings are "Jack the Ripper" and "The Hustler." Both paintings are shown below.

Arthur Sarnoff Biography

The Man Behind those Dogs Playing Pool

Arthur Saron Sarnoff (1912-2000) was born in Brooklyn, New York. Prior to working as an illustrator, Sarnoff studied at the Grand Central School of Art in New York City and was a student of John Clymer and Andrew Wyeth. He was a member of the Society of Illustrators and exhibited widely, including at the National Academy of Design.

His portfolio includes extensive commercial work and his art appeared in a variety of advertising campaigns including Karo Syrup, Dextrose, Lucky Strike, Coors, Camay Soap, Sal Hepatica, Listerine, Vick's Vapor Rub, Meds, and Ipana Toothpaste. He illustrated many comics and he created a successful series of pin-up calendars for the Kemper-Thomas Company. According to Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia, Arthur Sarnoff also made an album cover for the American punk band "Butthole Surfers" for their third album, called "Locust Abortion Technician," which portrays two clowns playing with a dog.

Sarnoff provided illustrations for all the major magazines of the time - including the "Saturday Evening Post," "McCalls," "American Weekly," "Collier's," "Woman's Home Companion," "Redbook," "The American Magazine," "Cosmopolitan," "Esquire," and "Good Housekeeping."

He was also a talented and highly respected painter, and he created portraits of a number of famous individuals - including John F. Kennedy, Jacqueline Kennedy, Bob Hope, Arnold Palmer, and others.

His paintings of dogs playing pool were popular and highly sought after throughout the 50s and they continue their popularity today. His best known works are paintings of dogs playing pocket billiards entitled "Jack the Ripper" and "The Hustler."

But.....Is it art?

A bit about my background

I was taught in art school that Andy Warhol's silkscreens of Campbell's Soup cans were art because they changed the way we look at everyday objects and advertising. In a similar fashion, Marcel Duchamp's readymade urinal that he gave a title to and signed "R.Mutt" and put on display in 1917 was considered to be art because, it was explained, it took art off the pedestal and began to merge the dividing line between what was considered "art" and "life."

My teachers were quick to emphatically state that "dogs playing pool and dogs playing poker were definitely not art." I respected their opinions but preferred to make up my own mind. ! hope you will do the same.

Sarnoff's Inspiration

Sarnoff's Inspiration for his billiard dogs series came from Coolidge's poker dog series

Arthur Sarnoff was directly inspired by the artwork of his predecessor, American artist and illustrator Cassius Marcellus Coolidge (1844-1934), the artist responsible for those poker playing, cigar smoking dogs.
