Dogs and Ticks!

Watch out for ticks!
It seems like the ticks are everywhere, especially with the mild Winter we've had this year.
When we were at the agility trial recently, we heard people talking about how they found 1, 2 and 3 ticks on their dogs from walking them around the building where the competition was held.
Living in the mountains, we encounter a wide range of bugs and take extra healthy precautions whenever we venture out.
Below, we've outlined tons of information we found about dogs and ticks that we wanted to share with all of you! So put your paws up and read on. It's important for the health of your dog!

Amber Stones - the latest in tick prevention from Europe!
One of the latest and popular tick prevention products in Europe is the Amber Stone necklace. Is it possible, that a "stone" has the effect to keep ticks off of your dog? Here's what AmberDog.com website says:
- The resinous smell of the amber, which derives from the friction of the amber with the pets fur, and which ticks do not like are responsible for the tick to feel uncomfortable.
Amber has an electrical resistance and is supercharging electrostatically through friction with the fur of the animal.
This static electricity charge is not noticeable for your pet, but is giving the tick, which is jumping on its fur, an electric shock and the tick falls off again in a sudden. This static electricity was discovered by the ancient greeks (greek: electron=amber) This is how amber works in two complementary manners against these little bloodsuckers
But make sure to use only unpolished amber!

Check the ingredients!
Before deciding upon any tick treatment for your pup, we highly recommend doing your research. Here's is a great site from GreenPaws.org with all kinds of information about ingredients in tick medications for your dog. Here's a bit of info from their website:
- "Flea and tick treatments may contain toxic chemicals that can poison pets and harm people. Even when applied as instructed on the box, these chemicals are not safe, either for pets or humans.
To help you make safer choices, NRDC checked the listed ingredients of more than a hundred flea and tick products to report which chemicals they contain and the chemicals' toxicity: whether they are linked to cancer, allergies and asthma or are suspected endocrine disruptors.
Each product is categorized by its potential risk. Products that don't contain the most harmful chemicals are marked with a yellow paw. Pregnant women and young children are particularly at risk and should try to avoid any products from the red or orange categories.
Please note that while this table attempts to provide a reasonably comprehensive and accurate look at the insecticides most commonly found in pet flea control products, it does not claim to be an exhaustive list of products nor should it be used as such. Pet owners should take care to examine the active ingredients in all flea control products they buy."
Be sure and read my exclusive interview with NRDC and GreenPaws.org researchers about the dangers of some flea/tick preventatives and meds.

- Ticks are really nasty and they are hard to get rid off. Try to veer away from chemicals as much as possible so yeah I agree to have a look at the ingredients first before buying anything for your pets.

- Great lens. Ticks are so hard to find on my black scotties. It is hard to fight these buggers without chemicals. Our boys just had their Lyme Vaccine and we use frontline. So the ticks are usually dead, but they still bring them in the house. :(
I guess I will have to read the website about the ingredients in frontline. Thanks
