Knit a Holly Pet Collar

Just in time for Christmas!

This collar can be adjusted for all size dogs!

Holly Pet Collar

Materials:

Scraps of red and green yarn and appropriate sized needles. (I used merino wool cause the scraps were handy, but I would actually recommend indestructible acrylic).

Size:
Measure pets neck and subtract about 2". (If you don't have the pet handy you can find a chart of different breeds neck sizes in most pet stores).

Gauge:
Cast on 20 stitches and work 3 to 4 inches in the stitch of your choice. (I used seed stitch since I like it and it doesn't curl).

Collar:
Multiply the number of inches you need by your gauge and cast on this number of stitches. If you are using seed stitch cast on an uneven number of stitches and K1, P1 across for each row. When piece measures 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 inches, (depends on size of breed) bind off.

Holly:

Leaves - Make 2 With Green cast on 16 sts.

Row 1: p7, inc in next 2 sts, p7 (18 sts)

Row 2: Knit

Row 3: K1, (yo, k2tog) 8 times, K1.

Row 4: Knit

Row 5: Purl

Row 6: K7, (k2 tog) twice, K7 (16 sts).

Bind off all stitches.

Fold leaf in half and whip stitch the cast on and bound off edges together, then fold in half lengthwise and whip stitch up the center. The picot edge (from Row 3) will be on the outside forming the pointed edges of the holly leaf.

Berries - Make 3 With Red cast on 12 sts. tightly.

Row 1: Purl

Row 2: Knit

Bind off stitches tightly.

With right side of stockinette stitch on the outside roll up this little strip as tightly as you can and fasten the loose edge in place. With tapestry needle and the attached tail weave in and out of the edge stitches at the top of the berry, pull this thread tightly, run the thread through the middle of the berry (don't pull this tightly) and repeat on the bottom of the berry.

Attach the two leaves in the center of the collar so that they form a wide V, then attach the berries in the center of the V.

I purchased a buckle of red plastic (the type that is pronged and one end fits into the other. they are often used on backpacks) but if you aren't afraid the pets hair will get caught you could use velcro. If you use velcro do not subtract the 2" at the beginning of pattern. When I sent these as a gift I inserted the ends of the collar into the buckle but did not sew them, this way the recipient (not the pet ) could sew them to fit.

Tips:
1. When seaming the leaves be sure and actually use a whip stitch, I tried other methods and none seemed to work out well.

2. When making leaves, leave a good size tail at the beginning. It took more yarn to sew up the leaves than expected,. 3. When making up berries be sure and leave a 4-5 inch tail at both the beginning and end of the knitting.

My favorite Dog Food Recipes

Some great healthy recipes for dogs

Peanut Butter Puppy Poppers
2 cups whole-wheat flour
1 tbsp. baking powder
1 cup peanut butter (chunky or smooth)
1 cup milk

Preheat oven to 375'F. In a bowl, combine flour and baking powder. In another bowl, mix peanut butter and milk, then add to dry ingredients and mix well. Place dough on a lightly floured surface and knead. Roll dough to 1/4 inch thickness and use a cookie cutter to cut out shapes. Bake for 20 minutes on a greased baking sheet until lightly brown. Cool on a rack, then store in an airtight container. --- This is the original recipe, but I have found the cookies burn easily.

Oh their were times during the teenage years when the thought of leaving my kids outside was very appealing ;) Yes, I agree, dogs need walks and playtime outside, but there are some that never let their dog in the house. They believe outside is their place. That is what I'm disputing.

No, you would not leave your kids outside, but neither would you keep them at home all the time :0)

I think the only answer is 'indoor and outdoor'. Dogs need and love exercise and a good walk, or run, is the best exercise they can get. (controlled of course.)

    Fabulous lens, 5 stars.

I vote indoors, because my dogs are like my kids and I would never leave my kids outside.

What to do if Your Pet is Hit By a Car

As a pet owner, one of my worst fears is having my dog or cat hit by a car. In the Vet world, they call this HBC.

SIGNS

You may see it, and then its obvious. Often though cats and dogs are HBC's and the only external signs are a few scrapes. They may be limping, or have difficulty breathing.

SOLUTIONS:

CALL YOUR VET ASAP. AND ASSESS BREATHING
Vets often see lung injuries from car accidents. Does your pet appear to be breathing normally, or is she labored, breathing with her mouth open. A common injury is pneumothorax, in which a part of the lung collapses, causing progressive respiratory distress. (Mouth breathing, large, deep chest or stomach movements in an attempt to get air into the lungs). In this case you need IMMEDIATE veterinary care.

CHECK HEARTBEAT.
The easiest way is to place your ear against the chest behind the left elbow. You can also feel for a pulse by placing your fingers in the groin (inside the thigh of the back legs).

CPR
If your pet is non-responsive, then go through the CPR steps.

1. Assess responsiveness 2. Establish a patent airway 3. Perform rescue breathing 4. Cardiac massage - establishing circulation

You will have to exert a lot of force with large dogs, but don't worry about breaking ribs for they will heal.

After every minute, stop and check for a pulse or breathing.

Continue heart massage compressions and the rescue breathing until you hear a heart beat and feel regular breathing. ONCE your pet is breathing and his heart is beating, CALL your veterinarian immediately!

GUM COLOR.
This is a great measure of blood pressure, to determine if shock is present, and to evaluate for internal bleeding. The gums should be a healthy pink color. If they are pale, then your pet needs to be treated for shock and transported to a vet ASAP.

STOP BLEEDING.
If there are obvious areas of bleeding, then stop them NOW. Apply direct pressure with a clean cloth or gauze. Hold this in place for at least 5 minutes.

COVER WOUNDS.
Covering open wounds will keep them clean and help prevent infection. Bandage material is preferable, but a towel will work fine until you get to the vet.

SUPPORT A FRACTURE.
If your pet is not using a leg, suspect a fracture. If the leg is dangling, and bent at an unusual angle, then you should attempt to immobilize it until you get veterinary care. Place a towel around the leg. Wrap the inside of the leg with material to partially splint the limb: newspaper, magazine or even bubble wrap. Cover this with tape to keep the newspaper next to the towel.

MOVE WITH CARE.
Carefully transport your pet. A firm surface works best. If possible, put your pet on a wooden board. This is best done by first gently sliding him onto a sheet, then sliding the sheet onto the board. If you don't have any of this available, don't worry, the most important thing is rapid transport to your vet. Lift your pet by cradling him (left arm around his chest and right arm around his rear).

(Great advice came from Dr. Andrew Jones, the author of Dog Food Secrets. I bought this book because I was curious about the dog food hype. I was horrified but found I enjoyed the book because of it's recipes, medical advice and other resources)

CPR For Dogs

Let's Talk Dog Toys

Many companies are claiming to make indestructible dog toys. This is good, because dog toys are a very important dog accessory. Dog toys are becoming very popular online, you can purchase them anywhere in the world right from your computer.

Let's talk chew toys. Chew toys are a great playtime activity for your dog. They enjoy chewing, and we want them to have fun, we just don't want them to chew the wrong things (furniture, shoes). Balls are another great dog toy. Dogs love them and they provide plenty of exercise. Balls are the top selling dog toy on the internet. You can find many variations on the ball. Look around.

Their are many dog toys available online. There is a dog toy that can be unscrewed and can be loaded with treats like peanut butter or cheese bits. The opening is adjustable, if it is wide, the treats are easily accessible and if the opening is closed down, then the playtime can be made longer. The toys can easily be cleaned in a dishwasher.

There is a new toy that has the meat on bone texture. Dogs love em! The longer they chew it, the longer they want it. It is the ultimate chewing experience. Quite indestructible too. My dog has had his for three weeks now (quite a feat, it is the only toy he has not totally anihillated) and it is still his favorite toy.

Want to improve your dogs physical and mental fitness? Get him great dog toys. While he is alone, he will spend endless hours playing with it. Just be sure you select dog toys that are safe for him. His size and activity level plays a big factor in selecting dog toys. You don't want a little dog to have a little ball that can easily be chewed in half. It would be like a baby playing with a popped balloon.

What is my favorite of the dog toys? The ones made of hard rubber. Their very durable and take a beating. My dog loves em, their good for his teeth, and safe. Squeaky dog toys? Yuck! They can become annoying very quickly! (The Dogzilla toys are my fave! They take a licking and keep on ticking) At the very bottom of my page are some examples of great dog toys. I am not profiting off of advertising them, they are just an idea. Wal-Mart also has some great dog toys for a very low price. But make sure they are the hard rubber ones.
P.S. I bought Buzz a really cute duck that had a rope attached to it for tug of war fun. Within two days I woke up to a duck head in my hallway, stuffing all over my living room, and the rope was totally shredded.

We at Squidoo passionately believe in creating new ways to support good causes online. By making a donation to ASPCA from this page, you are sending money directly to that organization, in whatever amount you want. We don't touch it. We don't even see it. Wiki says:

The dog (Canis lupus familiaris, ) is a domesticated form of the Wolf, a member of the Canidae family of the order Carnivora. The term is used for both feral and pet varieties. The domestic dog has been one of the most widely kept working and companion animals in human history. Amongst canine enthusiasts, the word "dog" may also mean the male of a canine species, as opposed to the word "bitch" for the female of the species.

The dog quickly became ubiquitous across culture across the world, and was extremely valuable to early human settlements. For instance, it is believed that the successful emigration across the Bering Strait might not have been possible without sled dogs. Dogs perform many roles for people, such as hunting, herding, protection, assisting police and military, companionship, and, more recently, aiding handicapped individuals. This versatility, more than almost any other known animal, has given them the nickname "Man's best friend" in the western world. Currently, there are estimated to be 400 million dogs in the world.

Over the 15,000 year span that the dog had been domesticated, it diverged into only a handful of landraces, groups of similar animals whose morphology and behavior have been shaped by environmental factors and functional roles. As the modern understanding of genetics developed, humans began to intentionally breed dogs for a wide range of specific traits. Through this process, the dog has developed into hundreds of varied breeds, and shows more behavioral and morphological variation than any other land mammal. For example, height measured to the withers ranges from a few inches in the Chihuahua to a few feet in the Irish Wolfhound; color varies from white through grays (usually called "blue'") to black, and browns from light (tan) to dark ("red" or "chocolate") in a wide variation of patterns; coats can be short or long, coarse-haired to wool-like, straight, curly, or smooth. The Complete dog book: the photograph, history, and official standard of every breed admitted to AKC registration, and the selection, training, breeding, care, and feeding of pure-bred dogs. New York: Howell Book House, 1992. ISBN 0876054645 It is common for most breeds to shed this coat, but non-shedding breeds are also popular.
