Mr Woof-Woof's: Tip On: Dogs, Is One Bath a Week Too Many?

Ranked #22,992 in Pets & Animals, #762,760 overall | Donates to ASPCA

When bathing turns into bathing too much.

That is somewhat of a loaded question, because, like humans, every dog has a unique chemistry. So, the answer is broken up into two trains of thought: 1) when the pup develops a not so fresh doggy smell - which can vary from time to time; and 2) the basic routine schedule of a bath time.
The "doggy smell" scenario can vary based on a number of factors such as; time of year, temperature, weather the pooch is a house dog or outside dog; the outside environment, how often the dog is brushed or combed, etc%u2026 With these circumstances the bathing amount is subjective to the owners. When the owner notices a smell, the pup gets a bath. This can be a good idea, because the dog usually will have a good amount of oil built up to keep their skin soft and not "flaky". However, the downside is that the dog could have an overextended period of non-bathing, which could result in matting of the hair. At this point the animal needs to be clipped or a have good de-matting solution applied.
The second practice of a scheduled bath time should not exceed more that once per week. The marvelous coats of today's show dogs are shampooed generally bathed about every week. This endorses the idea that shampooing once per week is sufficient. Most quality grooming pet shampoos and crème rinses have adapted ph levels to ensure that frequent bathing will not dry the animal's skin excessively. So, if you are going to proceed with the scheduled bathing, always use a dog shampoo or some owners prefer a medicated dog shampoo if their pet has dry or itchy skin. The point here is to use a pet groomer product product type of shampoo, because applying human shampoos on pets can cause skin problems Also, consult your vet or professional groomer, they can make specific recommendations depending on the length of coat and breed. One last note, make bath time a bonding time for you and your four legged-friend. It's always a good idea to associate that bathing time with something good such as a treat. This positive reinforcement will make bath time a fun time and you won't have to battle your way when bathing them.

Pet Supplies

Choosing kennels, crates, or cages for pets can be a tricky situation. Some questions that start to float up are: What size should I choose? What kind of floors should it have? How much air flow or ventilation is right? Should it have a water and food dish in it? With that in mind, when you chose your living space, did you look at the bedroom? Of course you did and that is the most advantageous approach for selecting quarters for your pet.

Crates/kennels/cages that may have features that are eye-catching to you may not be in the best interest of your unique pet. Do some research before you decide on a specific unit. There is a plethora of information on housing options for your pet on the internet. For instance, do a search on dog kennel floors and you'll be amazed at the options that are associated with that topic. And of course I'm biased toward BioLux International's dog kennel flooring. Next, don't be swayed by sales people and if possible ignore the price. This will be a long term commitment and the difference $50 make over 5 years is negligible and in the long run may cost you more in money, time, as well as your pet's health and well being. For example, some crates may come with plastic flat floors that can house bacteria and some cages have wire flooring. This may be abrasive or even cut you pet's paws. The paws may or may not become infected; which in turn may entail a vet visit and imagine the discomfort of the one that depends on you for their health. Enough of that; we all love our pet's and understand that our four legged friend safety and comfort is the top priority.

Animal housing has advanced in leaps and bounds. I recently came across a new invention that was a smoke detector innovation for a dog crate. The smoke detector housed with a magnet, would open the crate door. This in turn would allow the dog to wake up their owner.

Your pets give you so much love and companionship. So, remember, your pets depend on you and they can't speak, human. Well, at least not yet. So, do the research, ask questions, and be satisfied with the fact that your pet is happy with their view to a cage.
