Stuff I know about dogs
The dogs in the picture are two of our pharaoh hounds Holkschter La De Da and Boogie. La De is reading the book with me, Boogie is whispering in my ear about what he wants to chase next.
Are they cute or what? And you know what we're reading? It's a book I wrote all about gardening, but it's from a dog's point of view. Dig It! Gardening tips for Dogs. A friend of mine did the illustrations and it has been loved by almost everybody who's ever snuck a look at it. Except for that guy at the pet shop who didn't think it was funny - wow is he a humorless coot - He probably wouldn't even smile if a nun farted!
A dog curled upon the sofa with you is the best thing. A dog playing in the garden is the best.

how dogs garden
Dogs are not little people, no matter what you might think!
- Bonsai trees taste better than ordinary trees. Helga, our first schnauzer taught me that one.
- If you can't eat it or have sex with it, why bother me with it (dog's)
- Lawns aren't fun if they're not green - but digging the dirt up is fun (Holkschter La De Da, who loves to dig) You should see our back lawn!
- Gardens are for the birds, and the birds are for eating! (Ananka)
- Gardening is much more fun if there's not a drought happening, like the past couple of weeks where I live! (mine)
Ananka's pantoum
Poems are my life
waiting for the perfect time.
She'll wait there silently until
that perfect moment, so sublime.
Waiting for the perfect time
to launch herself into the air -
that perfect moment so sublime;
delicious tension, studied stare.
To launch herself into the air -
with birds about she's never bored;
delicious tension, studied stare
then the leap that brings reward.
With birds about she's never bored,
study, watch, listen, learn,
then the leap that brings reward.
Nothing's free, you have to earn.
Study, watch, listen, learn,
apply the knowledge in her head.
Nothing's free, you have to earn
that little birdie now so dead.
And so it goes on every day -
she'll wait there silently until
every bird has gone away;
crouched down low, tense and still

A dog sonnet
The old dog lies down, close to the heater's fire
as she can get, remembering summer's heat
and the feel of molten bitumen on her feet.
Warmth is what old dogs most require,
warmth and with it food, and a loving hand
to stroke the head and rub behind the ears
the least one can do after all the years
of love the dog will offer before demand.
Dog stays true to you right to the end
no matter what others may try to do
dog helps you through all of your life's messes.
Others may leave but dog is your friend
true to the hero, all important you,
unvaried, no matter your failures or successes.
This is a cutesy one, nobody gets hurt, but the puppy is a bit rowdy!
Hush pup
Shush pup
Stop woofing at the truck
Hush pup
Shush pup
Don't you eat that muck
Hush pup
Shush pup
Don't get stuck in the mud
Hush pup
Shush pup
Trying to earn a buck?
Hush pup
Shush pup
You shouldn't eat that bug
Hush pup
Shush pup
Watch out for my mug
Hush pup
Shush pup
Stop barking at the duck
Hush pup
Shush pup
Puppy just shut up!
Hush pup
Shush pup
Not having any luck?
Hush pup
Shush pup
Come and get a hug
Haiku, I got a million of them - keep watching this space
Thinking Haiku? think Zen! Didn't get it? Well at least it didn't take long too read it!
the willie wagtail
wags its tail
pup asleep
the radio news
is all bad
crisp morning-
the pup's collar is now
half a hole too tight
still June afternoon
T.V. and dog
are too loud
puppy finds her place
the old dog looks
for a better spot
overturned bowl
tiny paw prints
track the puppy
