Rewards Based Dog Training Techniques

One of the best types of dog training techniques is a rewards based technique that rewards the dog for good behavior. This is opposed to the way some people may have been taught which is to punish the dog when he does something bad. Punishing your pet is hardly ever effective but rewarding them is almost always effective.

Rewards based training is used in police and military work and this training teaches dogs to perform all kinds of actions and is even used to train dogs for films and advertisements. And, of course, it works just as well on your pet for basic obedience.

It's pretty clear from the name that this type of training is based on giving some kind of a reward as a response for obedient behavior. However, the reward doesn't have to be a treat, it can be a pat on the head and some jubilant praise - anything that makes your dog feel like he is being rewarded.

You can teach your dog nearly everything by using rewards based dog training techniques. All you need is consistency in training, and your dog will eventually do the desired task and you will reward him directly after.

Teaching Your Dog To Sit

If you would like to teach your dog to sit, you may try putting a treat on the top of his head and then pushing it back further until the dog chooses to sit. When he does this, say the command "sit." When the sit is accomplished you can praise him and give him the treat. The dog will soon relate the sitting action with the word "sit" and with the yummy reward!

Teaching Your Dog To Stay

Rewards based dog training techniques can even work when teaching your dog to stay.

First off, you want to make sure he has mastered the "sit" command and get him in the sitting position.
Then thrust a hand in the dog's direction palm first and fingers raised giving the voice command 'stay!'. Don't yell but yes a commanding voice and make sure your hand movements are precise.

Now, Take one step back.

The dog will tend to follow, so repeat the hand gestures for sit and stay. If the dog fails to comply, take a treat or toy and move it over the dog's head and slightly back of the eyes. Still visible, but in a direction that forces the chin up. Some dogs will rotate around. Repeat until you get the correct behavior then praise lavishly.

Keep trying moving further and further away as he gets better and better at the command
