He may be fidgeting or he may leap at even the smallest sound. On the other hand he may be completely still and sit there staring at the stranger and visitor the he perceives as the danger.

The reason why this happen:

Well, this is very easy; your dog is not used to strangers. Remember your dog relies completely on you to get to know the world around him. If you do not take your dog out regularly and train him to understand that the unknown does not always equal danger, he is not going to realize this. Remember, he has to have contact with the unknown many times before he will learn this lesson, only when he sees from own experience that the "unknown" does not necessarily mean "danger" will he learn to relax around strangers.

Well, I think I have answered the question already, take him out and take him out often. Socialization of your dog is not a strict regimen but, a slow process of taking him out and getting him used to strangers. Ideally this should start when he is only a puppy and still very susceptible, but if that did hot happen, you can start now slowly introducing him to the outside world and as he improves the outings can get more ambitious until he is completely socialized.

It is possible that a dog shows aggression towards family members for two reasons:

1. Your dog is trying to defend something he thinks of as his from a perceived threat (you).

2. Your dog feels unhappy or uncomfortable with the treatment he receives from you or another family member.

The first example can be called resource guarding. What's resource guarding?

This term is used when your dog is over possessive in his behavior towards you. He may for instance snarl at you if you approach him when he is eating. He may also snap at you when you want to take a toy away. You must realize that a degree of resource guarding is normal and that you only have a problem when it can be called overly possessive.

It is normal for all dogs to be possessive from time to time. Sometimes it can be over things that do not seem to have any value like rags or garbage.
Normally, though, resource guarding becomes an issue over stuff that has value such as food and toys.

Now we need to know why it happens.

This is mostly a dominance issue. In the wild such a dog would have been a pack leader. You have to recognize this as a personality trait of your dog. He can actually be called a "bully." He has ranked every family member and he has placed himself in his "rank." If he has ranked himself higher as the other family members he will start acting out his perceived dominance by acting aggressive. ? Because dominance and aggression are the exclusive rights of a superior-ranked animal in the pack. If your dog did not see himself as a high ranking member of the "pack" he would not have behaved so aggressively.

Training for this kind of dog has to start when he is still a puppy and training should be consistent and firm. It is your dog and he should realize that you lay down the law. Do frequent obedience work to underline your authority over him. You have to stay calm and in control though. If you loose your calm you will not have any success. A fifteen-minute session a day should do the trick.

Make the fact clear to him by rewarding him for obeying a command with treats and very lavish praise and by isolating him when he disobeys a command. This is similar to "time-out" that most of us use to punish our kids. Place him on his own in a room or on a pleasant day you can put him outside. (The reason why I say "a pleasant day" is even though it is "punishment it must not be cruel. Remember the punishment lies in him being isolated.)

OK, so this is what you need to do:

a. Brush up on your understanding of canine psychology and communication

b. Train regularly: keep obedience sessions short and productive

Now on to the second possible reason, why doesn't my dog like to be handled?

All dogs cannot stand the same amount of handling. A dog that is not used to lots of physical handling from a young age may become agitated if you persist in trying to hug him, for instance. Having arms slung over their shoulders is the ultimate "I am the boss" gesture to dogs and that is why most dogs do not tolerate it.

A bad grooming experience may be another reason why your dog does not like to be handled. Most often nail-clipping and bathing are the culprits.

When you are clipping your dog's nails be very careful not to cut the blood vessel that runs inside the nail as this is very painful. This will definitely make him fear and hate those clippers.

Being washed is something that a great many dogs have difficulty dealing with - a lot of owners, when confronted with a wild-eyed, half-washed, upset dog, feel that in order to complete the wash they have to forcibly restrain him. This only adds to the dog's sense of panic, and reinforces his impression of a wash as something to be avoided at all costs - if necessary, to defend himself from it with a display of teeth and hackles.

Now you may be wondering if it is possible to retrain your dog to love being handled.

To be honest it is actually a lot easier than you would have thought. Start handling your puppy a lot from the beginning. Get him used to being rubbed all over, young dogs enjoy being handled and if you keep it up from the beginning he will continue to enjoy it. It is only when a dog is not used to being touched that he will feel uncomfortable with it.

To get your dog used to having his nails clipped, pick up his paw and touch them with the clipper without actually clipping them. Get him used to the idea very slowly. You also have to practice taking him into the bath slowly. Remember to keep the water at a pleasant temperature, warm water is more pleasant to your dog than ice-cold water! Augment these two processes by praising him and by giving him a small treat. (Positive reinforcement training.)

With an older dog that has already had several unpleasant handling/grooming experiences, retraining him is a little more difficult. To undo the damage that has already been caused by those bad experiences can only be done by taking things very slowly - the most important thing here is to keep your dog calm.

Please, the moment he shows any signs of stress, stop immediately and let hem relax. Make the whole experience fun, make it a game and give him lots of praise, pats and treats. Be patient, remember that keeping your dog relaxed is vital; no good can come of trying to rush the process.

Remember, a dog show aggression for a reason. He is telling you to back off. Do not ignore these signs. If you cannot get him used to grooming, have it done by professionals. Remember to inform them of the problem.
