This year alone, more than 100 million individual animals in North America will be killed by cruel tests, including dogs, rabbits, monkeys, pigs, mice... PETA is fighting to end this travesty, exposing it for what it is.

For the month of October 2008, PETA has a matching funds campaign, the Stop Animal Testing Challenge.

These experiments are not only cruel, but also unreliable, dangerous, and bad science. The U.S. government's own scientific advisory board, the National Academy of Sciences, has concluded that many animal tests are useless and should largely be replaced by superior non-animal test methods.

But even with that recommendation, animal testing continues, and animals whose minds and bodies are being shattered in laboratories desperately need our help. PETA asks us all to join with them in the fight.

9/05/2008 - A week after Hurricane Gustav hit Louisiana, The Humane Society of the United States is still there caring for animals HSUS helped evacuate out of harm's way.

At the same time, HSUS emergency teams and heavy transport equipment are geared up and ready to keep animals safe from the next round of menacing storms brewing in the Atlantic and heading for the Eastern seaboard as early as today, starting with Tropical Storm Hanna. Contributions needed.

Dogs have wonderful noses that have proven their accuracy to save lives by tracking lost, kidnapped, or fleeing persons, sniffing out bombs, and so much more. For several years now, we have heard about yet another use of this incredible skill - in both naturally gifted and well trained canines - the detection of cancer.

So far, I have received accounts of bladder, lung, and colon cancers being first detected in someone by a dog, as well as malignant melanoma. From the last study I saw, dogs who had undergone intensive training in sniffing out the odors and blends of odors emitted by cancers had an 85% success rate. Today I read more.

The non-invasive cancer screening by dogs, and the early, pre-symptomatic detection of the cancers by dogs, makes this line of testing exceptionally attractive to me. After all, the procedures and machines can be very painful. I have a friend who had the support muscles to her breast torn by a machine during routine screening!

It seems that dog training is key - The dogs must be certified utility dogs (highest AKC obedience rating) and know 400 commands by the end of the training, not to mention the handler's qualifications. But funding for this life-saving research and dog training is scarce. So if you know a benefactor who is concerned about cancer, get them involved!

The University of California, Davis released a new report showing how deadly the mix of melamine and cyanuric acid can be. And that deadly duo was in the pet food recalled in March 2007.

Cats who consumed that combination in their food experienced acute kidney failure within 12 hours - While those consuming food with only one of the chemicals experienced no ill effects.

These study findings are published in the November issue of the Journal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation and explain the puzzling pet food deaths.

Melamine, which might have been added to boost nitrogen content, was previously considered to be relatively nontoxic. But then there were the thousands of pet deaths in spring 2007. The cyanuric acid found in recalled pet food was also puzzling. Structurally similar to melamine, its common usage is to slow chlorine breakdown in swimming pools and hot tubs.

As burned areas of the county are reopened to residents, volunteers
and staff continue to visit residences and perform welfare checks on
animals and veterinarians are tending to animals injured from the fire.
The San Diego Humane Society has been amazed to see how well prepared
residents have been in evacuating their animals.

With many residents returning to their homes, several evacuation centers have begun to close down and others that were previously full have resumed accepting evacuees.

With information changing rapidly, several rumors are circulating
the media and the internet:

MYTH: San Diego area animal shelters have started euthanizing animals because of overcrowding due to animals being taken in during the fires.

This is simply untrue. Neither animals taken in due to the fires nor animals in regular shelter care are being euthanized to create "space." Animals separated from their owners during the fire are being held safely at local County of San Diego Department of Animal Services location where they can be reclaimed by their owners. No animals are being "shipped" out of the county unless done so directly by their owners.

MYTH: There are evacuation centers with people and animals that are not receiving supplies, and people and pets are starving.

Evacuation centers county-wide are in contact with the County Department of Animal Services. San Diego Humane Society staff is regularly delivering supplies, including hay for livestock, to sites in need. Any site that is in need of supplies can call (619) 243-3424 to arrange supply delivery or pick-up.
