  • Mandee Lee May 3, 2012 @ 3:58 pm | delete
I have 2 dogs, one is a regular treadmill LOVER! I have to fight for my own time on it! The other is just a year old and is still getting the hang of it but its GREAT! I have a small house and they get to burn off the extra energy they build up, as well as it being better for them than being sedintary. Not to mention I live in Sunny Florida, so often times its just too, too hot for a long walk or its raining! Treadmills have been a godsend for me and my pups!
  • JohannTheDog May 3, 2012 @ 8:45 pm | delete
Good for you Mandee and your pups!

When we walk, she says Trot and then when I walk close to her, I think, she clicks and I get a treat. I’m not sure exactly what she’s doing yet but i hope to figure it out soon. There was my mat on the floor by the camera and I like running to my mat, because I get lots of clicks and treats there! And then on the jumps too, they are fun.

Aww, I used to have a cocker spaniel named Murphy so your lens reminded me of him. I have never even thought of trying to teach any of my dogs to run on a treadmill. Perhaps that's because I've never owned a treadmill. What a great way to let your animal get some good exercise. Gave you a squidlike.

If you or the dog can't get out as much as you should then getting them their exercise inside on a treadmill can be just as good.

I unwittingly acquired a very high energy dog recently and had heard Cesar Millan recommend the treadmill to help drain the extra energy. I got on-line and bought a treadmill but was curious to know what the steps were to getting her on the treadmill and working her up to a reasonable workout. This website had the best step-by-step instructions and I've had good success with the early training so far. I'm very thankful that you've taken the time to help the rest of us out with this information.
  • JohannTheDog Dec 31, 2011 @ 7:02 am | delete
Glad we could help Jen, and thanks for keeping your pups experience a positive one!!!
  • jadehorseshoe Dec 23, 2011 @ 11:56 am | delete
A calm cat is easier to teach than a frisky dog. Almost strangled the dog, when I tied a short leash to the handbars; he was not happy.
  • JohannTheDog Dec 23, 2011 @ 4:51 pm | delete
We don't recommend tying the leash to the handbars on the treadmill, much too unsafe. You'll notice in my video that even though he's on leash, I am holding it the entire time for safety and control.
  • gemjane Dec 22, 2011 @ 1:13 pm | delete
Interesting! Had no idea anyone had thought of this! Very clever! I love the cat workout cartoon!
  • flycatcher Dec 19, 2011 @ 3:22 pm | delete
Clever, clever Johann - that looks like great fun! But I cringe to think what length of treadmill I'd need for my biggest male greyhound... he's going to have to do without, I'm afraid. :)
  • JohannTheDog Dec 19, 2011 @ 4:21 pm | delete
You would definitely need to get a specific doggie treadmill in xl for your greyhound, fur sure! Tread length is very important for a natural stride :)

Loved your lens. Our German Shepherd used to hate the treadmill, now he is addicted to it! He looks so cute running on it and wagging his tail. We had some guests staying with us last year and they had never even considered the idea of a dog running on a treadmill! So they took lots of photos and apparently they showed them to everyone in their local gym!

I think teaching a dog to walk on a tredmill is a great idea. Then he/she can get exercise even when it's raining or you don't feel well enough for a walk. It can really be helpful for dogs who's owner lives in a place that is not sutable for a good walk or run. Great page. Visit mine sometime; www.squidoo.com/anything-to-save-a-buck

Enjoyed leaning how to use - or not use, in at least one case, how to walk on a treadmill.
  • EasyHiker Aug 14, 2011 @ 10:48 am | delete
This is one thing that every owner should be taught - how to make one's pet dog fit. Many don't even get outside with their dogs and letting your dog go overweight is tantamount to ill-treatment. Dogs need to exercise too, much like humans!
  • KellydeBorda Aug 13, 2011 @ 12:15 pm | delete
Love this - since I injured my knee, I can't take my dogs for the walks they need. I get the kids to do it sometimes, but ... well, you know kids, they aren't always dependable. I've just bought a treadmill to help me rehab, and am looking forward to teaching the dogs to use it too. Thanks for all the great tips.

Even if your dog an injury does not mean that it is end of his career in exercising has to end. Treadmills are actually good for stretching muscles once again and making dogs able to do even light footwork. We must not be afraid to try out new technological innovations since they can help us improve your dogs’ health and body conditions as well.

  • JohannTheDog Feb 18, 2011 @ 7:30 am | delete
We are firm believers in crate training; a dog's crate is their safe place!!! But here are a couple of additional ideas: You can use bells on your outside door and teach them to ring the bell when they have to do their business. http://www.keepdoggiesafe.com/dogdoorbell1.html

Or you can work with clicker training (we love clicker training) to help your dog better understand they are doing the 'right' things! Here's a little vid: http://www.ehow.com/video_2321088_use-clicker-house-train-dog.html

Hope those ideas help! Keep us posted, K?

My dog loves to walk on the treadmill--it's a great way to still get him some exercise on days when I'm sick or the weather's just too awful for our usual two walks of the day (he's a Lab, so he has lots of energy).

I got my chiweenie to walk on the treadmill without a lead! He waits for me to get on & just walks next to me for a good 10 minutes!!! At first, I used the leash & attached it to the treadmill handles, but he wasn't having it. Then I just let him get down, I got on it myself & encouraged him to join me...and he did...on his own!!!! He's the best little guy ever :)

Cute...My dogs all walk on the treadmill and they are all pretty good at it. Just have to be careful about the instant stop thing with one of my more 'treadmill challenged' dogs. She went flying off the front one time when it accidentally got instantly stopped. Other then that I love working on the elliptical while they are on the treadmill!

Great lens and great videos! Looks like your dog is a lot like mine! I've been thinking about treadmill-training him.
  • justin Jul 22, 2010 @ 2:52 pm | delete
Attaching your dog to a motorized treadmill via a leash is extremely dangerous, it can easily result in breaking the dog's neck. Advertising this as a training method is beyond unwise, it's inhumane.

Dog's SHOULD NOT RUN ON A MOTORIZED TREADMILL. They should only being placed on carpet mill's, and attached via the proper harness (a dog specific mill will come with the appropriate harness), which will typically involve a body harness that is secured from a point directly above the dog to reduce horizontal strain.

In addition to this, keep in mind the effort we humans go to when running on a treadmill, we stretch before and after, we cool down slowly as to not cramp - all these are necessary when a dog exercises as well, and I highly suggest rubbing their muscles down after exercise to increase blood flow and reduce the chance of cramping.

Ever seen your dog tentatively lifting it's paw up after running around? That's a charlie horse, just like we get them, and they hurt. Don't cause you're dog pain when it can be easily avoided.
  • JohannTheDog Jul 22, 2010 @ 3:58 pm | delete
Thank you for your comments Justin, but I have to respectfully disagree. Through a wide variety of rehab activities, we do know the importance of warming up, and always start slowly on the treadmill, build up speed gradually, and then slow the treadmill down for a time for cool down. Then once off the treadmill walk around the house for further cool down, as we outlined in the recommendations above.

No where do we mention to leash your dog to the treadmill and leave them. That would be extremely dangerous and we would never, ever recommend that. My Mum uses a leash on me FOR safety, while she is holding it and standing beside me the entire time I am on the equipment. She would never want me on a treadmill, harnessed or leashed or even unattended, without her having complete control for my safety with a leash.

This type of treadmill is very suitable for a small to medium sized dog, and you will notice above that we do recommend a dog treadmill for a larger dog because the tread is longer to accommodate them.

LOL @ give me some woofs :-P Very witty indeed hehe!

Your lens really indicates that you are very knowledgeable in canine rehabilitation, overall exercise, and health. There is tons of information here, the vids really help to explain how to get your dog on a treadmill. I agree completely that while there's no substitute for walking your dog outside, the next best thing is to walk them on a treadmill if the weather is bad. This releases a lot built up tensions and stress in your dog. Puts them in a calm submissive state (like Cesar says :-P). Great Lens, Kudos!

BTW very creative the way you wrote the beginning of the lens from the point of view of the dog :-D

Can you teach my dogs to do that move from the "Here it goes again video" where they are dancing on like 4 treadmills? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Hi Mitch - you know that some dogs require much more exercise than some people can capably do with their dogs. Take me for example: I need at least four miles of walking a day, plus running around in the backyard and more. Some days it's just too much for my Mum. We don't think it's a substitute, just a good addition to a regular exercise program for your pup. Thanks!
  • mitchking Sep 21, 2009 @ 11:18 am | delete
I am sure this is great for making sure your dog gets to walk no matter what the weather. But when so many people do not get enough exercise maybe they should stick to walking the dog themselves.

Wow!!!!! I just got chills down my back. Thought I was seeing DeeDee my deceased dog. Got her when she was 8 weeks old and she died of a brain tumor at 14 years old in 2006. Johann the Dog looks just like DeeDee, and her movements and behavior seem to be exact. They both have the little white tips on the back feet, the white spash on the chest, and the tiny white tip on the tail. Although DeeDee had small white socks on the front feet. I have photos of her if you would like to see them, I could e-mail them to you.

Great lens. 5***** and thanks for this.

Wow, I can't believe you can teach them this. How about cats? My Mom's cats are incredibly chunky. Nice work!

Good article. With some patience you can teach your dog to walk on the treadmill.

Johann you are so lucky to own such a lovely, clever Mum to help you work out all this stuff. I know you would probably work a lot of it out on your own, but it's great to make us humans feel clever isn't it?

Hi Johann! I was asked if I really knew a dog that walked on a treamill and I gave them your squidoo lens name! I hope they come visit! This is a great lens! 5*

What a great lens and interesting information. This is great for those who live in a congested city.

My dog loves to run, so I imagine she wouldn't need too much encouragement to get up on a tread mill...

My mom says that putting my dog on the treadmill(shes a border collie) is torturing her; can you correct her please and explain how her being a border collie(one of the most energetic dogs) is fine.

You just have to take it super, super slow. I recommend clicker training to help you. This is what I would do, even though I admit I've only trained my own dogs. Start with you and your pup about four feet from the treadmill, click and treat. Move very gradually closer to the treadmill, clicking and treating over many days. Then move back to the four or more feet and turn the treadmill on, gradually move closer and closer till they are used to the noise. This may take a couple of weeks, working several times a day. Then turn off the treadmill and work with your dog on it without it being on. They have to really love being there before you even begin to turn it on and have your dog go on it.

Then do the steps I described about either picking up your down and gently placing him/her on it, or leash them up and make the treadmill go super slow. Try these and if it doesn't work - I would say that maybe it's not that important. Some dogs just can't handle.

Excellent lens. I've heard that treadmill training is great for dogs, my former canines didn't but into it :) Thanks for sharing.

Just voted 5 stars for this very informative lens! Good work! I had no idea that you could so easily train a dog to use a human treadmill.

Note to other readers: I follow Johann the dog on twitter, and it's great fun to do that. Give it a try!

A beach sure does sound nice, but when it's 9 degrees like it is today where we live, Johann just can't get a good run in, even in our yard. It's too cold. So he loves running on his treadmill! He'll run over to it and bark, just so I'll turn it on for him.
  • singaporehosting Jan 20, 2009 @ 9:57 am | delete
Poor dog! Are you sure he enjoy the treadmill? Dogs love open space, just let them enjoy themselves at the beach seems to be a better idea :)

What an awesome and inspiring lens. I have tried to get both of my dogs to get on the tread mill without success. I will give it another "whirl".

Thanks! About nails: If you keep your pups nails trimmed, and make sure to keep them centered on the treadmill when it's running, I wouldn't have a concern for nails. Take is slow, make it positive, always be cautious, however! And keep a watchful eye.
  • BigGirlBlue Sep 13, 2008 @ 12:41 am | delete
This is a totally fabulous lens. I'm definitely going to try this. Any concerns about nails?

All I can say is wow! This would be great for pet owners who like to multi-task and need to give their pets an opportunity to exercise. As I was reading and watching, I was wondering if I could get my cat to do this...then I saw the cat video at the end. So funny, they seem to like it a lot! Great and unique lens, thanks!
