Canine Vaccination Schedule for Puppy Vaccinations

While a puppy vaccination schedule is accepted by almost everyone as being essential, vaccinations for adult dogs has become an area of some controversy.

Dog vaccinations, as opposed to puppy vaccinations, may not be required as often as we are led to believe

Perhaps your vet is of the "old school" (a huge proportion are), who advocate annual dog vaccinations, and sticking with a dog vaccination schedule that requires you to bring your dog in for his vaccinations each and every year.

So if you have a puppy, the message is do not overlook the puppy vaccines - they are important. Vaccinating puppies to the age of one year is recommended by all competent authorities (both conventional and holistic). But once your pup has reached maturity - think carefully before going ahead with the dog vaccination schedule your vet may be advocating.

Puppy Vaccinations

Your vet must be consulted in relation to when and at what intervals puppy vaccinations are required.

Your puppy vaccination schedule should certainly have been commenced by the breeder you bought your puppy from, or the shelter if you purchased your puppy from a shelter.

But once you get your puppy home, it is essential that you see your vet as soon as possible, both for a general health check for your puppy, to set up your puppy vaccination records, and to implement a puppy vaccination schedule at least up to the age of 12 months.

After that, see the comments above, or find out about vaccination dangers.

Dangers of Vaccinations

The dangers of vaccinations are that over-vaccination, or vaccinations in susceptible animals, can cause vaccinosis. Both feline vaccinosis and vaccinosis in dogs can cause serious problems - even death.

Dog vaccinations are problematic particularly because some vaccinations, most notably the rabies vaccination, are required by law. Others are required if you intend to board your dog, even though there is no immunologic requirement for the practise of annual dog vaccinations.

So yes, there are dangers of vaccination, and you should be aware of this fact.

My Yorkie was killed by vaccines, also. She was only 6. After her vaccination, her back legs went paralyzed and her systems slowly shut down. We had to put her to sleep because of the long, drawn-out suffering. If only I knew then what I know now. The same happened with my first child--she didn't die, but she had seizures after every "immunization". I stopped vaccinating her after one year old, and never have vaccinated the other children. The doctors refused to acknowledge the cause of the seizures, which were obviously caused from the shots, and thus refused to treat it. Most veterinarians I know are just as bad with pets, unfortunately.

Please, before you vaccinate another one of your dogs, please, for your own peace of mind and their health, consider the following:

Our beloved border collie, Spencer, passed away on Saturday from an inoperable brain tumor. We, needless to say, are all heartbroken. This might be one of the mysteries that stay unresolved, except for the fact that 6 weeks ago, we brought a nine year old dog with boundless energy into a veterinarian's office who told us he was in excellent health and then administered the rabies, distemper, and bordetella vaccinations. This was on 1/3/2009; on 2/21/2009 he was dead.

Please don't make the same mistake I made. You have choices and options. Please exercise them. After all, why would you possibly want to be like me: someone who, with the very best of intentions, helped kill his dog?

    Trying to sleep,
