Doggy "pushups"

SIT/STAY, DOWN/STAY makes "DOGGY PUSHUPS"

Here is a challenging activity. If your dog(s) know the "sit" and the "down" then just line them up in front of you and do some really quick "sit", "down, "stand" in succession. The dogs really get a kick out of it! Especially when they are frequently rewarded with a treat.

Another activity is to find a favorite toy, put your dog on a "sit, wait" command. then go hide the toy. Start with easy "hides" and then progressively more difficult. While the dog is waiting and watching, you can just go into the next room and hide the toy and then come back out and say "find it!" THEN what you want to do is  pretend to go into the next room, but instead walk on through into several rooms before actually hiding the toy.  After while that dog learns to thoroughly check out every room!

Taking crazy photos is a great exercise too! Somehow getting out a camera makes even the most placid dog get up from a "stay" command! But, if you're patient and determined, you can get the dogs into some sits and stays with costumes on, sunglasses, clothes, whatever, and get some really good snapshots for future use! Meanwhile the dog is practicing his stay command and also having some good times just being  with you and interacting with you.  Then get those crazy photos out and go to my Dogdaze Designs site and request a custom designed shirt! (or coffee mug or mousepad...) and preserve those great photos forever!

On another note....

Using clicker training for teaching the "wait"

In order for a dog to be a search dog, you need to be able to control it in the field....and the clicker is such a GREAT way to teach this skill. Just start walking your dog, as you are walking, suddenly place your hand directly in front of the dog's nose, say "wait" in a firm voice, and drop the leash and KEEP ON WALKING. The MINUTE that the dog stops, click the clicker. It does work wonders, but requires a bit of "magic" as far as switching hands, holding leashes, and clicking, etc. all at the same time!!

For folks who have good vocal reinforcement, the clicker perhaps is simply an "extra" and not necessary. The KEY to good training in ANY AREA OF DOG TRAINING is correct reinforcement at the RIGHT TIME. Putting it another way: timing is the key.

For some great help if you are training a search dog, there is an excellent selection of books available.I hand picked the best books myself for this selection.
