History of the Dogwood

For years now the one flower that I love to photograph is the Dogwood Blossom. For me it is one of the most amazing flowers with such a unique texture, coloration and beauty. My photography of the Dogwood Blossom has changed a lot throughout the years. But again, so has my camera. The one thing that remains is the beauty I seen in them.

The Dogwood Tree has a very long history; they say at the time of the Jesus' Crucifixion, the dogwood tree was comparable to the size of the mighty oak tree. Because of its firmness and strength it was used as the Cross that Jesus was crucified on. Although there are no direct accounts of this, it is known that dogwood trees did grow in the areas surrounding Jerusalem during this time period.

According to a Catholic site I was reading, the dogwood tree became greatly distressed because of the horrid way it was going to be used. Crucified Jesus sensed this and because of the way the tree felt, Jesus said that the dogwood tree would never again grow large enough to be used as a gibbet. The Dogwood Tree would be slender, bent and twisted and its blossoms will be in the form of a cross. In the center of the outer edge of each petal there will be nail prints, brown with rust and stained with red. The center of the flower will be a crown of thorns and all who see this will remember. Again, please remember there is no historical fact to back this information up.

This is such a beautiful dogwood flower lens I did not know any of the folklore behind this beautiful flower. It is our provincial flower so I am rather partial to it.

My favorite climbing tree in my childhood yard was a dogwood. My brother and I used to collect the buds/berries and pretend they were money, and we'd use them to buy and sell our baseball cards to each other under the tree. I enjoy your pictures; very beautiful!

Simply beautiful! I love dogwood blossoms too. Isn't it interesting how the most beautiful flowers bloom in difficult situations? I just published Photographing Spring today, so am lensrolling this one to it.
