Eisenhower Dollar
Friday, July 6th, 2007

The Eisenhower (Ike) dollar is a coin that I had forgotten about or had thought would be too expensive to collect. A lot of people refer to them as silver dollars when in fact most of them do not contain silver as I understand it. They are the last of the big dollar coins and make the half dollar look small compared to them. I'm looking into buying a group of them at just a little over face value if I can.

John Adams Dollars
Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

I bought my rolls of Adams dollars at the bank a few days back and have found quite a few with uneven edge lettering. The lettering starts in the middle of the coin and trails off and almost falls of the coin towards the end. There are also a lot of them with small chips taken out of the rims. Time to do some research on them.

I'm still getting the 50s out there, used a few at the post office the other day to mail out an Eastern Caribbean States coin set. I've only got a couple more sets left since I'm running low on the 2 cent coin.

Upside down rim lettering is not an error on new presidential coins

May 15th, 2007

I have seen many online coin sellers selling the Washington dollar upside down edge lettering coin as errors. They are not errors and the lettering is random since they get sucked into the edge lettering machine after being struck. The prediction is that 50% will have upside down edge lettering and 50% right side up. The upside down lettering is not an error but the coins without any lettering are errors. It was tough for me to get any of the new dollars since most of the bank tellers had not heard of them or put in any orders.

Collecting the new presidential dollars

May 13th, 2007

Here comes the brand new Presidential Dollars starting with George Washington released to banks on Feb 15, 2007. Not wanting to be left out I tried 3 different banks and none of them had ordered any at all. They said to check back in a few weeks and some of the tellers hadn't even heard of them. I did and I bought a few rolls of them. It's not always easy to acquire coins but I see 3 different ways to get them.

I see 3 different solutions to obtaining these and other hard to find coins.

1. Ask bank tellers for the coin and ask them to order you some to when they place the order for money. It can't hurt to ask.

2. Buy from online auction sites. Many people buy up loads of new coins and will sell them at auction. This may also be the best way of finding rare coins as well.

3. Order direct from the US mint website. The prices are pretty high here but it may be an option for some.

Save money when you buy coins at Ebay.
Sunday, December 9th, 2007

I've joined a rebates website called BigCrumbs which gives you a share of the fees that the seller pays at Ebay. You can save about 1-2% of the final price depending how much the seller has to pay in fees. I know a lot of coin collectors buy and sell at ebay and the savings could really add up.
