Melissa& Doug Victorian Dollhouse Furniture Bundle

Dollhouses come in many styles - from those large enough to cater to the Barbie fanatics (if you're building it for a young girl) to those Victoria cottages that are meant more for display than for play.

There are also Colonial dollhouses, farmhouses, and Tudor style dollhouse options. You can even choose to build a log cabin if you always wanted to design your own rustic abode.

Once you choose the style, you'll need to decide if you want the hard work of building from scratch or the ease of choosing a readymade dollhouse kit.

Either way, you'll need to decorate it to the hilt, choosing paints, wallpaper, and furnishings that your fantasy miniature homeowners would find acceptable.

decorating dolls houses use all of their artistic imagination for the design and decorations that they use. For them this is an inexpensive way to decorate the house which they always wanted. It is no wonder that some people take years to complete their decorating, indeed sometimes they never finish. These hobbyists mostly work with one room at a time, and by the time they reach the last room they have come across a new idea for the first room, so they will scrap the decoration of the first room and start all over again. For some it is a never ending process.

The hobby of decorating dolls houses is very time consuming and challenging. The bigger the dolls house, the bigger the challenge. All decorators have one thing in common, and that is patience. It is no wonder, since they would probably go crazy without it. They have to work out the detailed plan before starting the decoration for the living room, dining room, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and even the attic or spare room. After creating the detailed plan, the hobbyist starts designing the rooms with wall paper, carpet, window curtains etc. They also decorate their dolls house with other innumerable accessories like miniature light bulbs, furniture and so much more.

Melissa & Doug Take-Along Victorian Dollhouse

Some dolls house decorators want to replicate their dolls house exactly like their home, or how they wish their home would look. Some even try to experiment first in their dolls house before applying the same thing in to their house. Today, the hobby of decorating dolls houses is becoming more and more specialized. Most dolls houses have landscape, patios, gardens etc. Some have even built a mini theater in their dolls house.

There is a very big market for miniature decoration materials for dolls houses. There are special companies that deal with only miniature, custom made furniture. Generally the cost of custom made miniature furniture is high, since they pay full attention to the minute details. Most miniature furniture is a working model; that is, you can open the drawer of miniature wardrobe.

The most difficult part of designing and installing

a dolls house is the lighting system. If the hobbyist has no previous knowledge of electricity and wiring than it can very tough to do the wiring and lighting of dolls house without expert help. As long as the hobbyist doesn't have any specific plans for advanced lighting systems, it is possible to buy small kits that are fairly generic in their appearance.

Building a dolls house and filling it with collectibles is a long and time-consuming process, and requires great attention to detail. It is a hobby that will cause quick frustration in some people. But, if you think you have it in you to pursue the hobby, you may find that it is great fun and very enjoyable.

Here's a tip: for a chest of drawers, stack match boxes or tiny gift boxes that slide in and out, or boxes from tiny fuses used in automotive applications (one brand--outside is metal and "drawer" is clear plastic). Then paint if desired, and/or use tiny magazine pictures as "decals". Use beads for drawer pulls.

I've wanted a wood dollhouse since childhood. One that was built, ready for me to decorate with wallpaper, furniture, lights (like my Aunt Mary had) and personal touches. My favorite touch to a dollhouse was one that was made for my niece by her Grandfather; it was a framed picture of her Mother at the same age as she was at the time the dollhouse was gifted to her! If I had had the time, I would have done it for both of my daughters. I also have a great idea for a doll house I once owned, have not seen anything like it since. Am still looking since I too have ideas for doll houses on a lens. Promise, not like yours, a bit different. If you want me to share my idea, please drop a note, I'd love to hear your feed back!

These are lovely. I played more with stuffed animals and plastic horses than dolls as a kid but for any barbie doll girl this would be awesome.

I bought one of the dollhouse kits once. I never finished it and gave it away for someone else to finish. I was moving at the time...and you just can't move an unfinished dollhouse very easily.

I am virtually dreaming right now, as we speak, of my new house -- er doll house -- may it be a charming cottage! Merry Christmas my dear ... still thinking "merry" you know? May you have a blessed rest of the year and a very Happy AND Blessed New Year that is all that you could want it to be!

Like Susana, I gave up the hobby for a while because it was childish, but not a long time, i guess, because I picked it back up again. I like modern design as it's easy to pick up, or create, eclectic furniture and accesory designs... that work.

Glad to see you included the fact that it takes lots of patience for this hobby. I've seen a number of people spend considerable money on kits etc, only to find they don't have the patience necessary. If you have the time, have a look at my site: dollhouse-accessories.com
